Daphne is a city located in Baldwin County, Alabama on the eastern shoreline of Mobile Bay just off I-10: 11 miles east of Mobile, 45 miles west of Pensacola, Florida and 150 miles southwest of Montgomery, the State Capital.. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city is 16,581.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 36.5 km² (14.1 mi²). 34.9 km² (13.5 mi²) of it is land and 1.6 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.47% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 18,581 people, 6,563 households, and 4,672 families residing in the city. The population density was 475.3/km² (1,230.5/mi²). There were 7,222 housing units at an average density of 207.0/km² (536.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 85.33% White, 12.35% Black or African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.61% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.43% from other races, and 0.97% from two or more races. 1.53% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 6,563 households out of which 34.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.6% were married couples living together, 9.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.8% were non-families. 24.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.01.

In the city the population was spread out with 25.6% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 31.6% from 25 to 44, 25.6% from 45 to 64, and 10.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 94.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $52,603, and the median income for a family was $61,563. Males had a median income of $46,576 versus $29,052 for females. The per capita income for the city was $25,597. 4.5% of the population and 2.6% of families were below the poverty line. 4.5% of those under the age of 18 and 7.0% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
