Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by 72.237.107.17 (talk) at 22:34, 31 January 2010 (Lobster). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.

  • Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
  • Offer a correction if possible.
  • References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
  • Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 07:12 on 14 August 2024) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
  • Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
  • Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems because this is not a talk page. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
  • No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
  • Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
  • Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed or determined not to be an error, or the item has been rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

Errors in In the news

Template:ITN-Update A plaintiff in the suit against Toyota alleges that the accidents were caused by an electronic throttle control problem, rather than pedals or floor mats alone. Currently, the ITN headline alienates this viewpoint. Considering that this information could potentially influence a future jury, I propose that we change the headline to something along the lines of "Following the discovery of problems involving abrupt acceleration, Toyota announces the recall of 7.5 million vehicles worldwide (Toyota Camry pictured)."   — C M B J   04:51, 30 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Tweaked to an equivalent sentence. Shubinator (talk) 05:54, 30 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see why a private plaintiff in a civil lawsuit should have anything to do with our reporting of what other people are saying. Physchim62 (talk) 18:49, 30 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Countless sources say that the source of the problem is uncertain or unknown. Take a look at this Scientific American article for a short synopsis of the most prevalent hypotheses.   — C M B J   20:26, 30 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Australia Open

Shouldn't Federer beating Murray be in the ITN section, as well as Serena Williams' victory? 84.92.117.93 (talk) 16:21, 31 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have just added him on. We were waiting for an adequate update to the Australian Open article (per discussion at WP:ITN/C). I will swap it over to his image shortly - Dumelow (talk) 19:24, 31 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I made the switch, didn't have time earlier - Dumelow (talk) 20:26, 31 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Not to mention, Jolly Janner, that wiped out a photo of a woman for one of a man. It happens. -SusanLesch (talk) 20:29, 31 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think US bias can sometimes be an issue or perhaps a perceived issue for Wikipedia. I don't think male bias has ever been an issue for Wikipedia. Jolly Ω Janner 20:34, 31 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I will just point out that I didn't change it for any perceived bias, it was always my intention to update the image (see my original comment shortly after posting, above). Serena had been up for 20 hours, Federer will likely be replaced by whatever the top news is tomorrow. I like to try to keep the pic as "fresh" as possible by changing it when we are able to (especially if it has been a while since it was last changed) - Dumelow (talk) 20:39, 31 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Or, you know, you could remove this irrelevant slop from the front page since wikipedia has a bizarre bias towards tennis and shows the winner of this every year. How is any sport even important enough to get on a very limited list when actual news gets passed up every day? ...Let alone Tennis championships of all things. It's sort of an embarrassment. --66.188.134.175 (talk) 21:48, 31 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Errors in Did you know?

For the Mediterranean slipper lobster, the front page says the water color is all that remains. However, the article says they are rare, not extinct. Should that now be corrected?--72.237.107.17 (talk) 22:34, 31 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
