The Guild of Copy Editors – May 2011 Backlog Elimination Drive

The Guild of Copy Editors invite you to participate in the May 2011 Backlog Elimination Drive, a month-long effort to reduce the backlog of articles that require copy-editing. The drive began on May 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and will end on May 31 at 23:59 (UTC). The goals of this backlog elimination drive are to eliminate as many articles as possible from the 2009 backlog and to reduce the overall backlog by 15%. ! NEW ! In an effort to encourage the final elimination of all 2009 articles, we will be tracking them on the leaderboard for this drive.

Awards and barnstars
A range of barnstars will be awarded to active participants. Some are exclusive to GOCE drives. More information on awards can be found on the main drive page.

We look forward to meeting you on the drive! Your GOCE coordinators: SMasters, Diannaa, Tea with toast, Chaosdruid, and Torchiest

Hello Wikifiers!

Sorry this Newsletter is late, It should have gone out a month ago. I've been very busy in real life and didn't have time to get over to the newsletter. In this edition of the Newsletter, we have an editorial written by our new executive coordinator; Guoguo12. Guoguo12 has succeeded Mono due to an indefinite wikibreak. We also have the results of the February and March Mini drives.

Happy Wikifying,

Need a WikiMentor

Hi Marek69, I'm a newbie in Wikipedia editing. Well, not exactly a newbie because 2 years ago I was active in fighting vandalism. After 2 years of vacant, I'm coming back with the main missions to help with Wiki-translations and images (since I'm a traveler). I read many of the Wiki guidelines already, but there are tremendous amount of reading and sometimes I'm hoping to find a quicker answer. I remember that you were helpful to me as a newbie 2 years ago, and wondering could you help me out this time too. Or if you could tell me who I should ask for help, that will be superb. Lastly, I would like to apologize if this is not even the right section to talk to you :) VagabondQuest (talk) 15:26, 16 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

And oh, when you reply, could you please do it in my talk page? VagabondQuest (talk) 17:02, 16 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Replied on talk page as requested. -- Marek.69 talk

Hello, as I noted on your talk page, this edit to Mainland High School is clearly vandalism. If you are unsure of what is considered to be vandalism on Wikipedia, I suggest you read the article Wikipedia:Vandalism
Thanks Marek.69 talk

Customary Aboriginal law

Dear Marek: I have proposed for deletion an article to which you contributed as "Challenge me" - Customary Aboriginal law. While I am sure you meant well, I think that at present the article is unfortunate. Wikiain (talk) 23:57, 20 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Wikiain,
I'm not quite sure what you are refering to. I've looked at the articles edit history and cannot see that I have edited on this article at all.
Kind Regards Marek.69 talk 00:06, 21 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
My humble apologies - I had misread your welcome to "Challenge me". Very best wishes Wikiain (talk) 00:20, 21 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I understand now, Wikiain. No problem. Happy wiki-ing to you :-) Marek.69 talk 00:23, 21 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Not fair

Why are you in control of the Nevin page and not me? How do I make my own page where I am the admin then? I thought wiki was meant to keep all edits? —Preceding unsigned comment added by DogDuckGoose (talkcontribs) 23:59, 22 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Wikipedia pages do not belong to any one person.
The edits you have made to the Pat Nevin are considered to be vandalism. If you are unsure of what is considered to be vandalism on Wikipedia, I suggest you read the article Wikipedia:Vandalism.
Thank you Marek.69 talk 00:06, 23 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Well how can you tell what edits have been made so quickly? Are people just sitting there looking for changes to each and any page? Why do you get to delete what I write? Why cant I delete the whole page then? —Preceding unsigned comment added by DogDuckGoose (talkcontribs) 00:35, 23 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Tom Kahn and AFL-CIO aid of Solidarity

Hi Marek! Would you look at the DYK nomination for SDUSA? Somebody has raised a blocking objection, wanting a removal of the biographical material in the article, which would make it impossible to use the DYK. Thanks,  Kiefer.Wolfowitz 11:40, 3 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

MadHaTTer666, it looks like spam links to me (to two other editors, also)
In addition you should look at Wikipedia is not a manual, i.e I read this as 'Wikipedia should not be a manual for hacking'. There are plenty of other sites on the net which do this.

Facts about Pope

Hi there! Please do not erase information about Ukrainian side of Pope's family. It is importan for Ukrainians and his significant visit to Ukraine in 2001. Thanks! --SeikoEn (talk) 06:23, 7 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi SeikoEn, thank you for your message
I do not consider that I was erasing information, merely restoring to a reliably sourced version.
The original line read:
Karol Józef Wojtyła (Anglicised: Charles Joseph Wojtyla) was born in the Polish town of Wadowice[1] and was the youngest of three children of Karol Wojtyła, an ethnic Pole,[2] and Emilia Kaczorowska, who was of Lithuanian and Polish ancestry.[1][2] His mother died on 13 April 1929,[3] when he was eight years old.[4]

which you changed with this edit to read:
Karol Józef Wojtyła (Anglicised: Charles Joseph Wojtyla) was born in the Polish town of Wadowice[1] and was the youngest of three children of Karol Wojtyła, an ethnic Pole,[2] and Emilia Kaczorowska, who was an ethnic Ukrainian.[5] Pope John Paul II had relatives on his mother’s side of the family who were Ukrainian Catholics of the Byzantine Rite.[6]

The CNN biography reference[2] clearly states, in the opening paragraph,
"He was born in 1920, the second son of Karol Wojtyla (pronounced voy-TIH-wah) Sr., a retired army officer and tailor, and Emilia Kaczorowska Wojtyla, a schoolteacher of Lithuanian descent."[2]

Your changes, as well as replacing the information about his mother' ethnicity, also removed the [referenced] line:
His mother died on 13 April 1929,[3] when he was eight years old.[4]

The edit also broke some references in the process, which AnomieBOT rescued with this edit
My reversion of both of these edits, back to the original, was based on my opinion that the CNN biography was most probably a Reliable Source.
On checking your reference , which was not directly sourced, my thoughts were it was at best speculative.
Kind Regards, -- Marek.69 talk 15:40, 7 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

OK, thank you for your understanding. Best regards!--SeikoEn (talk) 18:03, 7 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

British Library follow-up

Thank you for participating in the English and Drama Editathon at the British Library on June 4. I hope you enjoyed the day and got something useful out of it.

