Hannah Montana: The Movie is a Template:Fy American musical film adaptation of American teen sitcom Hannah Montana. The film was directed by Peter Chelsom with screenplay penned by Daniel Berendsen. The film was produced by David Blocker, Billy Ray Cyrus, Alfred Gough, Miles Millar, Steven Peterman and Michael Poryes. The film stars Miley Cyrus, Emily Osment, Jason Earles, Lucas Till, and Billy Ray Cyrus. The twisted tale tells of how Miley Stewart/Hannah Montana's popularity begins to take over her life. On the urging of her father, Miley takes a trip to her hometown of Crowley Corners, Tennessee to get some perspective on what matters the most in her life.

Filming began in April 2008,[6] much of it occurring in Columbia, Tennessee,[7] and Los Angeles, California,[2][8][9] and was completed in July 2008.[10] The film was released in theaters on April 10, 2009 in the United States and Canada.[11] As the teen sitcom originated on Disney Channel, Disney Channel premiered a teaser trailer of the film during their shows. It was released August 18, 2009 on DVD[12] and Blu-ray.[13]

Plot

Miley Stewart has become overwhelmed with her alter-ego, Hannah Montana's, popularity. After being late to her blowout concert and filming her music video ("Best of Both Worlds 2009 Movie Mix"), Oswald, a sneaky undercover journalist for celeb magazine BonChic, overhears that Hannah is keeping a secret (that she is really Miley Stewart) and becomes determined to find out what it is. However, Miley gets into trouble when she ends up in a catfight with Tyra Banks over a pair of shoes at a department store, wanting to buy them as a birthday present for best friend Lilly, but Tyra is presenting it to her friend ("The Good Life"). This results in her missing saying goodbye to brother Jackson who departs for college. Steve Rushton performs at Lily's birthday party. ("Everything I Want") ("Game Over") When Oswald secretly follows her limo to the party, she is forced to attend as Hannah instead of Miley, like she planned, resulting in the guests turning their attention to her instead of Lilly, especially when Hannah is accompanied by Steve Rushton and Days Difference in her performance of ("Let's Get Crazy").[14][15] Oliver and Rico try to stop Lilly from leaving, but the party is now ruined by an exploding cake.

Hannah and Tyra's fight is splashed across front pages across the media, and Miley's father, Robby, is left furious about the fact her popstar life could threaten to take over for good. That same day, they leave for the World Music Awards in New York on a private jet, but when the plane lands, Miley instead finds herself in Crowley Corners, Tennessee, her hometown. It soon emerges that Robby had the plane travel to Tennessee instead because of it being her grandmother, Ruby's, birthday and that he wants her to see the life she could have had. When the dismayed Miley asks if her career as Hannah Montana is over, Robby says to ask again in two weeks' time. But Miley won't let go of being Hannah Montana.

In Tennessee, Robby and Miley have their own relationships. Robby has a love interest, Lorelai, played by Melora Hardin, and Miley develops a deep connection with a childhood friend Travis Brody, played by Lucas Till, after he helps her with riding her old horse, Blue Jeans.

That night, Miley looks at a picture of her mom and her when she is young, missing her mother. Meanwhile, Miley is chastened after Robby mentions that she seems to want to be Hannah Montana more than she wants to be with her family. Oswald, meanwhile, follows Miley to her hometown. Later, she tries to write a song, but when Travis ignores it, she is unable to write. Meanwhile, there is a firm battle developing with the residents of Crowley Corners and a team of developers who are planning to destroy the meadows and building a shopping mall on the site. At a barn party that night, several singers contribute to the charity to save Crowley Corners, singing ("Back to Tennessee" by Billy Ray Cyrus), and ("Crazier" by Taylor Swift). While Miley then sings ("Hoedown Throwdown") until the mall developers arrive. Travis and Miley dance, as do Robby and Lorelei. Travis suggests that Hannah Montana should appear to play a special gig, seeing that Miley knows her (Miley had lied to Travis that she saved Hannah's life in a surfing accident)as a way to save the meadows from being ruin for construction.

Miley spends time with Lilly, who has arrived along with Hannah Montana's band and crew, and the two make up. She has a rough time adjusting to farm life while trying to be herself and Hannah, and Oswald takes a picture of her and Lilly, and Lilly is the one that invited Oswald to come here for a secret by accident. When Miley sees Travis, talking to him as Hannah, she encourages him to ask Miley out; he decides to take her advice. She promises to go, but has been invited to dinner with the Mayor by Lorelai (Lilly had been disguised as Hannah at the time). Miley struggles to switch between the two venues as both forms. Eventually she lets her guard down and is caught by Travis holding her Hannah outfit. He immediately rejects Miley and she is devastated. Matters are further complicated when Robby has to break up with Lorelai, needing to take care of his daughter.

Miley writes her own song, "Butterfly Fly Away", which she and Robby Ray sing together to cheer her up. Upon finding the finished chicken coop that he and Miley were building and hearing the Hannah Montana song "Rock Star", Travis decides to go to the concert to support Miley.

The day of the final concert arrives and while performing, Hannah suddenly stops midsong, seeing Travis show up. She explains to the crowd that she cannot do this anymore, saying that that where she was was home. Hannah then removes her outfit and reveals that she is Miley and can no longer continue being Hannah, declaring herself unable to lead her double life anymore. She then sings her own song she created; ("The Climb"), but afterward the crowd pleads with her to carry on being Hannah, promising her they won't tell anyone her secret. Suddenly, Oswald appears and takes a picture on his mobile phone but after encouragement not to by his twin daughters, he changes his mind and quits his job. The concert ("You'll Always Find Your Way Back Home") is a success and Miley departs Tennessee again after kissing Travis, her faith in living a double life fully restored, and Robby and Lorelai renew their relationship.

