Australia–Croatia relations are foreign relations between Australia and Croatia. Australia does have an embassy in Zagreb while Croatia has its counterpart in Canberra.

History

Australia and Croatia first established relations when Croatia announced independence from Yugoslavia in 1992.[1] The two countries since then have largely enjoyed friendly relations, as Australia opened its consulate in Zagreb the same year. In 1999, the Australian consulate was upgraded as an embassy.[1]

People's movement

Croats first appeared in Australia in 1850s, when Croatia was part of the Austrian Empire. They were either known as Austrians or Italians at the time and, after the World War I to the Yugoslav Wars, were known as Yugoslavs. Croatian migrants came with diverse backgrounds, from intellectuals, communists, fascists, refugees and anti-communists, and they only became officially recognized as Croats in 1992.[2][3]

Croats in Australia have largely been successfully integrated into the mainstream Australian society, due to common culture and customs.[4] However, Croats also faced, in several cases, discrimination and troubles with the Australian authorities, notably in 1960s and 1970s.[5]

Economic relations

Australia's merchandise trade with Croatia in 2018 was $41.1 million, up 3.9% from 2017. Australian goods exports to Croatia totalled $2.8 million in 2018, with fruit and nuts, and specialised machinery and parts as the major sectors.[1]

Since joining the European Union in 2013, economic relations between Croatia and Australia have boomed. The free trade agreement between the European Union and Australia, signed in 2019, was seen positively in Croatia.[6]
