Rebecca Quin[7] (born 30 January 1987) is an Irish professional wrestler. She is currently signed to WWE under the ring name Becky Lynch, where she performs on the SmackDown brand.
Quin began training as a professional wrestler in June 2002. Initially working in Ireland and occasionally teaming with her brother using the ring name Rebecca Knox, she soon expanded her career into the rest of Europe and North America on the independent circuit, wrestling regularly for promotions in France, England, Germany, Canada and the United States. She most notably competed in Elite Canadian Championship Wrestling and became the first wrestler to win the SuperGirls Championship in June 2005.
In September 2006, Quin suffered a severe head injury during a match in Germany which kept her several years away from professional wrestling. She returned to wrestling full-time in late 2012 and signed a contract with WWE in 2013, initially reporting to the developmental territory NXT. Following her arrival on WWE's main roster in July 2015, she became the inaugural SmackDown Women's Champion at Backlash 2016 and since held the title twice as of December 2018.
Early life
Quin was born in Limerick, Ireland and grew up in Dublin.[8][9] Her parents separated when she was one.[10] She was a fan of professional wrestling as a child, her godfather Brian McMahon bought her a bullworker and used to train with it with her brother,[4][6], Richy,[11] who has also wrestled under the ring name Gonzo de Mondo.[6] She was involved in horse riding, swimming, and basketball.[6] However, she claimed to have failed P.E. in school.[12]
Quin attended university to study philosophy, history and politics, but said she "really hated it" and dropped out.[6][13] She planned to return to college to study health and exercise studies.[13] Prior to beginning to train as a wrestler, she stated that she had been "going down a bad path" involving alcohol, but wrestling helped her give it up.[6]
Professional wrestling career
Training and early career (2002–2005)
As a teenager, Quin heard that Fergal Devitt[a] and Paul Tracey were opening a wrestling school in Ireland.[4][6] She began training there along with her brother in June 2002.[4] She made her professional wrestling debut five months later, using the ring name Rebecca Knox.[6] She teamed with her brother in mixed tag team matches during the early part of her career.[6] She also trained at British professional wrestling promotion NWA UK Hammerlock.[5]
Independent circuit (2005–2006)
In 2005, Knox joined the Canadian promotion SuperGirls Wrestling, an all-female offshoot of Extreme Canadian Championship Wrestling (ECCW), first appearing on ECCW shows, where she immediately began feuding with Miss Chevius, defeating her in Surrey, British Columbia on 17 May, before losing to her in Port Coquitlam a month later on 17 June.[14][15] The following night, Knox teamed with Calum Macbeth to defeat Miss Chevius and Tony Tisoy in a mixed tag team match in Vancouver.[15] On 24 June, Knox defeated Miss Chevius at an ECCW show in Surrey, British Columbia to become the inaugural SuperGirls Champion.[16][17] Knox successfully defended the championship against LuFisto on 23 September at the inaugural SuperGirls DVD tapings, when she hit LuFisto with the championship belt and her manager Scotty Mac powerbombed LuFisto through a table.[18][19] She also successfully defended the championship twice the following night, first against Cheerleader Melissa, after Mac superkicked Melissa, and then against Madison after illegally using the ring ropes for leverage during the pin.[15][19]
On 7 August 2005, Knox appeared at a Fighting Spirit Federation (FSF) show in Froberville, where she competed in a four-way match for the World Queens of Chaos Championship against the champion Nikita, as well as Jersey and Sweet Saraya.[20]
In October, Knox participated in All Pro Wrestling (APW)'s third ChickFight tournament in Hayward, California; she defeated Morgan in the first round on 28 October, but lost to eventual winner Mariko Yoshida in the second round later that night.[21]
In November, Knox completed a two-week tour of Japan. During this tour on 9 November, Knox won an eighteen-person battle royal in Korakuen Hall in Tokyo.[13] She later singled out this tour as the highlight of her career.[13]
