The 2023–24 I-League (also known as the Hero I-League for sponsorship reasons) will be the 17th season of the I-League, second as the second tier of Indian football league system.[1]

Rules

Registered foreign players have been reduced to five in the squad and three in starting line-up. The mandatory quota for an Asian player has also been removed.[14][15]

Teams

16 teams will compete in this edition of the I-League: Nine teams from the previous year, two teams promoted from the 2022–23 I-League 2, and at least four corporate bid winner.[16]

As per the change in rules, the AIFF has allowed a maximum of five foreign players to be registered, but only three can be fielded in a match at a time. It is no longer mandatory to sign an Asian player.[32]
