The Deep Space Gateway (DSG) is a crew-tended cislunar space station planned by NASA[1] and Roscosmos[2] for construction in the 2020s. The station would be used as a staging point for the proposed Deep Space Transport.[1][3] It is also being considered by international partners for use as a staging ground for robotic and crewed lunar surface missions.

Overview

Like the Russian proposed Lunar Orbital Station, The Deep Space Gateway will be initially placed in a Near-Rectilinear Halo Orbit (NRHO) around the Moon.[4] Its various components are to be launched on the Space Launch System as Orion co-manifested payloads on the flights EM-2 through 8.[4] The DSG is likely to incorporate components developed under NextSTEP-2.[3]

The Power and Propulsion Bus for the DSG will have a mass of 8-9 t and be capable of generating 40 kW of solar electric power. 12 kW ion thrusters will provide maneuverability which can be supported by chemical propulsion.[5]

Components

The Deep Space Gateway is planned to include at least the following component modules:

  • The Gateway Power/Propulsion Module will be used to generate electricity around the space station. It will be sent during Exploration Mission 2.[5]
  • The Cislunar Habitation Module will be used for long duration habitation onboard the space station. It will be sent during Exploration Mission 3.[5]
  • The Gateway Logistics Module will be used for experiments and logistics onboard the space station. The equipment includes a robotic arm, which will be built by the Canadian Space Agency.[6] It will be sent during Exploration Mission 4.[5]
  • The Gateway Airlock Module will be used for performing EVA onboard the space station. It will be sent during Exploration Mission 5.[5]
