Thank-you for expressing your confidence in me at my recent Request for Adminship. The final result was 40/0/0, and my "superpowers" have now been activated. I look forward to helping out with the development of the encyclopedia. Physchim62 (talk • contribs)

GraemeL's RFA

Hi HappyCamper,

I am now an administrator and would like to thank you for your support on my RfA. I was very surprised at the number of votes and amount of and kind comments that I gathered. I'll do my best to remain level headed and humorous. Please don't hesitate to contact me if I mess up in the use of my new powers. --GraemeL (talk) 14:51, 21 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hello back

Thanks for your congrats on my talk page regarding my RfA, and good to meet you :) Same here, let me know if you ever need a hand with anything. Catch you around, Ramallite (talk) 06:45, 13 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Halibutt's RfA

Thanks. WikiThanks.
Thanks. WikiThanks.
I would like to express my thanks to all the people who took part in my (failed) RfA voting. I was both surprised and delighted about the amount of support votes and all the kind words! I was also surprised by the amount of people who stated clearly that they do care, be it by voting in for or against my candidacy. That's what Wiki community is about and I'm really pleased to see that it works.
As my RfA voting failed with 71% support, I don't plan to reapply for adminship any more. However, I hope I might still be of some help to the community. Cheers! Halibutt 05:10, 29 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Just a word of greetings

Why, Hello!

Hi! Haven't seen you in a while as well. I've been mostly sitting on IRC, and doing schoolwork :\ I hope to get a little more active this month :D — Ilγαηερ (Tαlκ) 03:22, 6 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Sure. There are quite a few IRC clients, however. IF you use Mozilla or Firefox you can try Chatzilla. You can also try mIRC, Xchat, and the IRC client that comes with Opera ( I use Chatzilla and opera IRC). The basics are pretty simple in that you have to add a new server/connection/ etc. (there are different names for this in different clients). For the server you want to type in 'irc://irc.freenode.net' and for the port, leave it as default. There is no password to sign in with for freenode. Then when you're connected you can type in '/join #wikipedia' (or any other channel -- usually they're indicated by a pound sign. Some others I know of are #wikipedia-en and #wikimedia. Also you can ask around). If you need any specific help with a certain client or with a setting feel free to ask me :) — Ilγαηερ (Tαlκ) 03:31, 6 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
If you've never registered with nickserv, I think you might want to take a different name and then type '/msg nickserv register [password]' and then when you get on type '/msg nickserv identify [password]'. This is a sort of like registering a username (in a loose sense). — Ilγαηερ (Tαlκ) 14:24, 6 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Merci pour ton accueil (thanks for your welcome)

Hi HappyCamper. Of course, I remember you. We have spoken together a few months ago. I note that you are very active on english Wikipedia. For my part, I'll try to improve or create some english articles related to France or french culture. And for the french wikipedia, I translate some featured articles like I did with Piccadilly Circus (the result in french is : fr:Piccadilly Circus). See you soon.

I don't know that you are a sysop here. I'd like to be sysop too (but in french), but not enough time to do it correctly. In the next futur, i'd like to improve the Eiffel Tower article, both in french and english. There so much things to say about it. I hesitate to write directly in the english wikipedia beacause I don't speak fluently, but I admit that I read Wikipedia in English daily. Wikipedia is growing so fast day after day and is becoming a very interesting source of information. By the way, for "talk page", in french we say "page de discussion". J'imagine que tu ne manques pas de travail ici, alors bon courage à toi et à bientôt. Kuxu 02:05, 25 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

MediaWiki

There's no special list of pages, other than Special:Allpages -> MediaWiki. Your offer is appreciated, but if you do want to help out keep in mind if you make one mistake, you'll screw the site over. Also make sure you don't delete the actual templates. And if you do want to help, go to the last page and start deleting from Z backwards. I'm up to half way through C, though I haven't been spending as much time as I could. Also I'm a bit nervous about taking help from anyone as if someone else messes up, it'll still be bad for me for accepting the help and starting the entire thing. So be cautious. Alternatively you can kill off the MediaWiki talk pages I've missed, there aren't too many of those. Redwolf24 (talk) 03:45, 1 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

That's another reason to not join in, it's a one-man campaign by myself to remove the clutter, partly to make it easier to find what MediaWiki page you want when looking for something. Redwolf24 (talk) 03:56, 1 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Signature

