Coprophilia (from Greek κόπρος, kópros—excrement and φιλία, filía—liking, fondness), also called scatophilia or scat,[1] is the paraphilia involving sexual pleasure from feces.[2][3] In the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychiatric Association (DSM-IV-TR), it is classified under 302.9 Paraphilia Not Otherwise Specified and has no diagnostic criteria other than a general statement about paraphilias that says "the diagnosis is made if the behavior, sexual urges, or fantasies cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning". Furthermore, the DSM-IV-TR notes, "Fantasies, behaviors, or objects are paraphilic only when they lead to clinically significant distress or impairment (e.g. are obligatory, result in sexual dysfunction, require participation of nonconsenting individuals, lead to legal complications, interfere with social relationships)". Although not all coprophiles would necessarily be sadomasochists, little data on the prevalence of this behavior is available except from studies of the SM community. A study of 164 male sadomasochists from Finland from two sadomasochism clubs[4] found that 18.2% had engaged in coprophilia; 3% as a sadist, 6.1% as a masochist, and 9.1% as both. 18% of heterosexuals and 17% of homosexuals in the study pool had tried coprophilia, showing no statistically significant difference between heterosexuals and homosexuals. In a separate article,[5] a subset of 12 men from that study who engaged in bestiality was analyzed and found that 54.5% of the 12 men had engaged in coprophilic behaviors, compared with only 8.3% of 12 of the men who did not engage in bestiality who matched up logically with each of the 12 who did.

Cleveland steamer

The Cleveland steamer is a colloquial term for a form of coprophilia, where someone defecates on their partner's chest. If they then rock back and forth or roll on the feces, it is referred to as a Cleveland steamroller or Rolling Brownout.

The term received news attention through its use in a U.S. Congress staff hoax email and being addressed by the United States Federal Communications Commission.[6]

  • In episode 11 of Prison Break season 2 ("Bolshoi Booze"), former correctional officer Roy Geary is propositioning a prostitute in his hotel room. The scene is shot from beneath a clear glass table, with the prostitute saying, "A Cleveland what?"
  • In South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut, the four boys watched a German man defecating on Cartman's mother on the internet.
  • In 2002, the Detroit, Michigan talk radio show Deminski & Doyle began an educational half-hour discussion of urban-legendary sex acts with the statement, "Try to describe carefully what a 'Cleveland steamer' would be...".[7] Fifteen months later, the Federal Communications Commission proposed a fine of $27,500 to the station's owner, Infinity Broadcasting, through a Notice of Apparent Liability (NAL)[8] that specifically referenced Cleveland steamer in the notice.[7]
  • In 2005, a young staffer for U.S. Representative Jane Harman made news by sending around a hoax email stating that one of Lyndon LaRouche's followers "decided to drop her pants and plopped a Hot Cleveland Steamer on our carpet. House Janitorial Services is currently cleaning up this wretched filth."[9] The email was sent in response to a string of e-mail messages poking fun at LaRouche followers.[9] By the end of the year, the event was listed as part of the best of Heard on the Hill (HOH).[10]
  • In Australia's Big Brother in 2005, the housemates discussed the process of the Cleveland steamer, in the "Uncut" version of the show (later named "Adults Only"; taken off the air in 2006).[11]
  • The parody band Tenacious D song "Rock Your Socks" references coprophilia in their lyric, "All we're askin' you to do / Is drop trou / And squeeze out / A Cleveland Steamer on my chest (Ooh!)"[12]
  • In the episode of Family Guy, Season 3, Episode 9, "Mr. Saturday Knight". Peter Griffin has lost his job at The Happy-Go Lucky Toy Factory and in one scene is working as a street prostitute. Lois and the family pull up in their car and Peter proceeds to ask Lois if she would like 'a Cleveland Steamer'.[13]
  • In the animated television series Metalocalypse, William Murderface from the fictional death metal band named Dethklok is apparently a coprophiliac. This information is revealed during a psychological profile.[14]
  • Humorcore metal band Psychostick reference the "Cleveland Steamer" in their song "Orgasm=Love" on their debut studio album We Couldn't Think of a Title.
  • In the critically acclaimed 1989 Woody Allen film Crimes and Misdemeanors, Woody Allen's character Clifford Stern remarks to his wife Wendy, played by Joanna Gleason, "a strange man defecated on my sister". Her response - "why?" This followed a scene in which Stern's sister recounts her crappy experience with a blind date, telling Stern that the man "went to the bathroom on me".
  • In Broken Lizard's The Slammin' Salmon, Paul Soter's character, a cook, asks his Hispanic sous-chef "Cómo se dice Cleveland Steamer?"
