Indians in Venezuela form one of the smaller populations of the Indian diaspora. About 690 East Indians lives in the country. A majority of East Indians live in the Greater Caracas Municipality in Venezuela. East Indians in the country consists of immigrants from India and Venezuela's neighboring countries such as Guyana, Suriname & Trinidad and Tobago. India also has an embassy in Caracas.
History
During the oil-related high-income years of the 1970s, there were around 400 NRIs in this country.
The Indian community consisted of personnel from the petroleum and petrochemical sectors, as well as a large number of traders. Many of them had taken their families with them to Venezuela, whether from India or elsewhere. Most of the traders belonged to the Sindhi community but there were also some persons from Gujarat, Punjab and the South Indian States.[1]
Current Status
Most of the East Indians are Professors, Businessmen, IT Professionals and retailers and they earn higher per capita income than the national average.[1]Hinduism and Indian Spirituality is also growing in Venezuela.
