Don't the winners walk off the stage with those trophies? If so, they might still have them, unless they were talked or threatened into giving them back. Actually, I don't think they get their actual trophies in the ceremony. They get a mock-up for the presentation, and the actual engraved trophy is given later. I'm not sure which awards ceremonies this applies to, but I have seen "behind the scenes" stories where at least one awards ceremony works this way. --Jayron32 04:56, 12 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I think the deal is, they want to keep the results a "secret" until the envelope is actually opened; hence the whole bit where they drag out some accountant to ensure that the voting was accurately tallied. If they engraved the awards ahead of time, then it would exponentially increase the number of people who have access to who "won", which would be a security risk for keeping the winners secret. --Jayron32 05:03, 12 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Are Apple Macs overrepresented in movies and TV?

I read that Apple Macs have a market share of ~10% yet it seems much higher in the TV shows and movies I watch. If a non-Mac is shown on screen, it is rarely identified as a well known PC brand and the programme makers seem to out of their way to disguise the machine's brand (though strangely, the brand of the monitor is not hidden). For example: in the Stargate franchise, I often noticed NEC monitors but the laptops in Stargate Atlantis were disguised by pretending the screen was in the base and always presenting the bottom of the case to the camera - I could easily recognise fan vents and panels used to access the battery, memory, disk, etc. So why is it that I rarely see Dells, HPs, Acers and so on while the other half of the TV and movie characters have clearly identifiable Macs and are using them the righ way up? Is this simply product placement or just influenced by the higher prevalence of Macs on the desks of creative types like set designers? Astronaut (talk) 07:25, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It's not product placement. It's mainly because Apple computers are (rightly or wrongly) perceived as being cool and trendy. If the programme makers want to depict a computer-using character as cool they just put a Mac in front of them. --Viennese Waltz 07:45, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There is the transcript here of an answer Matt Groening himself gave to this question when he was asked it during a BBC TV children's show. He said:

"Yellow wasn't my choice. You initially work in black and white, and one of the animators suggested that we colour them yellow, and it looked right. Another explanation I heard is they made them yellow as a joke so people would go crazy fiddling with the color settings on their TVs trying to make the characters look "right." Special Effects

I'm watching TrueBlood right now. How do they do the special effect where the vampires go really fast, yet everything else is normal speed. I would imagine that effect is done by some compositing process where they film the actor on a green screen or insert a CGI model and overlay the running shot over the background. This is, of course, a huge oversimplification of the process required to achieve a convincing composite shot, and there are many other effects that go into the process of making the vampires in True Blood run incredibly fast. If you go to youtube and look up compositing, there will be many examples of the process of combining CGI and real actors into one shot, or in some cases combining multiple set pieces into a single scene. 206.131.39.6 (talk) 16:43, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

German version of Peter Schilling's A different story.

I'm having trouble finding the equivalent reference desk in the German Wikipedia, where I would like to ask if anyone knows where I can find a copy of the German lyrics for Peter Schilling's "A Different Story." The English lyrics, whether they are originally in English or not, are hard to make out for sure, so if there is a German version or a German translation I would like to try to translate that to see if it helps me.

I don't think he recorded that song in German. In any event, I wasn't able to find any mention let alone recording of it. It seems to have been released separately in Germany, three years later, in 1992, on WEA Records, but this was in English as well. The OP seems to be saying that there are three seasons (series for the UK readers) of the TV show WordGirl although IMDb only lists the first two. The OP would like to know who will be in the cast (future cast) for season three. At least, that's how I read it. FYI, season three started airing just last month. Yes, our WordGirl article lists 59 episodes, which is ahead of the TV.com link or IMDB link (both linked from our WordGirl article). I haven't been able to find any information about cast changes in Season 3; this link may be of interest, though it was last revised back in May. in pokemon mystery dungeon: explorers of darkness, what do you have to do to be allowed to evolve your main two pokemon? I had read that you have to defeat darkrai, the first time, with your partner and cresselia, afterward recruiting Palkia. Calculating American Football yardage with a fumble

Let's say a running back runs 8 yards from scrimage, then fumbles. The ball bounces backwards 2 yards and gets recovered by a player on his team, who is downed immediately. So the net gain for the team is six, but what about the individual stats? Does the running back get 8 yards or six? Does the recovering player get the negative 2? The running back gets credit for all yards rushed before the fumble. He also gets docked with a fumble. In this case, a fumble recovered instead of a fumble turnover. If the person who picked up the ball rushed, he would get separate rushing yards. With the exception of the fumble, this is no different than how a lateral is handled for rushing yards. Division games being more "equal" (NFL)

So in the NFL, people frequently reference the "fact" that games within the division are more equal, ie, both teams have similar chances of victory, regardless of records. Is there any evidence of this? Do upsets happen more frequently within the division? I believe you are misreading what it means by "more equal". In an NFL season, each team will play each team in its own division twice. Once game is at home. The other game is away. Statistically, away games are harder to win that home games (hence the "home field advantage"). Because the division teams are played once at home and once away, the overall effect is that the division games are more equal. -- kainaw ™ 18:47, 15 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There also may be a "rival" effect whereby teams tend to play better when playing a perceived rival. After all, there have been years in College Football when even a down-on-its-luck Michigan team manages to beat Ohio State to ruin their season. It is the same melody as the original from Wizard of Oz (film), or very closely so. The arrangement and rhythm closely resembles the rather famous and popular version by Israel Kamakawiwoʻole, which featured a medley with "What a Wonderful World". I'm uncertain about anything done in a later episode, but what Taylor did in this link I included above is most certainly not what IZ does -- Taylor goes way off, and that's what I'm asking about. Did he just go off by himself, or does someone else (i.e. someone who sings professionally) do it and he's following that. It's just so very impressive if he were to be the one who did that himself and he's only 18 and laughs on the stage because he's so nervous. I mean, that's real talent. Similarly there are apparently longform and shortform in improvisational theatre (where long is a bunch of sketches or scenes with a common underlying arc, short is just one, or where the sketches are unrelated). Stand up comedy about current US politics

I remember watching a stand up, I can't remember by which comedian. It was about US politics recently. The story he was telling was about someone who had been out of touch with the world for a decade. Someone else was filling this out of touch thing in on what had happened. He was saying things like "Oh yeah, there's a black president" and the other guy was like "what? No way". I can't find it either, but I know what you're talking about...I think the way I remember it is that the guy was in a coma for 20 years, and there was another President Bush and another Iraq war, and now a black president. How widespread are widescreen (16:9) TVs?

Are there any statistics on the ratio of widescreen TVs compared to the old-style 4:3 TVs that are currently in-use in US households?

A May 2010 report puts US HDTV ownership at 65% of households; I'd think "widescreen" is roughly the same as "HD" for this purpose. Note also that only about half of those HDTVs are receiving HD programming. — Lomn 13:15, 19 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Looking for a specific video

Hello, I am looking for a video to which I can't remember the name of. It involves a man who sets up a turntable out on the street. When something bad happens to someone else, he uses the turntable to turn back time and make it right. He put his turntable away, but his actions (if I remember correctly) cause something else to go wrong to another person, so he has to get his turntable back out again and rewind time again, and the process repeats.
