"2 Hours Doing Nothing" (Indonesian: 2 Jam Nggak Ngapa-ngapain) is a viral two-hour video created by YouTuber Muhammad Didit, uploaded on his YouTube channel "Sobat Miskin Official" ('Official Poor Gang')[FN 1] on 10 July 2020. The video features Didit staring at the camera in his bedroom for two hours. Although it was meant to be a 10-minute video, it unintentionally became longer. The video went viral and currently is nearing four million views.

Summary and production

The 2-hour-20-minute-52-second video features 21-year-old[1] Madurese[2] Muhammad Didit in his bedroom sitting on the floor against his mattress staring at nothing.[3] A viewer counted Didit blinking 362 times.[4] The video was shot between 11 pm and 1 am local time,[5] with preparation beginning 30 minutes earlier.[6] Didit originally planned for the video to be only 10 minutes long.[7] Didit stated that he continuously feared his parents would call him out of his room while the video was being recorded. He added, "If I don't answer them, I'll get into trouble." He stated that the video was a sarcastic commentary, in response to Indonesian netizens continually complaining about the lack of "educational" content on the Internet.[1] He stated that video "depends on you the viewers to filter and that is my only advice to all of you and hope that you will be entertained and benefit from this video."[8]

Virality and reception

The video went viral with Times Now reported 1.7 million views on 10 July, the day of its release,[9] and India.com reported 2 million views as of 3 August 2020.[10] As of early December 2020, the video has received over 4.3 million views with 134,000 likes.[11] Didit stated that he did not expect such attention, saying that the video was only meant for his subscribers.[1] The comment section itself, with people from various countries, received attention. One person suggested that Didit register the video for the Cannes Film Festival,[12] while another one imagined if Didit forgot to press the "Record" button and ended up wasting his time.[4] Many challenged Didit to make a similar video, but with longer duration.[13]

Vice considered it to be a trend in Indonesia, but found similar international videos such as "Doing Nothing For 8 Hours Straight" and Sitting and Smiling.[14] The video was regarded as "one of the best things on the internet, and [people around the world] are surprised that a video of a random guy doing nothing for two hours is interesting enough to get millions of hits."[3] Digital publication World of Buzz compared Didit to comedian Russell Peters.[15] UNILAD said, "Growing up, [...] parents all over the world say the same thing: 'You can't just sit about all day doing nothing.' [...] However, one man (Didit) has bucked the adage with his latest video."[2] Former Jakarta Vice Governor Sandiaga Uno praised the video for being "cool and original," as well as accurately capturing the boredoms of staying home during the COVID-19 pandemic.[16] Didit states that he is happy of Uno's comment.[17] The Hindustan Times called him "inspirational."[4]

Video game adaptation

A mobile game of the same name was launched on Google Play Store by a person using the name "Hepitier". The main menu is a white screen with the title and a "Start" button, and the game displays a man in a white background doing what Didit did, with a stopwatch below. News website Suara.com stated that the game is "simulating as if you are there, for 2 hours, doing nothing." The developers said that the game is able to distract users from the real world, e.g. pain, nausea, hunger, and fatigue.[18]