At ECCW's tenth anniversary show in January 2006, she defeated El Phantasmo in an intergender match.[22] Knox held the SuperGirls Championship for ten months and two days, before eventually losing it to Lisa Moretti on 21 April 2006.[16][23]
Knox began working for the all-female promotion Shimmer Women Athletes in 2006; in her debut match for the promotion at the DVD tapings of Volume 3, she defeated Allison Danger on 12 February, and established herself as a heel (villain) by faking an injury, while in the main event of the Volume 4 DVD tapings later that night, she lost to Daizee Haze, provoking a feud between the two women.[24] At the Volume 5 tapings on 21 May, she attacked Haze with a release German suplex and later that evening defeated her in a two-out-of-three falls match.[25][26] The match lasted 29 minutes and was later described by promoter Dave Prazak as "probably the best women's match [that he'd] seen on U.S. soil in years, if not ever".[27] In a repeat of her debut match for the promotion, Knox defeated Danger in a Pure Wrestling Rules match at the tapings for Shimmer Volume 6.[25]
On 4 June 2006, Knox defeated Saraya to win the vacated World Queens of Chaos Championship at a FSF show in Chouilly.[28] She held the championship before dropping it to Saraya at a World Association of Wrestling (WAW) show in Great Yarmouth on 23 September.[29]
Injury and career hiatus (2006–2012)
In September 2006, while wrestling in Germany, Knox sustained a legit head injury, following which she claimed to have been "suffering from extremely painful headaches, loud buzzing in her left ear and vision as a result," and was also diagnosed with possible damage to her eighth cranial nerve.[30] A 60-minute Iron Woman match against Haze at Shimmer's Volume 7 taping was cancelled as a result.[31]
She made her in-ring return at a NWA Ireland event in February 2008.[32] Knox was booked for a Shimmer Women Athletes event on 26 April but no-showed, stating that she did not believe that wrestling was the correct career choice for her at that time.[33]
Knox then returned to in-ring competition in October 2012 after an absence of over four years, making two appearances for Irish promotion Fight Factory Pro Wrestling before signing with WWE in early 2013.[34]
WWE
NXT (2013–2015)
In April 2013, having wrestled only three matches since September 2006, Quin signed a two-year developmental deal with WWE and moved to Florida to report to their developmental territory NXT.[35] On 29 August, her new ring name was revealed as Becky Lynch.[36]
Becky Lynch made her televised in-ring debut on the 26 June 2014 episode of NXT, defeating Summer Rae.[37] The next week, Lynch teamed up with Bayley in a losing effort to the BFFs: Beautiful Fierce Females (NXT Women's Champion Charlotte and Sasha Banks) in a tag team match.[38] Lynch spent the next few months competing in non-title matches against Charlotte, losing three in a row.[39][40][41] On the 23 October episode of NXT, after being told to make herself relevant, Lynch aligned herself with Sasha Banks by attacking Bayley, turning heel.[42] Known as Team B.A.E. (Best at Everything), the alliance started to disintegrate when Sasha cost Lynch a match against Bayley in February 2015.[2][43]
At NXT TakeOver: Rival, Lynch participated in a fatal four-way match for the NXT Women's Championship, which was won by Sasha Banks.[44] On the April 22 episode of NXT, Lynch defeated Bayley and Charlotte in a triple threat match to earn a title match against Sasha,[45] which she lost at NXT TakeOver: Unstoppable. During the match, she debuted a new look resembling Magic: The Gathering character Chandra Nalaar.[46][47] The match received widespread critical acclaim, with praise going to both performers.[48][49]
Diva's Revolution (2015–2016)
Lynch made her official main roster debut the on the 13 July episode of Raw, as a fan favorite, along with Charlotte and Sasha Banks, after Stephanie McMahon called for a "revolution" in the WWE Divas division. Lynch and Charlotte began allying with Paige, who was feuding with Team Bella (Alicia Fox and The Bella Twins), while Banks allied with Naomi and Tamina, leading to a brawl between the three teams.[50] The trio of Paige, Lynch and Charlotte, originally dubbed Submission Sorority, was renamed to Team PCB (after the initials of each wrestler) when it was found out the original name was the same as an adult web page.[51] Lynch made her in-ring debut on the 20 July episode of Raw, teaming with Paige in a losing effort against Sasha Banks and Naomi.[52][53] She earned her first singles victory on the 28 July episode of Main Event over Brie Bella.[54] The three teams ultimately faced off at SummerSlam on 23 August in a three-team elimination match, in which Lynch pinned Brie Bella to win the match for PCB.[55]
