You may be looking for the template documentation or the overview of standardized templates.

This project seeks to create a complete, standardised set of user warning templates with full documentation and help pages. If you'd like to help, please see the following section or the talk page. Feel free to add yourself to the list of participants if you'd like to help; even if you're not yet sure how to participate but desire to learn. Edit this page if you see a way that it can be improved.

Guidelines

Documentation

The documentation provide both basic and advanced documentation to various aspects of templates.

Layout

  • Warnings should be grouped by date under the heading "Warnings", with the template {{subst:s/wnote}} below the main heading.
  • User warnings and block messages should be placed without line breaks.
  • Messages should be removed without archival after three months or less, depending on the number of warnings. In the case of registered vandals, archiving is up to them so long as recent warnings aren't removed.
  • Optionally, the standardised edit summary is either ( [[WP:UW|maintenance]] ) or ([[WP:UW|maintenance]], removed old warnings).

AOL

Edits via AOL proxies may appear through any of a very large range of proxy servers, even when made by the same user, so that a message addressed to one user is often received by a different user. As a result, messages on talk pages may well fail to reach that user, and instead end up being read by another, unrelated user. The result of this problem is that legitimate users may check their talk page and be confused or aggravated by a large number of warnings that they had nothing to do with. This is the subject of many complaints emailed to the Foundation, and has a noticeably negative effect on the opinions of legitimate users operating from AOL.

To prevent this, warnings should be removed from AOL talk pages much more regularly than usual. How soon to do so is debated, varying from hours to days. Removal after a week is generally accepted.

Indefinitely blocked users

Talk pages of indefinitely blocked users should be cleared of all content except the block notice. This block notice should explain the block reason, or link to the block log which does so.

About the WikiProject

Goals

These are the general objectives the WikiProject seeks to eventually achieve.

  • Templates will consist of four warnings levels 1 - 4 as per guidelines, also applicable to blocks.
  • Include formatting as part of the template, eliminating the need for often conflicting formatting methods used by different users on the same page.
  • Increase the flexibility of each template using parser functions, so that named derivatives i.e. -n become obsolete.
  • Standardise template format, in such a way that their severity can be easily distinguished at a glance, using recognised images and formatting.
    • Templates will not include ==Headers==
    • Templates will not include ~~~~
  • Template naming will be of similar syntax i.e. no spaces, capitals, etc, preferably use a mnemonic and free of redundancy.
  • Use of new vandalism warnings to be promoted over use of test warnings, which will become non blockable. Tests warnings only to be used for obvious tests, anything else covered by varying levels of vandalism warning.
  • All templates made obsolete are to have the relevant redirects added.

Tasks

These are a list of specific tasks that any user can help with.

  • [In Progress] Completely harmonise all user page templates. Review the work to be carried out on the overview page, and volunteer your services.
  • [In Progress] Create how to guide on appropriate use of warning template, and complete documentation.

Generally, you can also help with any of the following.

  • Add any relevant WikiProject or Wikipedia pages to the See Also section.
  • Point anyone who might be interested to the WikiProject and publicise the project.
  • Add any suggestions or ideas to the talk page.
