Syosset is a hamlet (and a census-designated place) in Nassau County, New York, in the northeastern section of Town of Oyster Bay near the North Shore of Long Island. The population was 18,544 at the 2000 census. It is served by the Syosset railroad station, the Syosset Post Office, the Syosset Central School District, the Syosset Public Library, the Syosset Fire Department, and the Jericho Water District.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 5.0 square miles (12.9 km2), all land.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 18,544 people, 6,281 households, and 5,307 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 3,719.7 per square mile (1,434.8/km2). There were 6,354 housing units at an average density of 1,274.5/sq mi (491.6/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 85.26% White, 0.50% African American, 0.04% Native American, 12.66% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.56% from other races, and 0.98% from two or more races. 2.92% are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 6,281 households out of which 39.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 74.7% were married couples living together, 7.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 15.5% were non-families. 13.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.92 and the average family size was 3.21.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 26.0% under the age of 18, 5.6% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 27.1% from 45 to 64, and 15.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 96.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.5 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $90,929, and the median income for a family was $99,704. Males had a median income of $68,255 versus $44,229 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $38,537. About 1.6% of families and 2.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 2.4% of those under age 18 and 4.3% of those age 65 or over.