Production

Development

On the April 2 episode of her "The Miley & Mandy Show" series on YouTube, Miley spoke to Ryan Seacrest and she spoke on flying to Tennessee in "two weeks" and would be staying for several months. She went to say there would be many guest stars, and herself riding horses and attending school.[16] E! Online reported there was an accident on the set during the filming on June 3, 2008. A huge wind blew a projection screen into a Ferris wheel full of passengers, who were extras for the movie. Fortunately, there was no serious injury. "When the wind caught it, all the cables were loose. It started [flying]," extra Brenda Blackford told Nashville station WKRN-TV. "I was watching to see which corner of it was gonna hit the Ferris wheel, because it was unavoidable." Miley Cyrus and her father Billy Ray were not on the set when the accident happened. Disney stated: "During a break in the filming of Hannah Montana: The Movie, a minor accident occurred involving a piece of production equipment Fortunately, there were only a few minor injuries. Medical personnel have treated the extras and crew involved. None of the cast was on the set. Filming has resumed."[17] The movie unleashed a $35.0 million dollars into a production budget.

A song called "Backwards" (co-written by Marcel and Tony Mullins and recorded by Rascal Flatts) and a song by Taylor Swift, "Crazier," will be featured in the movie as well as two hit songs by UK rocker Steve Rushton.[18][19]

Filming

Filming for Hannah Montana: The Movie began on April 2008 in Los Angeles, California and Columbia, Tennessee.[6] It entered post-production in July 2008, and was released on April 10, 2009.

There is a carnival scene filmed at Smiley Hollow in Ridgetop, TN where Peter Gunn's character hunts for the real Hannah in the crowd and he finds Jackson selling 'Hannah wigs' and everyone around him looks like Hannah from the back so he turns them all around looking for the real one.[20] Also filmed there were a few musical numbers, including "The Climb," and "You'll Always Find Your Way Back Home." 500 paid extras and 1500 volunteer extras were on hand during filming of these scenes.[20]

The movie features two songs by UK artist Steve Rushton, including hit song "Game Over". Steve wrote both songs and performs them at Lilly's birthday party on Santa Monica Pier. In some scenes, Miley will be riding horses.[16]

A scene was filmed in the Cool Springs Galleria Mall (south of Nashville). It was filmed in the woman's shoe department of the Belk store. Miley Cyrus, Vanessa L. Williams, and Tyra Banks were all in the scene. Hannah fights with Tyra over a pair of shoes.[21] Scenes were also filmed at Franklin High School. The school stood in for the fictional Seaview High School in which Miley and Lilly attend.Cite error: The <ref> tag has too many names (see the help page). The score was originally to be written by Oscar-nominated composer Alan Silvestri, and he penned a new song with Glen Ballard, "Butterfly Fly Away", which is sung in the film. However, he had to drop out due to a scheduling conflict with G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, which he was also signed to score. Stepping in was composer John Debney, who recorded his score with the Hollywood Studio Symphony at the Sony Scoring Stage.[22] The album debuted #2 on the Billboard 200 with 137,592 sold first week, and after four weeks claimed the #1 spot.

As of December 2008, the film has been issued a G rating from the MPAA for all ages admitted.[23]

On January 16, 2009, the film's official trailer was released, along with the official movie poster on a website.[24] Additionally, a sneak peek of the film was released on December 2008 on Disney Channel.[citation needed]

On February 16, 2009, an exclusive Disney Channel preview was premiered alongside the music videos "The Climb"[25] and "Hoedown Throwdown"[26] from the Hannah Montana: The Movie soundtrack previewed by Miley Cyrus. Cyrus also promoted the film and performed the film's lead single "The Climb" on various talk shows including, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Good Morning America, The Tyra Banks Show, and Rachael Ray. She also performed her song on American Idol on April 16, 2009.[27]

A video game based on the film was released on April 7, 2009, three days before the film was released.[28] The game was revealed by ESRB.[29] The premiere of Hannah Montana: The Movie was held on April 2, 2009 in Los Angeles,[30] The UK premiere was held in London on April 23, 2009 and was released in cinemas (UK and Ireland)on May 1, 2009.[31] Play Along Toys released dolls and toys based on the film.

Hannah Montana: The Movie was released on Blu-ray Disc and DVD on August 18, 2009.[32] Hannah Montana: The Movie will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on September 7 in the UK.

Reception

Reviews

The movie received mixed reviews from critics. Rotton Tomatoes scored the film a 46% out of 109 reviews, and the averge made 5.5 out of 10 averge rating.[33]

Box office performance

The film was a huge box office success, nearly tripling the gross revenue of a previous film adaption The Lizzie McGuire Movie. It ended up grossing over $17 million in its' opening day, and over $32.3 million in its' opening weekend, earning the #1 spot at the box office. The film grossed nearly $80 million domestically, and over $73 million overseas, and nearly $153 million altogether.

Awards and nominations

On March 28, 2009, just before the film was released, the movie's song "The Climb" was nominated to visit at the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards 2009. On May 31, 2009, Cyrus won an award at the 2009 MTV Movie Awards for "Best Song of the Movie" and was nominated "Breakthrough Female Performance", but lost to Ashley Tisdale. It also has 4 Teen Choice Award nominations.
