The Master's College is a non-denominational, conservative Christian liberal arts college located in Santa Clarita, California, USA.

In the 2006–07 edition of U.S. News & World Report of "America’s Best Colleges", The Master’s College is ranked second (2nd) in the West as Best Comprehensive Colleges—Bachelor’s.[1] In the 2008 edition of U.S. News & World Report of “America’s Best Colleges”, The Master’s College has been ranked second (2nd) in the West as one of America’s Best Colleges in the category of Best Comprehensive Baccalaureate Colleges. This marks the eighth year in a row that The Master’s College was listed in the top tier of Western Region Baccalaureate Colleges.[2] The Master’s College is also cited as one of the best values, ranking 4th in the category of “Great Schools, Great Prices.”[3]

History

Originally named Los Angeles Baptist College and Seminary in 1927, the school was formed in downtown Los Angeles with the intention of providing a Biblical and Christ-centered education to Christian young men and women. In 1961, Los Angeles Baptist College moved to Newhall, a small community in the northern Los Angeles area, on the site of an old ranch that was once known as "Happy Jack's Dude Ranch." As a Regular Baptist College, LABC provided Biblical training for many years before the lack of support from the Regular Baptist Churches forced Dr. Dunkin, the College President to work out an agreement with John F. MacArthur, Pastor of Grace Community Church in the San Fernando Valley, to assume leadership of the college in 1985. At this time, the college changed its name to The Master's College, reflecting its wholehearted commitment to Jesus Christ. Since the beginning of Dr. MacArthur's tenure as President, the college has grown to feature a student body of approximately 1,000 undergraduate students, in addition to a Degree Completion program where working adults can earn a BA degree, as well as two Master of Arts programs, a California Teaching Credential program, and a rapidly growing online program.

The college provides separate dorms for men and women with the exception of C.W. Smith Hall and Hotchkiss Hall, where men live in the East Wing and women in the West Wing. In addition to the on-campus residence halls the colleges offers off-campus housing at Oak Manor located about two miles from the main campus.[4]

There are eight baccalaureate emphasis offered, they include: Certificate in TESOL, General Bible Studies, Bible Exposition, Biblical Counseling, Biblical Languages, Christian Education, Intercultural Studies, and Theology & Apologetics.[5] In addition to eight degree emphasis the college offers a one-year, intensive Bible training program known as The Master's Institute.[5]

Biological and Physical Science

The Master's College Biology Department offers a variety of emphases including pre-medical, pre-dental, pre-allied health services, cellular and molecular biology, and environmental biology.[6]

Biblical Counseling

TMC has a program for Master of Arts in Biblical Counseling. While many Christian colleges offer psychology, TMC stresses Biblical teaching over psychology for counseling. The content of the courses emphasizes the practical skills of counseling without neglecting the solid biblical foundation on which these skills are built. The classes, homework and reading assignments can be practically implemented in each student's life and ministry immediately.

Accreditation and memberships

The Master's College is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, an institutional accrediting body recognized by the Council on Postsecondary Accreditation and the U.S. Department of Education.[7]

The Master's College is one of approximately 105 members of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities.[8]

Student life

Athletics

The Master's College teams, nicknamed the Mustangs, are part of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), primarily competing in the Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC). TMC also competes as a member of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA). Men's sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer and track & field; while women's sports include basketball, cross country, soccer, track & field and volleyball.

Curtis Lewis, head coach of the women's soccer team, won the NIA Women's Soccer Coach of the Year award in 2008. In 2009,Jim Rickard won the NAIA Men’s Soccer Coach of the Year award.[9]

Jerry Owens is a professional baseball player from The Master's College. He was named the Small College All-American Outfielder for 2003, before being selected by the Montreal Expos in the 2nd round (57th overall) of the 2003 amateur entry draft. The outfielder played for the Chicago White Sox from 2006 to 2009, and had 32 stolen bases in 2007. He later became the property of the Seattle Mariners organization.[citation needed]

Mike Penberthy was a professional basketball player from The Master's College. Penberthy was not drafted by an NBA team but played for the Los Angeles Lakers for two years (2000–01 to 2001–02). Penberthy was part of the Lakers' 2000–01 championship team.[citation needed]

Erin Perperoglou (formerly Buescher) is a professional basketball player from The Master's College. She was drafted in the 2nd round of the 2001 WNBA Draft as the No. 23 pick. She won a WNBA championship in 2005 with the Sacramento Monarchs. She won the 2006 WNBA Most Improved Player Award.[citation needed]