On the 31 August episode of Raw, all members of PCB competed in the first ever "Divas Beat the Clock challenge", to determine the number one contender for the Divas Championship.[56] Charlotte won the match and went on to claim the title from Nikki Bella at Night of Champions on 20 September.[57] The following night on Raw, Paige turned on her partners during Charlotte's celebration, claiming that Charlotte was only there because of her father Ric Flair (since he was a former wrestler in WWE) and called Lynch the "least relevant" member of the group.[58] Throughout October, Paige tried to reconcile with Lynch and Charlotte[59][60] only to attack them, officially disbanding Team PCB in the process.[61] On the 2 November episode of Raw, Lynch was pinned by Paige in a fatal four-way to earn a title match for Charlotte's Divas Championship.[62] The following week on Raw, Lynch gained revenge by defeating Paige.[63]
"Lynch is the one who was the key to the initially failing "Divas Revolution" turning around. Her program with Charlotte may have been the best booked on the main roster. And it worked".
Dave Meltzer in February 2016[64]
On the 30 November episode of Raw, Charlotte started displaying heel traits after she feigned a leg injury to defeat Lynch, followed by a distraction provided by her father.[65] Throughout December, the two's friendship continued to strain[66][67][68][69][70] and after Lynch defeated her on the 4 January 2016 episode of Raw, Charlotte attacked her and solidified her villainous turn.[71] Lynch faced Charlotte for the Divas Championship three days later on SmackDown[72] and at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view event on 24 January, but lost both matches after interference from Ric Flair.[73]
In February, Lynch joined Sasha Banks in her feud with former team mates Naomi and Tamina.[74][75][76][77] Lynch and Sasha defeated Naomi and Tamina at Fastlane.[78] The following night on Raw, a number one contender's match between Lynch and Sasha, with the winner facing Charlotte for the championship at WrestleMania 32,[79] ended in a double pin.[80] A rematch on the following SmackDown ended in a no contest when Charlotte attacked both contestants.[81] As a result, Charlotte was scheduled to defend her title in a triple threat against both wrestlers at WrestleMania.[82] At the event, Lynch was unsuccessful in capturing the newly-created WWE Women's Championship (which replaced the Diva's Championship).[83][84][85] At Money in the Bank in June, Lynch teamed up with Natalya to face Dana Brooke and Charlotte in a losing effort. After their match, Natalya turned on Lynch and attacked her.[86] The two began feuding for a month[87][88][89] until Lynch lost to Natalya at Battleground.[90]
SmackDown Women's Champion (2016–2018)
After being the first woman drafted to the SmackDown brand during the 2016 WWE draft,[91][92] Lynch defeated Natalya in her first match as part of the brand.[93][94] At SummerSlam, Lynch teamed with Carmella and Naomi in a six–woman tag team match in a losing effort against Alexa Bliss, Natalya and the returning Nikki Bella.[95]
On 11 September, at Backlash, Lynch won a six–pack elimination challenge, last eliminating Carmella, to become the inaugural SmackDown Women's Champion.[96] Her first title defence against Alexa Bliss was scheduled for No Mercy but due to a legit out–of–ring injury the match was postponed .[97] to the 8 November episode of SmackDown; Lynch successfully defended the title by submission.[98] At the Survivor Series event, Lynch was the last woman from Team SmackDown to be eliminated during the 5-0n-5 Survivor Series elimination match against Team Raw.[99]
