"Beautiful Liar"
Song

"Beautiful Liar" is an R&B/Latin pop song recorded by American singer Beyoncé and Colombian singer Shakira. The song was written by Beyoncé, Amanda Ghost, Ian Dench, and StarGate. It is the first song and the first single released from the deluxe edition of Beyoncé's second studio album B’Day, making it the fifth song (fourth outside the U.S.) released from B'Day. The song was produced by production team StarGate and Beyoncé and it was mixed by Gustavo Celis. It has versions in Spanish, English and Spanglish. It holds the distinction of having the largest upward movement on the Billboard Hot 100, moving 91 positions from 94 to 3 the week of April 7 2007.[1]

Background

The duet had been confirmed by Beyoncé in an interview with Univision in December 2006.[2] In a recent MTV interview, she described how she had met Shakira several times at various awards shows over the recent years. After recording the Latin-themed song solo, Beyoncé approached her to appear on it; Shakira accepted.[3]

Beyoncé has stated that the song is about female empowerment and what it means to be one, in keeping with the theme of the album.[4] The protagonists sing about being charmed by the same man; instead of fighting over him, they decide not to start a drama or waste their time.

The original Spanglish version featured Beyoncé singing solo, and this leaked onto the internet in late 2006. However the duet version was recorded (in English) on January 23 2007 in Miami by Gustavo Celis. By February 27 2007 it had leaked onto the Internet. The single started playing on the radio just after the video was premiered on MTV's Total Request Live and BET's 106 and Park on February 28 2007. It premiered on the same day as Beyoncé's other single, "Upgrade U". The song was made available on iTunes on March 20 2007. Puerto Rican reggaeton artist Don Omar has recorded verses to be used in a remix of the song,[5] but was never released.

In the UK, the majority of radio stations such as Radio 1[6] played a more up-beat, dance remix of "Beautiful Liar" by the Freemasons, instead of the original mix. A video was made for the remix from clips of the "Upgrade U" video which is yet to be released in the UK.

Music and structure

"Beautiful Liar" is an R&B song written in the key of G minor.[7] It is written in common time and moves at a moderate 96 beats per minute.[7]

Chart performance

After a short period on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart, "Beautiful Liar" debuted at number 94 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In its second week, the song jumped 91 positions to number three, setting a record for the largest upward movement in the history of the Hot 100 chart.[1] It was due to the anticipated digital release the week prior. On the Billboard Pop 100 chart the song also jumped seventy-four places, from number seventy-seven to number three. "Beautiful Liar" also became one of very few songs to debut at number one on both the Hot Digital Tracks and Hot Digital Songs charts.[4] In mid-May the single climbed to #1 on the Billboard Hot Singles Sales, the fifth from B'day to do so, where after two weeks it was replaced at #1 by Beyonce's former band member Kelly Rowland and her song "Like This" featuring Eve. Digital sales of "Beautiful Liar" stand close to 700,000 copies.

On the international charts, "Beautiful Liar" has performed very well. The song became another hit for both Shakira and Beyoncé throughout Europe and Latin America.

In Latin America, the song debuted at number 32 at the Latin America Top 40, the fourteenth week of 2007,[8] and it has since peaked at number one for two weeks, becoming Beyoncé's biggest hit and first number-one in the region, beating Irreplaceable and Crazy in Love. The single also holds the honor of being the fourth song by an international artist to reach the top.

In Mexico, the song became Beyoncé's third top ten single when it climbed to number-six on May 21st 2007, and her first since her 2002 single, "Baby Boy", it also became the first english top ten single since Shakira's "Hips Don't Lie" on the Official Top 100 Singles Chart, so far the single has climbed to number-two.[10] The track also topped the Digital Singles Chart.[11]

In the United Kingdom, the song made its debut on the UK Singles Chart at number ten, based solely on digital downloads, two weeks before the CD release, making it both Beyoncé's and Shakira's highest debut on the UK Singles Chart on digital downloads alone.[12] The following week the song climbed 5 places to #5 on downloads alone. As of April 22, the song reached the top of the UK Singles Chart, making it Beyoncé's third solo #1 (fifth, in total, counting her career with Destiny's Child) after Crazy In Love & Deja Vu in that country and Shakira's second after Hips Don't Lie. The song spent three weeks at the summit, equaling that of Crazy in Love. In it's 12th week inside the song is Beyoncé's longest running top 10 single, nine of those top 5, and boasts her second largest sales after Crazy in Love, totaling 256,000 (week 14) copies.

In Ireland, the song jumped from number 12 to number 1 making it the third #1 single for Beyoncé, after Crazy in Love and Irreplaceable, 5th with Destiny's Child and the fourth #1 for Shakira after "Whenever, Wherever", "Underneath Your Clothes" and "Hips Don't Lie".

In Japan, Beautiful Liar debuted at number 40 on the Tokyo Hot 100, and jumped 36 positions in a week, reaching the number 4 and making it the first Shakira's Top 5 in Japan, and second Top 10 after her 2001 hit "Whenever, Wherever". The song finally reached number 3 peak position on the chart.

Amassingly, the week finished with three number one debuts in three differents countries.

The song was certificated Gold (35,000) in its third week. However, this has only been a moderate success, with it peaking at #5 and gradually going down the chart.

In Germany and France, the song debuted at number one, making it the Beyoncé's first song at #1 and Shakira's third, and also being the fifth number one debut for this song in only two weeks.

In Spain the song peaked at number one on the Download Singles Chart. The song was certificated platinum (20,000). It's the most successful single for Beyoncé in Spain.

Shakira and Beyonce have since earned the title of "Queens of Europe" by the media[who?] for the fact their persistant European charts dominance.

The song made Shakira's album "Oral Fixation Vol. 2" re-enter the U.K. album chart at #70 rising a place a week later to #69, enabling it legible for a Platinum certification.

Music video

The video was helmed by Jake Nava, who directed several other Beyoncé videos such as "Crazy in Love", "Baby Boy", "Naughty Girl", and Destiny's Child's "Cater 2 U".

At the start of the video the women's faces are masked by smoke. As the video progresses they are featured against several different backgrounds, including: dawn (Beyoncé) and dusk (Shakira); sheets blown in the wind; bamboo covered in yellow orchids; a room with blue neon lighting and Avestan writing on the walls; and finally a background of stormy weather. Slow dance moves and belly dancing are featured heavily throughout the video, with a breakdown after the bridge. The women wear matching hairstyles and black outfits for the entirety of video.

The video premiered on February 28 2007 (the same day as the video for "Upgrade U") on 106 & Park and on TRL. The next day, the video debuted on TRL's countdown at number six.[14][15] The video has since reached #1 seven times and has, as of May 23, 2007, retired from the countdown at number #3. In its 40-day-run on the countdown, the video spent 38 days above the #6 position where it debuted. "Beautiful Liar" was nominated for Video Of The Year at the 2007 BET Awards but lost to "Irreplaceable".
