The Timmins Police Service (TPS) is the police force for the city of Timmins, Ontario, Canada. It was established in 1912.
Gold Smuggling
Over the course of its mandate, the Timmins Police Service have had to deal with different types of crimes over the years, including the white-collar crime of a former Chief of Police, Ralph Paul, who had to resign in 1936 for his involvement with the gold thieves, which at the time, and for years, plagued the City of Timmins with gold smuggling. It was a worldwide problem in Canada, United States, Australia and Europe.[1]
Drug Trafficking
Like any other city, drugs are a problem in Timmins, which take a lot of police resources and time, if not years. Different methods were used to deal with the situation. Project Blackhawk (2007-2008) [2] was one of the largest raid across Ontario, that had for purpose the seizures of guns smuggling from the United States to Canada, and the shutting down of one of the largest meth labs; there were 38 arrests, including two from Timmins. Another one was Project Calvette (2002-2004) [3] that was active for three years, and involved the partnership of 15 police agencies across the country, and resulted in the arrests of 25 individuals, including six from Timmins.
New Police Station
For years, it has been a priority for the Timmins Police Service to get a new station, as the old one didn't meet the current Ontario Building Code requirements and Policing Building Standards[4], and was occupied since 1973, but is no longer able to accommodate the new recruits, whose numbers have more than doubled over the past 30 years. The new high tech police building, with 31,000 sq.ft., was unveiled on August 30, 2007, to the sound of the Timmins Police Pipes & Drums.
