Bigg Boss 4 in 2010 is the fourth season of the Indian reality TV show Bigg Boss, which started airing on Colors from October 3, 2010. This will be longer than its predecessor, Bigg Boss 3 and will last for 14 weeks (96 days). The show is being hosted by Salman Khan.[1][2] During the launch on October 3, fourteen handpicked housemates[3] entered the house located in Lonavla, a hill station, about 100 kilometers east of Mumbai in the Indian state of Maharashtra. The housemates, considered strangers for each other, will spend 96 days (14 weeks) locked out together under the supervision of 32 cameras fitted around the house.[4]
Housemates
Aanchal Kumar
Aanchal Kumar (age 31) hails from Chandigarh. Aanchal is an Indian model and has done cameo roles in Bluffmaster! and Fashion.[5] She has also done international fashion shows.
Abbas Kazmi
Abbas Kazmi by profession is a criminal lawyer famous for being the lawyer of 26/11 Mumbai terror attack accused Amir Kasab.[6]
Ashmit Patel
Ashmit Patel (age 32) is an actor who works in Hindi films. His sister is Ameesha Patel, also a film actor. His popular films include Murder and Silsilay. He gained popularity after he was seen in a MMS clip involving foreplay with former girlfriend Riya Sen.
Begum (Ali) Saleem
Ali Saleem (age 31) is a Pakistani television host, actor, scriptwriter and impressionist. He cross-dresses as a woman wearing a sari and asks influential guests provocative questions in his show "Late Night with Begum Nawazish Ali".
Devender (Bunty)
Devender (Bunty) has been accused of robbery and was on the most wanted list of Delhi police. Dibakar Banerjee has made a film on him, Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!, where Abhay Deol played the protagonist.[7]
On day 2, after Bunty kept continuously breaking the rules (sleeping throughout the day, covering the cameras with socks and used abusive language against Bigg Boss) he was asked to leave the house and was ejected from the show. During his stay, Bunty received the maximum number of votes when the Bigg Boss asked the contestants to nominate any one person. While the inmates thought the nomination was for eviction, Bunty was actually made the captain of the house.[8] Later he was evicted on day 2.
Dolly Bindra
Dolly Bindra is a television actress. She featured in the serial Mere Apne on 9x channel and Hum Sab Saath Hain on Sony. She has also done few supporting roles in films like Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya?. She entered the Bigg Boss house on Day 21 as the second wild card entry. She was ejected from the house on day 45 after a fight with Samir Soni.[6] On 27 November, Dolly made a return to the Bigg Boss house as a wild card entry, after beating Rahul Bhatt in an online poll.[9]
Hrishant Goswami
Hrishant Goswami (age 25) is a model and winner of the 2004 Gladrags Manhunt contest.[10]
Khali
Khali also known as The Great Khali (age 38) is an Indian professional wrestler and a former power-lifter who won Mr. India title in 1995 and 1996. Khali is currently signed to World Wrestling Entertainment. He also served as a police officer in the state of Punjab. He entered into the Bigg Boss house on Day 13.
Manoj Tiwari
Manoj Tiwari (age 45) is a Bhojpuri Movie actor, singer and director who acts in Bhojpuri films. He has been credited with reviving the Bhojpuri film industry. He has appeared in over 30 Bhojpuri language films.
Rahul Bhatt
Rahul Bhatt (age 28) is an Indian fitness trainer and a film actor. The son of famous film director Mahesh Bhatt, Rahul gained unwitting notoriety in 2009, following revelations that David Headley, one of those held responsible for the 2008 Mumbai attacks, had befriended him.[7]

Sakshi Pradhan
Sakshi Pradhan was the winner of Splitsvilla. She regained popularity when she was involved in a MMS scandal with the director of the reality show Splitsvilla.[citation needed]
Samir Soni
Samir Soni (age 42) is a Punjabi born in London. Prior to his film career, Samir was an investment banker. In the entertainment industry, he started his career as a model and then making his acting debut as Ashok Mathur in Doordarshan's A Mouthful Of Sky (1996), based on Ashok Banker's script and directed by Mahesh Bhatt. He made his film debut opposite actress Mamta Kulkarni in China Gate (1998). In television, he has worked in the television series Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin and Saaksshi. He has also worked with Amitabh Bachchan in Hindi movie Baghban. He was ejected from the house on day 45 after a fight with Dolly Bindra,[6] but re-entered on day 49 after a change in Bigg Boss decision.
Sara Khan
Sara Khan (age 21) is an Indian model and actress. She won the Miss Madhya Pradesh title in 2007, the Best New Talent award given by IndianTelevision.com in 2008, and the STAR Parivaar Award for the "Best Patni" (Best Wife) category in 2009. She rose to fame for her character, Sadhna, in Sapna Babul Ka...Bidaai.