If you are new to Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects, I hope you had any questions or problems answered and maybe found being a contributor as addictive as many of the regulars do. If you've got any questions or need help, please feel free to ask any of us on our talk page or by e-mail (, Tom Morris, Sadads, James F., RHaworth, The Land, AdamBMorgan), ask on the British Library collaboration page or through the Wikipedia Help Desk.

If you are interested in working on Wikipedia, you might want to consider joining one of the WikiProjects. These are places where team work between editors interested in a particular topic can be coordinated. Some suggestions for WikiProjects that may be of interest to you as a participant in the event on Saturday include Literature, Poetry or Science Fiction. A full list of literature and language related WikiProjects can be found here, and a list of all WikiProjects is here. The WikiProjects often have things that need doing, and if you need help you can often ask in their talk page.

But there are other places you can get involved. If you are interested on working on images, such as improving image descriptions, categorisation or uploading new media, consider getting involved in Wikimedia Commons. Wikisource also needs people willing to help make available original source material, and Wikiquote is trying to compile a directory of quotes which you may be able to contribute to.

If you want to continue some of the work we got started on Saturday, here are a few potential things to help with:

  • Following on from work on Ella D'Arcy on Saturday, work has started to make all of The Yellow Book available on Wikisource. If you go to the page on Wikisource and pick a volume then click on 'scan index' you can start helping to proofread pages from the journal - simply click on the page you want to work on, and go through to check that the text on the left reflects the text on the right. If you need any help with getting started, please ask User:Tom Morris.
  • If you created any new articles at the event, you might want to submit them to Did you know?.
  • If you are able to translate into other languages, why not pick one of the articles we worked on, translate it and post it on another language version of Wikipedia: there are now versions in hundreds of languages. On Wikimedia Commons, it is also possible to provide multilingual descriptions of images and categories: this enables editors on the other language versions to better find images and media files they can use in their project.
  • If you need images from the British Library to illustrate articles, please add them to the image requests page. If you would like a British LIbrary curator to help collaborate on an article, please add it to the collaborations page.
  • You might also be interested in attending GLAMcamp London.
  • To explore more articles related to the British Library, visit Portal:British Library.

Whatever you do, please tell us about the positive and negative experiences you have. On behalf of the organisers of the event, thanks again.

Not a misspelling

[1] Please note that correct spelling of Torvalds is without any diacritics. Actually, a Google search returns zero results for 'Tõrvalds'. Would you care to identify if this correction was automatically suggested by the AWB or did you make it yourself? --hydrox (talk) 04:53, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Hydrox, sorry my mistake. The AWB run was correcting city/town names which obviously does not apply to Linus Torvalds, software engineer. I wasn't paying enough attention. Thanks for spotting and correcting it.
Kind Regards -- Marek.69 talk 23:12, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. I have never used this software, as it is not available for non-MS systems. But by uneducated guess, this seems to be a bug with the system: Tõrvalds does not exist as a word in any language written on the Internet in 2011 – not even as a town name. --hydrox (talk) 22:10, 21 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Hydrox, I think the problem is with my settings. I was running a couple of extra scripts at the time. I think it was trying to correct the 'Torva' part of the word to Tõrva, a town in Southern Estonia. Most likely my settings, rather than a bug in AWB. I thank you for bring this to my attention. Best Regards -- Marek.69 talk 01:03, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, thanks. --hydrox (talk) 14:41, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Işık University

Dear Marek,

Thank you for your message. However, I do not understand why you accused me of vandalism. There are two universities with the same name. Hence, to avoid confusion, I created a disambiguation page, and made two entries clearly identifying the universities by their geographic location.

I apologise for any inconvenience.

David.meddleton (talk) 02:23, 19 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi David. Sorry, I didn't really 'accuse' you of anything.
I reverted your edit on Işık University, because at first glance it looked like an 'unexplained removal of content'. As I was using huggle, you were also messaged.
I changed my mind about 30 seconds later and reversed both of my edits.[2] & [3]
I then placed a welcome message on your talk page a minute later.
I am also sorry for any misunderstanding or inconvenience.
Kind Regards -- Marek.69 talk 15:23, 20 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, thank you for your message Marek. I appreciated it!. David.meddleton (talk) 16:25, 20 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

CastelBrando

Ciao! Thanks for the collaboration and sorry if my edits looked a bit blunt. The article was rather good but had some faults in POV, weasel word etc. I also removed your "personalized" format of the gallery (which I anyway I think it'd stay better at Commons) as I found it a bit so-so. :) As for imperial units, I also abhorr them (why only TWO countries in the world are still unable to learn the more intelligent metric ones?), but it's OK if you want to restore them. I think our collaboration was a perfect example of how a good Wikipedia article can finally stem up from side-to-side collaboration and soft-minded goodwill. Ciao and good work... --'''Attilios''' (talk) 20:36, 27 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
