and then it's lunchtime!

It's stupid but it bugs me sometimes: I have a half-memory of a Saturday cartoon, thirty-odd years ago, in which a cat (or other predator) chortles over his plans for an unlucky prey-animal, concluding with "And then it's lunchtime!" Does anyone else remember that bit? —Tamfang 07:19, 4 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately there are probably more fictional cats than any other animal(?) If no one else remembers this, try looking through our list of fictional cats#Cats and felines in animation, comics and puppetry.--Shantavira 10:56, 4 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, perhaps the most common cat to fit that description is Sylvester (Looney Tunes), who normally hunted Tweety Bird, but occasionally also hunted other animals, such a kangaroo he mistook for a giant mouse. Those characters were commonly shown in syndication in the time frame you've specified. StuRat 05:50, 5 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes but I don't remember Sylvester ever describing his schemes in advance. —Tamfang 07:26, 6 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I believe, in the episode with the kangaroo, he described his plans to his son. StuRat 17:09, 6 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Foreign bonus tracks

Why do bands often include extra tracks on the export versions of their albums, especially Japanese versions? For example, UK band Muse included the bonus track "Futurism" on the Japanese version of Origin of Symmetry, the Arctic Monkeys included two new songs on Favourite Worst Nightmare while US band The Killers included three extra songs on the Japanese release of Hot Fuss, while Oasis included bonus tracks for US, Canadian and Japanese iTunes users on Don't Believe the Truth. Laïka 16:28, 4 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know, but someone asked the same thing a few days ago (scroll up to April 30). Recury 16:36, 4 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Film soundtracks

Hi- I have noticed that sometimes on TV and movie soundtracks, songs will be ever-so-slightly sped up, so it is transposed just a little bit. A good example of this is in Seeing Double, when many of S Club's songs are played in a slightly higher pitch. Why is this? Is it for copyright clearances, or just for timing reasons?

I wouldn't think it would be for copyright, since making a song higher-pitched wouldn't really make any difference as far as that goes. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think there are tools that can make a song faster/slower (shorter/longer) without changing the pitch, so I wouldn't think it was that either. It could just be a creative thing, maybe they just thought higher-pitched sounded better. I can't say I've noticed anything like this in any movies I've watched, though. Recury 20:50, 4 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Standard movies are filmed at 24 frames per second, and this also applies to TV shows that are shot initially on film. In North America where TV is at 30 frames per second, the duration of the movie frames is varied cyclically to achieve the right speed: if you play a movie tape in slow motion on a VCR, you can see this. But my understanding is that in Europe (including Britain), where TV is at 25 frames per second, movies shown on TV were traditionally just played at a slightly increased speed. Unless they went to the trouble of using the technology the last poster referred to (and of course at one time it just wasn't available), this would produce results like the original poster described. A 4% speed difference would correspond to about 1/3 of a whole tone in musical pitch, raising C about 2/3 of the way toward C#, for example. Whether this uncompensated speeding-up still goes on today, I can't say. See Telecine. --Anonymous, May 4, 2007, 22:40 (UTC).
You're not wrong Recury; there are programs/devices that can alter the length of a sound while keeping its pitch intact. The problem is that the technology isn't very good yet (although it does work better for increasing rather than decreasing speed). I think this process actually takes longer (at least on my computer) than simply speeding it up a bit. Most people won't even be able to notice the difference unless listening to the original and the altered version side-by-side. And, if you're unfamiliar with a tune, it's extremely hard to notice these changes. As an aside, some television shows are sped up in syndication (e.g. The Simpsons) and edited in order to fit in more commercials. It can be quite hard to notice these dropped frames, but you can cut something like a minute off of a 1/2hr show this way. I also remember seeing The Terminator being shown on TV NOTICEABLY sped up and had a good laugh at everybody speedwalking around. - Zepheus <ゼィフィアス> 00:25, 5 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles being 80s

Does the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles count as an 80s fad? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Heegoop (talkcontribs) 03:31, 5 May 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Well, the TMNT comic books started in 1984 and animated series in 1987, so for the date I'd say yes, although the term "fad" seems inappropriate, since most fads would be long gone after 23 years. StuRat 05:41, 5 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's been in an out of popularity though - at least in Australia where we had the 80s-90s animated series and the first few movies, then it all disappeared until the live-action one a few years back and then the new(er) animated series (and the new movie of course). In addition, while I'm not really connected with school culture like I was back in the early 90s (for the obvious reason) I wouldn't consider it to be so much the "greatest thing ever" as it once was. So from that point of view, I'd say yes, fad. Confusing Manifestation 00:29, 7 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