Actually there are no nowiki tags missing from my signature. Signatures automatically have a ]] appended because it is expected that the contents of the signature is a link to the user's userpage. Many of us modify our signatures to add an additional link such as one to our talk page. In my case, I wanted to get an effect that looked like what you get when you use Template:User: Jdavidb (talk · contribs). However, I was still stuck with that ]] which looked awful, so I stuck in a [[ in a nowiki tag to make it look balanced. I'm still trying to decide if it looks good this way, or not. Jdavidb [[talk • contribs]] 00:17, 1 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Same thing has started again on the Jihad article. The same editors came in immediately after you unprotected and changed the version with many major and POV edits like these [1] (marked as minor here!). Please take another look. I agree with your idea that small changes should be made at a time and should be discussed, but a certain group of editors is not letting this happen. User:Yuber breaking arbitration by anon-vandalising my user page, claiming I'm a sockpuppet of User:Enviroknot, etc

From User_talk:BrandonYusufToropov:

"User:Chaosfeary is most definitely Enviroknot. I will try to get some people to look at his account soon.Yuber(talk) 16:28, 26 November 2005 (UTC)"[reply]

This isn't true, I have never had another Wikipedia account, this is the only one I've had - I hope my IP is not going to be shared with other non-administrator users and Al-Queda supporters such as Yuber, who is currently blocked from editing Syria (see his talk page) for one month from this date for continuing to remove properly sourced and relevant material (trying to constantly enforce Islamist POV on NPOV articles)...
--Chaosfeary 19:55, 26 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

After doing some research, I also found the following article, Wikipedia:Requests_for_arbitration/Yuber, which contains many criticisms of Yuber's "vicious POV pushing", intentionally starting edit wars, removing sourced material he dislikes, claiming consensus when there is none, harassing users, sockpuppeting and so on.
User_talk:Enviroknot also mentions the following:
* Both Yuber and Guy Montag are each placed on Wikipedia:Probation for one year from the date of closing this case (9th of October, 2005). Should any sysop feel that it is necessary that either of them be banned from an article where they is engaged in edit warring, removal of sourced material, POV reorganizations of the article, or any other activity which the user considers disruptive they shall place a template {{Yuber banned}} or {{Guy Montag banned}} as appropriate at the top of the talk page of the article, and notify them on their talk page. The template shall include the ending date of the ban (one year from this decision) and a link to Wikipedia:Probation. The template may be removed by any editor, including them, at the end of the ban. If they edit an article they are banned from, you will be briefly blocked from editing Wikipedia, for up to a week for repeat offenses.
* Yuber is instructed to use only this account, and no anonymous IPs. What editing constitutes Yuber's is up to any sysop to decide. If Yuber violates this, any sysop is authorised to ban them for up to a week.

Yours,
James F. (talk) 11:43, 9 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
If User:83.31.171.2 is indeed User:Yuber editing under an anonymous proxy or his own IP address (as seems likely looking at the the vandalism on my user page by the IP and speed of which he edited the talk page) he would be violating this rule...
--Chaosfeary 20:18, 26 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Please don't pay attention to Chaosfeary. He is just another sockpuppet of Enviroknot. Yuber(talk) 20:52, 26 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Please, please, try and prove this ridiculous accusation, because it's a blatant lie and therefore impossible... I have been editing for quite a while as per my edit history, I am nothing to do with "Enviroknot", I had not even heard the name before you started flinging accusations. You seem a very paranoid individual, much as you and User:BrandonYusufToropov's conspiracy theories about Talk:Islam ("it's not that quite a lot of people don't agree with me, it's just one person! I'm right!" etc..) --Chaosfeary 21:12, 26 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Chaosfeary

As I see you're dealing with this situation, it might help you to know that Jayjg has conducted a user check, and confirms that User:Chaosfeary is not banned User:Enviroknot. Cheers, SlimVirgin (talk) 12:31, 27 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

User:BrandonYusufToropov continues to make personal attacks on me, violating WP:NPA, and continues to slander me on talk pages claiming that I am "enviroknot"... Perhaps you could explain that this is not true, I have already, but he doesn't seem to want to know. --Chaosfeary 11:54, 28 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your message

Actually, if you take a look at what Jayjg actually posted, he is talking about IP addresses. I'm talking about individuals.

