Toro (トロ), full name Toro Inoue (井上トロ, Inoue Toro), also known as the Sony Cat, is a fictional character created by Sony Interactive Entertainment.[1] He is an anthropomorphized cat who behaves mostly like a human in order to become a human.[2]

Toro first appeared in the PlayStation game Doko Demo Issyo. He serves as Sony's mascot in Japan, particularly for the PlayStation Network.

Character

Toro is an anthropomorphized white Japanese bobtail cat of a chibi design style. Toro is characterized by his big, trapezoid-shaped head, a rectangular-shaped body, and its vast variety of face expressions. Toro's family name originated from the sushi chef that adopted him after he got abandoned.[2]

Appearances

Toro first appeared on 22 July 1999 as the main chatterbot in the video game Doko Demo Issyo (Together Anywhere) on the Sony PlayStation, and included support for the PocketStation. The game won the Japan Game Awards' Game of the Year award alongside Final Fantasy VII.[citation needed]

In 2004, Doko Demo Issyo was released on the PlayStation Portable, with a free demo being available in the Japanese PlayStation Store.

Toro appears in the PlayStation 3 title Mainichi Issyo ("Everyday Together"), a talk show-like game where Toro delivers daily news together with Kuro, a black cat who is his close friend. Players answer trivia questions to win in-game money (Myale) and prizes such as decorations for Toro's in-game apartment; an online IQ test versus game is also available. Mainichi Issyo was available as a free download on the Japanese PlayStation. A sequel, Weekly Toro Station, was released in November 2009 as a successor for Mainichi Issyo.

Toro was a playable character in the 2012 platform fighter game PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, alongside other PlayStation characters and mascots such as Nathan Drake, Sackboy, and PaRappa.

Toro was featured in the free downloadable PlayStation Vita game Toro's Friend Network, which served as a platform for players to find new friends through Twitter, Facebook, and PlayStation Network.[3] It was the first game in the Doko Demo Issyo series to be released outside of Asia.

Toro starred in Toro Puzzle, which was released for Android and iOS in Japan in 2019 and later released worldwide on June 23, 2020 as Toro and Friends: Onsen Town.[4] The game ended service on April 12, 2021 in Western regions and on May 10 in Japan.[5]
