Adventure Time is an American animated television series created by Pendleton Ward for Cartoon Network. The series follows the adventures of Finn (voiced by Jeremy Shada), a human boy, and his best friend and adoptive brother Jake (voiced by John DiMaggio), a dog with magical powers to change shape and grow and shrink at will. Finn and Jake live in the post-apocalyptic Land of Ooo. Along the way, they interact with the other main characters of the show: Princess Bubblegum (voiced by Hynden Walch), the Ice King (voiced by Tom Kenny), and Marceline the Vampire Queen (voiced by Olivia Olson).[1][2]
The show originally began in 2008 with a pilot for Random! Cartoons on Nicktoons Network. The pilot quickly became a cult hit on YouTube when it was continually removed and then re-added by different sources.[3] It launched as its own series on April 5, 2010, on Cartoon Network. The show is currently on its fifth season. At least 143 episodes have been ordered, 140 of which have aired. Episodes are 11 minutes long. The first four seasons comprised 26 episodes; however, the fifth season will have 52 episodes. Adventure Time is produced by Cartoon Network Studios and Frederator Studios. The series is rated TV-PG.[4] Several compilation DVDs have been released. In addition, both the first and second seasons have been released on DVD and Blu-ray, and a season three DVD is expected to be released in the future.[5]
Ever since its debut, Adventure Time has been a ratings success for Cartoon Network. As of March 2012, the show is viewed by approximately 2 to 3 million viewers per week.[6] The show has received positive reviews from critics and has developed a strong following among teenagers and adults, many of whom are attracted due to the series' animation, stories, and characters.[7] Adventure Time has also been nominated for eight Annie Awards,[8][9][10][11][12] five Primetime Emmy Awards,[13] two Critics' Choice Television Awards,[14][15] and a Sundance Film Festival Award[16] among other awards. In 2013, the series won a Motion Picture Sound Editors Award for the episode "Card Wars", and former character designer Andy Ristaino won an Emmy for "Outstanding Individual Achievement In Animation" for his character designs in the episode "Puhoy".[17][18]
Series overview
Each Adventure Time episode is about eleven minutes in length; pairs of episodes are often telecast in order to fill a half-hour program time slot.[19] The series has completed four seasons of twenty-six episodes each, and is currently on its fifth. The series previewed on March 11, 2010, and the first season officially premiered on April 5, 2010.[20] The season concluded on September 27 of the same year.[21] The second season premiered several weeks later, on October 11.[22] It concluded on May 2, 2011.[23] The third season premiered on July 11, 2011, and concluded on February 13, 2012.[24][25] Its fourth season ran from April 2, 2012, through October 22, 2012.[26][27] The show is currently on its fifth season, which started airing on November 12, 2012.[28] On January 28, 2013, it was officially announced that the show had been renewed for a sixth season.[29]

Season 6 (TBA)
On January 28, 2013, it was officially announced by Cartoon Network that Adventure Time had been renewed for a sixth season.[29] Storyboard artist Jesse Moynihan revealed on July 2, 2013 that production for the sixth season began in mid-July.[37] Storyboard artists for the season will include Tom Herpich, Steve Wolfhard, Andy Ristaino, Cole Sanchez, Seo Kim, Somvilay Xayaphone, and Moynihan; Kent Osborne, Pendleton Ward, and Adam Muto will also contribute to storyboards sporadically. Various other freelance artists, such as Derek Ballard,[166] will also work on the season with Moynihan, and he is prepping to do an episode entirely by himself.[167]