I point out for consideration that, pretty much the instant Chaosfeary was banned from editing Islamofascism (term), a new User:FluffyPinkKittensOfDoom materialized. (As in no edits before Chaosfeary's 3RR violation.) Please work your way through the diff sequence that begins [here] and you will see that Fluffy apparently has a long-running hatred of me.

What it boils down to is whether or not one can recognize someone who is using distinctive (and, I might add, distinctively obscene) language and a specific M.O. to sabotage articles here. I believe one can, and that the fact that someone is capable of switching IP addresses doesn't change that.

Jayjg, whose judgment I trust, also pointed out that the edit histories were "suggestive," though why that assessment hasn't been as widely circulated is not clear to me. Anyway, for a taste of this renegade's cooking, look up User:Enviroknot BrandonYusufToropov 14:18, 29 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Greek reconstructionism

Greek Recon

Hey - I replied to you over on my talk page, but can cut & paste it here if you prefer. Thanks! Cyberdenizen 08:20, 29 November 2005 (UTC)(talk)[reply]

Re: Greek Reconstructionism

Thank you for intervening. There are email headers in the archives of the talk page with uninvolved third parties legal names and IP's listed which I think should be removed. 65.182.172* is throwing around names of totally uninvolved parties whom he apparently has issues with elsewhere. I feel this is harassment, although I guess I'd have to contact the parties to see how they felt about it. Regardless, I feel that posting people's legal names indicate extreme paranoia and maliciousness - especially when the party will not even create a user name.

Did you see one of my requests for mediation? For context, I would like to direct you to this (section 3:35) and this (section 4:10).

I don't know where the best place to reply to you is - my talk page, here or at Greek Reconstructionism, but I figured you'd see this here. I feel the entry is terrible and needs to be reworked. Notwithstanding the facts, I'd appreciate any critiques just on technical and NPOV merits if you have the time. Should I contests portions of the entry point by point like Adelamae did in the talk section? 65.182.172* is totally unwilling to accept any changes to the entry...

Thank you for taking the time to do this. - Cyberdenizen 04:21, 9 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Page protection of Category:Terrorists

Hi Beland - it was a pleasant surprise to see you add material to the category talk page. Hardly anyone else has commented on it, so it seemed that the page was almost neglected. Anyway, I think we'll leave the talk page unprotected the way it is. Would it be possible for you to monitor that page more often? I am not so familiar with the topic. Yea, I usually do blocks and such short term as well, unless someone is really nasty. After a few minutes most vandals get bored move on, so often long-term blocks aren't needed. --DanielCD 03:31, 4 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Block

It was a bit harsh, but it seemed particularly fit since the 2nd act of vandalism came 5 minutes after the 1st warning for vandalism in the same page. Blatant vandalism is cause for immediate block and the Chile page has been the object of a lot of vandalism lately, so I've been dealing with it a little more promptly... Feel free to unblock (I won't take it personally), but I think is warranted. The idea behind these 24hr blocks is to give them time to either calm down or stop the current rampage. That page was a redlink by the time I saw it. Remember, us mere mortals can't see deleted articles. Thus, I'm not exactly sure what to make of this. I did do a search, and it seems to be some TV show, possibly on FOX. It has an Uncyclopedia: article, which convinces me it's legit(seriously, they make up facts, but usually not topics). Superm401 | Talk 04:13, 30 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The only thing I got when I searched google was a review from a page that dealt with King of the Hill. Seriously, part of the description was "banned because of the insult Alfred" (going from memory) and it had as a character "Randal the vandal, who was known for vandalizing wikipedia articles". It sounds to me like a nihilartikel, created by someone who knows the procedures here. How else would they know to try and force an AfD instead of a speedy? In any case, thanks for looking into it Happy Camper. :) --Syrthiss 13:00, 30 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I saw you just reverted vandalism on George W. Bush, and wondered what you thought about the proposals to curb what's going on there. If you have time, check out Wikipedia:Semi-protection policy, and weigh in (there's a bit of a large discussion page, so be prepared.) Hope to see you there. -Mysekurity (have you seen this?) 01:32, 5 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. Yes it is. Hopefully, the guys and I will be able to summarize it soon, but the basic info is on the project page, as it should be. Vandalism