On 11 December, at the TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs pay-per-view, Lynch lost the championship to Alexa Bliss in a tables match, ending her reign at 84 days.[100] On the 20 December episode of SmackDown, Lynch then masked herself as La Luchadora and defeated Alexa in a non-title match.[101] She received her championship rematch on the 17 January 2017 episode of SmackDown, in a steel cage match but lost after interference from another La Luchadora (later revealed as the returning Mickie James).[102] On the 21 February episode of Smackdown, Lynch again failed to capture the championship.[103] Lynch participated in a six–pack challenge for the title at WrestleMania 33 in April, which was ultimately won by Naomi.[104]
In May, Lynch aligned with Naomi and Charlotte Flair[b] against "The Welcoming Committee" (Natalya, Carmella and Tamina).[106][107][108][109] The two teams faced off in a six–woman tag team match at Backlash; the Welcoming Committee was victorious when Lynch submitted to Natalya's sharpshooter.[110][111] Shortly after, Lynch competed at Money in the Bank, as part of the first women's money in the bank ladder match, which was won by Carmella.[112][113] In October, Lynch won a fatal five–way match against Flair, Naomi, Tamina and Carmella to become the Team SmackDown's captain for Survivor Series.[114][115] At the event, Lynch was the first competitor eliminated and her team was on the losing side.[116] Throughout the rest of the year, Lynch again aligned with Flair and Naomi to feud with the debuting Riott Squad (Ruby Riott, Liv Morgan and Sarah Logan).[117][118][119][120][121] In January 2018, at the Royal Rumble, Lynch participated in the first women's Royal Rumble match, entering at number 2 and lasting over 30 minutes before being eliminated by Ruby Riott.[122] A few months later, Lynch also participated in the WrestleMania Women's Battle Royal at WrestleMania 34, but was eliminated from the match by old rival Mickie James.[123] In May, she qualified for the women's Money in the Bank ladder match,[124] which was ultimately won by Alexa Bliss.[125]
The Man (2018–present)
Following the Money in the Bank event, Lynch began a winning streak, defeating different competitors such as Billie Kay,[126] Sonya Deville,[127] Peyton Royce,[128] Mandy Rose,[129] and Smackdown Women's Champion Carmella in a non–title match.[130] Her wins earned Lynch a title match, at SummerSlam but later, Flair was added to the match after defeating Carmella in a non–title match as well[131][132] and went on to win the title by pinning Lynch. After the match, Lynch attacked Flair, turning heel for the first time in the main roster.[133] Two days later on SmackDown Lynch berated the crowd, claiming that they weren't really supporting her the whole time, and claimed that she was being denied opportunities which were always handed to Flair.[134][135] Despite this, audiences increasingly supported Lynch, leading WWE to tweak the storyline and portray both Lynch and Flair as both having valid points, but neither being outright heels.[136] The feud between the two led to a title match at Hell In A Cell,[137][138][139] in which Lynch won the SmackDown Women's Championship for a second time.[140][141][142] In October, Lynch retained her title against Flair in two different matches both at WWE Super Show-Down[143][144] and on an episode of SmackDown by disqualification loss and a double count–out, respectively.[145] As a result, a last woman standing match between the two was scheduled for WWE Evolution, where Lynch emerged victorious after powerbombing Flair from the top turnbuckle through a table.[146][147] Around this time, Lynch started using the nickname "The Man", claiming to be the top wrestler of the company.[148][149][150]
As part of a competition between the Raw and Smackdown brands at Survivor Series, Lynch was scheduled for an interbrand champion vs. champion match against Raw Women's Champion Ronda Rousey.[151][152] Lynch led an invasion on the 12 November episode of Raw; during that angle, she suffered a legit concussion and broken nose following a stiff punch from Nia Jax.[153] Due to the injury, Lynch was pulled from the Survivor Series match and named Flair as her replacement on the following night's episode of SmackDown.[154][155] After her return, Lynch defended her title in a Tables, Ladders and Chairs match against both Flair and Asuka at the TLC pay-per-view,[156][157][158][159] where Asuka won the title after Rousey interfered and pushed both Lynch and Flair off a ladder, ending her reign at 91 days.[160]
