Coco is an upcoming American computer-animated film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. On August 15, 2015, Pixar confirmed the title of their latest film inspired by the Mexican holiday Dia de Los Muertos at D23. It was also confirmed that the film will be directed by Lee Unkrich (Toy Story 3). It will be released on November 22, 2017.[1]

Premise

Coco will be about a Mexican boy Miguel who is "a spirited 12 year-old growing up with a big family in rural Mexico." Miguel will discover a generational mystery revolving around Dia de Muertos that will "forever [change] his fate."[2]

Development

The Pixar team has made several trips to Mexico to help define the characters and story of Coco. Director Lee Unkrich said, 'I’d seen it portrayed in folk art. It was something about the juxtaposition of skeletons with bright, festive colors that captured my imagination. It has led me down a winding path of discovery. And the more I learn about Día De Los Muertos, the more it affects me deeply.'[3]