World War I Shareware Game

Hey about 5 years ago I downloaded a shareware game about World War I called Great War, I've been searching the internet for it with no luck. Basically the game was on the map of Europe and each army was represented by national flags. You could move armes "attack and advance" and entrench. One of the scenarios was Russia First. Also when you first started the game there was the british variant of th famous I Want You poster. --Englot 15:53, 5 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Of course, to some of us, the British variant is the famous poster... Was it this? Or this? That second link may be describing the same game as the first, but oddly. Combined with this description, it sounds like you're looking for 1914: The Great War. If not, sorry :-) Skittle 22:16, 9 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Frankie Lymon was black, as were half of his backing group the Teenagers, and they hit #1 in the UK in 1956 with "Why Do Fools Fall in Love". --Metropolitan90 05:18, 6 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure since when "number 1" singles were listed. The Winifred Atwell article says she "was the first black artist in the UK to sell a million records." But check out The Ink Spots and the Mills Brothers too.--Shantavira 07:33, 7 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Low Brow

What exactly is "low brow" culture? Why is it that things such as genre fiction or exploitation films can be included in the same cultural category as Jerry Springer. 71.31.159.52 00:38, 6 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That is rather upsetting. I think I'll rip my shirt off and hit the perpetrators with a folding chair while yelling obscenities which are constantly bleeped. StuRat 07:07, 6 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

William Tell Overture download

I'm looking for a download of Rossini's William Tell Overture, specifically the part famous for use during sunrise scenes. I can't find one that isn't either a ringtone, the "horse chase" part, or not for download. Help? - AMP'd 01:11, 6 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

THIS SITE seems to have an excerpt that isn't the 'lone ranger' theme for download. Don't know if it's the one you want cuz I can't play it. Anchoress 01:24, 6 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Neither can I, and I don't plan on paying $8 for a song that's in the public domain. (Its copyright's expired.) - AMP'd 01:42, 6 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I didn't notice that until later. But I thought it might be possible to download it anyway (it often is). But as to copyright... the copyright on the composition may be expired, but I doubt the copyright on many recordings has. Anchoress 07:25, 6 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Do you think the version on Project Gutenberg will allow me to download it? It says I need Quicktime Pro to save it on my computer. - AMP'd 16:49, 6 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I downloaded it, at least I downloaded the MP3 at the bottom of the screen, and I don't have QuickTime Pro. I right-clicked on the 'Main site' link and chose 'save target as'. But it isn't a very good quality recording, unfortunately. If you can't download it, email me or chat me on yahoo and I'll send it to you. It played in Real Player. Anchoress 17:11, 6 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It is indeed a poor quality recording, but it seems to be a little better than the .ogg that we have on Wikipedia. Thanks. - AMP'd 18:11, 6 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What language is it?--Kirbytime 05:11, 8 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Italian. There's a famous old recording of it by Josef Schmidt. On the sleeve notes to the LP I have in my collection, it's called "an Italian folk song". JackofOz 05:17, 8 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
This page seems to suggest it is a Neapolitan folk song, translated as The Carnival. Rockpocket 06:02, 8 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
And here's a pretty catchy modern performance. I've Googled for the meaning, but no luck so far. Rockpocket, I suspect that English-language version you found gives it a name ("The Carnival") that is not meant to be a translation of the word "Tiritomba" - but I'm no Italian expert. JackofOz 06:07, 8 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I thought as much. I'm not sure if it has a literal translation, my attempts using online translation tools proved fruitless. I'm sure someone at Wikipedia:WikiProject Italy, or for that matter the language desk, could shed some light on the matter. Rockpocket 18:29, 8 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Without knowing anything about the song (and unable to listen to YouTube from here) – old Italian songs often have nonsense syllables like tiri. —Tamfang 22:35, 11 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

mysterious orange icon in half life 2

Hi. there's a scene in HL2 where you have to connect 3 batteries in order to allow a gate to open up. the building you're in while you do that has a toilet in it. above the toilet are some health and ammo. I used the gravity gun to reach all the stuff over the toilet and I think I saw some sort of small orange square appear on my screen (possibly with rounded corners) - towards the bottom right corner of my screen - and there was a symbol on it which might (or might not!) have been a little like a piece of string. (edit: to make it clear, the square was not an object in the game - more like a symbol to show you'd collected something - like when you pick up health).

it was only there for a short while and I was playing the game very late at night. does anyone recognise what I'm talking about? was I hallucinating?

thanks in advance. spiggy --83.104.131.135 09:24, 8 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What I had in mind was a skateboarder (it doesn't matter who) doing some cool trick in the middle of the air, preferably decked out in vivid athletic gear—it should be chromatically aesthetic, after all.
