Tina Munim or Tina Ambani(born February 11, 1957) is an Indian film actress who has a successful Bollywood career during the late seventies and early eighties. She is married to Anil Ambani, now one of the richest men in the world. She is involved in a number of Philanthropic and charity activities and is currently running a NGO and an Hospital.

Early life and background

Munim was born in Mumbai in a well to do Gujarati-speaking family. They lived in Dhaka,Bangladesh.She belongs to the Svetambara sect of Jain religion. Her forefathers were royal merchants in the service of the Burmese kings under British rule.

Career

Munim was discovered by Dev Anand after she represented India at the International Teen Princess contest in Aruba, and won the Miss Photogenic and Miss Bikini awards. Tina aspired to become a Parisian trained couturier and was poised to travel there for her studies in design when approached with a cinematic offer.

In 1978, Dev Anand cast her in his film Des Pardes, which launched her film career. He would repeatedly cast her in several other films with him in the lead role , such as Lootmaar and Man Pasand.

Sunil Dutt launched his son Sanjay Dutt in his film debut Rocky. Tina was chosen as Sanjay's heroine.

Tina Munim fell in love with Rajesh Khanna, when they started giving hit films together like Fiffty Fiffty,Souten, Aakhir Kyun, Bewafai, Insaaf Main Karoonga and Adhikar.[1]Khanna formed popular onsreen and off screen pair with Tina in the eighties[2] but the relation ended when Tina decided to go to California for getting graduated.[3]In 1985 Rajesh Khanna turned into a film producer and cast Tina Munim as his female lead in the film critically acclaimed Alag Alag[4].In 1992, Ram Awatar Agnihotri wrote that it was in the films Alag Alag and Adhikar (1986), both opposite Rajesh Khanna that Tina Munim showed the "first sparks" of the dedicated actress she would become.Tina regards her performance in the film Adhikar (1986) as her best performance in her career.[5]

Apart from Dev Anand and Rajesh Khanna, she also made a popular screen team with actor Rishi Kapoor, since they were paired romantically in six films, the most popular being Subhash Ghai's Karz. Producer-Director-Actor Rakesh Roshan also cast her several times, including for the hit film "Aakhir Kyon?" and Aap Ke Deewane. Director Basu Chatterjee repeatedly cast her in his films, such as Baaton Baaton Mein and Man Pasand.

Tina's nephew Karan Shah tried to follow in her footsteps by starring in the teen love story "Jawani" (1984) opposite Neelam, but the film didn't become a hit, in spite of R.D. Burman's hit music, and Karan's film career fizzled.[6]

In the year 1987, Munim made the conscious decision to put her Bollywood career on hiatus. She moved to California and attended college.

Social Work

Tina Ambani is working on "Empowering Indian Senior Citizens" through her NGO HARMONY - For Silver Citizens and runs magazine called "Harmony". She is also promoting art and creativity and organizes yearly exhibits for artists, "The Harmony Show" and MUMBAI FILM FESTIVAL. She is also running a hospital called Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital & Research Institute in Mumbai. Along with KDA Nursing College.

HARMONY - For Silver Citizens

The Harmony Initiative, an initiative of the Dhirubhai Ambani Memorial Trust, led by Tina Ambani, was founded to improve the life of every elder person across income, class and region. Unwavering dedication and research led the way. Harmony also publishes a monthly magazine called "Harmony". Harmony also organises an annual award function called "Harmony-Award for Silver Citizens". Harmony also organises art shows every year displaying the work of various artists. Members from Harmony also participates in various events such as Mumbai Marathon.

Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital & Research Institute

Inaugurated in January 2009, the Hospital is a significant CSR Initiative from Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group managed by chairperson Tina Ambani .The 730 bed multi-speciality hospital underwent a 'soft' launch in early 2008 for employees and doctors that had accepted offers with KDAH, and became operational in the first week of 2009. It is designed to raise India's global standing as a healthcare destination, diagnostic facilities and research activities. A hospital in Mumbai to function with a FULL TIME SPECIALIST SYSTEM. The 750-bed hospital has over 103 full-time doctors, 520 nurses and about 200 paramedics .

Mumbai Film Festival

It is a film festival organised by Reliance BIG Entertainment every year.The film festival is an international platform to showcase talents, to stand up and be counted in the exciting wave of global cinema.In 2010 it had over 200 films from 56 countries that were screened at different venues. And there are several sidebar events where filmmakers and cineastes got an opportunity to interact with each other.

Personal life

She was romantically involved with Rajesh Khanna in the period 1981-87 and had an affair with Sanjay Dutt in the year 1980. But later she married Anil Ambani, with whom she has two sons, Anmol and Anshul. Today she is involved in a number of charity, arts, and talent endeavors and hasn't made any new films since 1991.[7]