Seema Parihar
Seema Parihar (age 41) is a former woman bandit and a member of Indian political party, Samajwadi Party. ‘Wounded’ – a film based on the real-life story based on her and she acts as herself in the movie.[11]
Shweta Tiwari
Shweta Tiwari (age 30) is an Indian television and film actress with her claim to fame is of the role of Prerna in Balaji Telefilms's popular television show Kasautii Zindagii Kay that used to be aired on STAR Plus. Her ex-husband Raja Chaudhary had earlier participated in Bigg Boss (Season 2). She was also seen in another reality show Is Jungle Se Mujhe Bachao.
Veena Malik
Veena Malik (age 32) is a Pakistani actress, model and comedian. Although she has acted in films, her fame derives from her TV appearances. She established herself as one of the leading women in the Pakistani TV industry with her ability to mimic others and improvise.

Features of Bigg Boss 4
Wild Card Entry
- On 14 October, it was announced that the WWE wrestler, Dalip Singh Rana also known as The Great Khali is going to replace Devender (Bunty), who was ejected from the house on day 2 for bad behavior and breaching of house rules.
- On 25 October, Dolly Bindra entered the Bigg Boss house.
- On 27 November, Dolly Bindra again entered the Bigg Boss house.
Captain of the House
Every week, one person would be announced by the Bigg Boss as the Captain of the House. He will receive all the facilities, such as living in the Elite Bedroom, Exemption from nominations for that week, Right to nominate one person in the house who will be directly nominated for that week regardless of the other members nominations. Other members will have to wash his/her clothes, vessels, cook food for him, etc. He/She will be the king of the house for that week. This is similar to the Head of Household position in other Big Brother series around the world.
Delights Bedroom
This is the new feature added to Bigg Boss 4. Delights Bedroom is a big room inside the common bedroom. Where all the members will live in the common room, only The captain of the House will have access to this room and will get a key for this room to keep his/her stuff and lock it. This is similar to the Head of Household room in other Big Brother's around the world.
Guests
Throughout the series various guests may appear from time to time for a visit.
- Ali Merchant remained in the house as a guest from day 30 to day 41.
- On 6 November 2010, the team of Golmaal 3 including its director Rohit Shetty and cast members, Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor, Tusshar Kapoor, Shreyas Talpade and Kunal Khemu appeared on the show for the promotion of their film.[12]
- On 16 November, Pamela Anderson entered the Bigg Boss house.[13]
- On 19 November 2010, the team of Break Ke Baad; Imran Khan and Kunal Kohli came on the show to promote their film.
- On 27 November 2010, the team of Dabangg, Arbaaz Khan and Sonakshi Sinha appeared on the show.[14]

Highlights of the week
Week 1 (3rd October to 9th October)
- Day 1: Bigg Boss asked all the contestants to vote. While all of them thought it is for the eviction, Bunty received the highest votes and on the contrary, Bigg Boss made Bunty the "Captain" of the house.
- Day 2: Bunty was ejected, due to his bad behaviour, abusing and cursing Bigg Boss, breaking all the rules of the house and trying to cover the cameras by socks.
- Day 3: Bigg Boss gives a mini task for a chat show with Begum and the 4 nominated housemates. Transformation from Ali to Begum is no small occasion and all the women inmates got together to help her.
- Day 4: Argument over breakfast between Veena Malik and Hrishant leads to a heating debate where most of the other inmates got involved in consoling the inmates.
- Day 5: While the housemates are having paranthas for breakfast, Manoj Tiwari who is a vegetarian doesn’t appreciate sharing the same plate.
- Day 6: Shweta Tiwari gets a cake to celebrate her daughter's birthday. Abbas Kazmi was evicted from the show.
- Day 7: Begum was made the captain of the house.
Week 2 (10th October to 16th October)
- Day 8: Sakshi was nominated via captain's vote. The housemates nominated Seema and Samir through open nominations.
- Day 12: Rahul was elected the captain of the house.
- Day 13: Sakshi was evicted from the Bigg Boss House. After exiting, Sakshi nominated Begum. WWE wrestler The Great Kahli appeared on the show.
Week 3 (17th October to 23rd October)
- Day 17: Manoj was elected captain of the house. Rahul was ordered to wash clothes of the inmates, after he failed to enforce Bigg Boss rules in his captaincy.[17]
- Day 20: Begum was evicted from the house.[18] Before exiting, Begum nominated Khali.
Week 4 (24th October to 31st October)
- Day 21: Dolly Bindra entered the house as a wild card entry.[19]
- Day 22: Housemates decide to boycott Dolly due to her behavior and verbal fight with Shweta.[20]
- Day 24: Ashmit was elected the captain of the house.
- Day 25: Dolly manipulates Ashmit and Hrishant to believe that she is innocent and pins the night’s chaos on Sara. Consequently, after being manipulated, Ashmit and Hrishant plan to nominate Sara and Shweta.
- Day 26: Bigg Boss stages a fake eviction process and sends Sara to a secret room. Before exiting, Sara nominates Dolly and Samir. [21]
- Day 27: Salman Khan enters the house and spends a day with the inmates.[22]
Week 5 (1st November to 7th November)
- Day 28: Most of the inmates had been breaking rule of talking about nominations. Bigg Boss cancelled the nomination procedure and nominated those contestants who have been breaking this rule. Late at night, Sara re-entered the house.
