JJ Project (Korean: 제이제이 프로젝트) is a South Korean duo signed under JYP Entertainment that debuted in 2012. The duo consists of JB and Jr.. They released their debut single "Bounce" on May 22, 2012.

Career History

Pre-debut

In 2009, JB and Jr. individually auditioned for JYP Entertainment. With their exceptional dance skills and good looks, they tied the 5th Open auditions as the overall winners and later became trainees under JYP Entertainment. During their trainees days, JB and Jr. appeared in San E's "Tasty San" music video.

In 2012, both of them got a role on the KBS drama Dream High 2, the sequel to the 2011 hit drama Dream High. On February 3, it was announced that JB and Jr. would debut officially as a boy band sometime during the second half of 2012.[1]

2012: Debut with Bounce and JYP Nation concert

On May 8, JYP Entertainment launched a new website for the “JJ Project” along with an official Facebook Page and YouTube Channel. A teaser video called "JJ Project Slot Machine" was also released. Although no official statement has been made, many people assume that JJ stands for JB and Jr.[2] It was later revealed that JJ Project is indeed composed of JB and Jr.[3][4] On May 9, another video teaser entitled, "JYP 007" was uploaded through JJ Project's official YouTube account. It shows J.Y. Park as he opens a briefcase that he had placed on the table, revealing an envelope titled "JYP New Project'. J.Y Park then opens the envelope revealing an iPad, showing a new project group that he was working on.[5] On May 13, JYP Entertainment released another teaser video entitled, "Time 2 JJ". The teaser didn't show the faces of either of the members from the duo but showed the duo's wardrobe choices.[6]

On May 14, the album cover and full track listing of their debut album "Bounce" was revealed and the album was set to release on May 20, 2012.[7] Teaser photos for JJ Project was revealed on May 15 through JYP Entertainment's official Twitter account.[8]

On May 17, 2012, JYP Entertainment released a final teaser,[9] and on May 19, the official music video for title track "Bounce" was released through their official YouTube account.[10] The following day, their MV ranked #10 on iTunes's "Top Dance Album"[11]

The music video of Bounce gained an explosive attention online since its release and reached #4 Most Liked, #10 Most Viewed, #7 Most Discussed, and #4 Most Favorited video worldwide on YouTube. In South Korea, it ranked #1 on all four charts.[12] Their MV also reached over 1 million views in YouTube in just 2 days.[13] The duo started their promotions for "Bounce" on May 24, 2012 on Mnet's M! Countdown.[14]

On June 26, the duo was invited to record their own rendition of NaNaNa by Yoo Seung Jun to be performed on the second season of MBC's music program MM CHOICE.[15]

The duo participated at the 2012 JYP Nation in Korea on August 4 with the rest of JYP Entertainment artists. [16][17] They also participated at the JYP Nation in Japan 2012 held at Yoyogi Stadium.[18]

On August 27, it was announced that the duo would be the opening act of their senior group Wonder Girls upcoming first Asia Tour.[19]

2013 : When a Man Falls in Love

On March 11, 2013, it was announced that JB would be appearing as Seo Mi Joon on MBC's new drama When a Man Falls in Love.[20] A few days later, it was revealed that Jr. would join the cast and will be playing the role of Ddol Yi, a part-time worker at Han Tae Sang (Song Seung Hun‘s character)’s mother’s store.[21]

2014 : Debut as GOT7

On January 1, 2014, it was announced that the two sole members of JJ Project would debut as part of a 7-member boy band called GOT7. Their debut song is expected to be released on January 15, 2014.

Endorsements

JJ Project's first endorsement was for LG's teen cosmetic line, nana's B.[23] On July 2, 2012 the duo signed an exclusive endorsement contract for clothing brand, TBJ.[24] On November of the same year, the duo together with Wonder Girls' Sohee have been selected as models for Reebok‘s GL 6000 series.[25]