- Day 30: Ali Merchant enters the house as a guest.
- Day 31: Bigg Boss announces that Ali and Sara will marry on November 10 inside the House. Dolly has an argument with Ashmit regarding task. Hrishant becomes the new house captain beating Samir 6-5 in vote count.
- Day 33: Rahul is evicted from the house.
Week 6 (8th November to 14th November)
- Day 35: Ashmit and Dolly have a verbal fight in the kitchen. Housemates nominate Dolly, Ashmit and Aanchal for next week's nominations.
- Day 38: Sara Khan and Ali Merchant wed inside the house.
- Day 39: Aanchal was evicted from the house. Shweta becomes the house captain beating Veena 7-5 in vote count. Ali Merchant was also asked to leave the house.
Week 7 (15th November to 21st November)
- Day 42: Dolly was nominated via captain's vote. The housemates nominate Sara and Khali through nominations.[23] Dolly and Seema had a fight in the Kitchen; Seema subsequently decides to quit the kitchen team.
- Day 44: Dolly has a verbal fight with Shweta and Samir. Pamela Anderson enters the house as a guest. Bigg Boss decides to cancel the nominations.
- Day 45: Samir and Dolly were evicted from the house following a huge fight in which they broke most of the rules.[24]
- Day 47: Pamela left the house. Salman Khan invited Dolly and Sameer. Dolly apologised to Sameer and admitted her mistakes. Salman asked Sameer if he wants to re-enter the house. Sameer agreed, however the decision was left to Bigg Boss.
Week 8 (22nd November to 29th November)
- Day 49: Samir returns back to the house. Seema was elected the new captain beating Khali in the vote count. Ashmit was nominated via captain's vote, while the housemates nominated Shweta, Hrishant, Samir and Veena.[25]
- Day 50: Bigg Boss has given a task to the leftover contestants of the house that they have to portray the characters of hardcore villagers and modern city people. Bigg Boss has divided them into 2 teams. The village team comprised of Shweta, Samir, Veena and is headed by Ashmit. Whereas the modern city people team is headed by Seema and it comprises of Sara, Hrishant, Manoj and Khali. The city people have to stay inside the house and dress in a modern way and eat only continental food. Whereas the villagers have to stay in the garden area, dress in the village garb and eat food made on stoves. Both the teams have to remain in their respective areas, which is defined by the ‘Lakshman Rekha’. Both the teams have a whale of a time gawking at the participants of the other team and commenting on their dressing style and mannerisms.
- Day 51: Bigg Boss asks the city people to make a huge stack of dominoes on the wooden floor. On the other hand, the villagers are asked to make cow dung cakes. Later Bigg Boss also interchanges the teams of Khali and Shweta.
- Day 52: Seema was asked to submit two names for next week's captains. Seema submitted Manoj and Khali's name.
- Day 53: Khali won a majority of votes, hence becoming the new captain of the house.
- Day 55: Hrishant was evicted from the house. Before exiting he nominated Shweta and Samir.
Week 9 (30th November to 6th December)
- Day 56: Dolly enters as a wild-card entry in Bigg Boss, packed in a locked wooden box placed in the garden, where the villagers are sleeping. Samir is called to the confession room and given the key to the box. When Samir open the box, Dolly pops out of the box, which is no shock for Samir and Shweta.
- Day 57: Bigg Boss gave a task known as Paathshaala, where Seema, Manoj and Ashmit act as teachers while rest of the housemates are students.[16]
Ratings, reception and viewership
According to data available with aMap, a television viewership monitoring agency, the opening episode of Bigg Boss 4 on Colors got a rating of 3.6. Season 3 had average rating of 2.43 while Bigg Boss 1 and Bigg Boss 2 had average ratings of 1.96 and 2.03. While Bigg Boss 1 was anchored by Arshad Warsi, Shilpa Shetty hosted Bigg Boss 2 and Amitabh Bachchan for Bigg Boss 3.[26]
This changed when the Sara-Ali wedding episode received a TRP of 4.4 and when Dolly-Shweta-Sameer fight took place and Pamela Anderson entered the house, the show received a TRP of 4.8, its highest TRP to date this season.[citation needed]
Controversies
During the first week of the show's airing, activists of Shiv Sena, a political party, started protesting against the inclusion of Pakistani housemates in the show.[27][28]
One of the contestants, Sakshi Pradhan felt that she may be pregnant and spoke about her concern to fellow housemates Shweta Tiwari, Veena Malik and Sara Khan. However the video of the conversation was not aired. After receiving permission from Bigg Boss, Sakshi was allowed to leave the house for a short time to see a doctor.[29]
After being evicted from the house, Rahul Bhatt claimed that Bigg Boss is scripted.[30]
In November 2010, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry served a stay order to Bigg Boss, due to complaints of indecent exposure aired on national television. The current time of 9 PM will be shifted to 11pm after 22 November 2010.[31][32]