I guess humor isn't a template

Well first of all, sorry. You have a valid point about my alert being "over the top." However, after the first fifteen garbage reverts of the evening, one is rather frazzled when a convict is let through the door again. What ever happened to three strikes you're out!? We are very liberal here at Wikipedia, but if we (as Wikipedians and constructive contributors) continue to be patient with users who obviously have no regard for common decency and act as fools in their anonymity, everything that we've worked diligently to craft loses its authority: Wikipedia will rot to become no more than a joke. I don't mind the odd newby edit, but a consistently incompetent user must be dealt with. --Master Jay 02:12, 24 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yup, it's User:WaW alright... Owen× 03:25, 1 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi HC! Any edit from a 63.19.xxx.xxx is the "North Carolina Vandal"; it appears he made a few more sockpuppets since his last block expired (WaW, A pair of shoes -- while I have been watching for him I missed these -- see my post on AN/I under [4]).
Characteristic of his vandalism is bizarre redirects, misleading use of templates, obsession with cartoon TV show characters, liberal vs. conservative and elite vs. redneck "issues"; he also likes too make sockpuppets to argue with each other and pretend separate identities. It might be time to write up a long-term-alerts page on this guy, since I'd guess he has 3,000 vandalisms to his credit, since about June of this year. Antandrus (talk) 03:41, 1 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Since he reliably edits (for now!) from the IP range 63.19.128.0/17, I just blocked it for a week. I am yet to see a good edit from this range, and I am yet to get an e-mail from an innocent blocked user for blocking this range ... so maybe this will help. Cheers! I'm actually not certain what the company is -- can you tell from this? [5] -- uu.net seems to be related to MCI, but I'm not 100% sure how this works. He uses a dialup and seems to live in north central North Carolina, which is not surprising since the articles he vandalises are regarding places around there. Massive archival

Hey HC, Nice job at the RD/et al. Kinda nice how the section numbers are now synced with the date. Any way to keep it like that without piling up a full month of questions before the next archive? I was thinking that if an archive happens say after 2 weeks, we could replace the archived section headers and under each date add Questions asked on this date have been archived. No, nevermind, that would screw-up the following month. Well, anyhow it does look pretty when the section # is the same as the date. --hydnjo talk 04:20, 5 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The Flow. Obiviously, there is content there. I, partularry, say things in answer to questions, that I never thought of before, and probibly will not again. The question on flow becomes, how to orginize questions, in other than strict chronological order, to contribute to the quality and depth of the WikipediA as a whole? We have articles about primary schools in Prince Rupert, a tiny fishing village in British Colombia! Everybody just adds stuff where they like! I happen to like answering questions. I did it for a large computer group for 8 Years. Turns out I was answering a question on two famous Upanishads tonight. Not lost

It just got edited to death but it's still revivable. I started feeling like the lone obstacle and relented to see if anyone would notice (yeah! HC did). I had written in defence of the original concept so often that I began to wonder if I was being an obstructionist :-(

About our janitorial duties at the RD, how do I make a bot request?  :-) --hydnjo talk 02:34, 22 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

A bot request for archiving was already there so I added a request for section dating. It seems that the two should be considered together as the section dating bot could be then used to trigger the archiving activity at some regular interval. As for ASK, why don't you take a crack at it. I think it's ready for your refreshing insight. Thanks, hydnjo talk 04:30, 23 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

RD All Page

I made a trivial change (Science & Math --> Math), but I wish we could do something about the larger problem of the date headers being at the same level as the page names. However, (as far as I know), the automatic section button can't be customized to go down a level. So it's as good as it gets. Superm401 | Talk 03:44, 30 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

RD/HD section date format

I've been using a MONTH DAY format but somtimes someone gets there before me (only a couple of times) and sections by DAY MONTH. I havn't made an issue of it but wondered if that mixture of formats might screw up your archiving activities (or bot archiving if it ever gets to that). FYI, I put up a bot request for section dating little over a week ago but no response yet. --hydnjo talk 03:36, 1 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Learning IPA

Hi, a while back you asked about learning the IPA. Well, short of taking an introductory phonetics/phonology course at your nearest university, you could try first learning the symbols at IPA chart for English. Those are the most basic symbols as used for English. For the vowels, just focus on whichever set most closely matches your own accent: Received Pronunciation (RP), General American (GenAm), or Australian English (AuE). Just go through the list and try to associate the symbol with the sound. After you've started to get a feel, try transcribing the example words. Then try to transcribe some short sentences (I usually use one-line quotes from famous movies in my classes). Once you've got a good feel for the basics, look at International Phonetic Alphabet for English, which is a little more detailed. If you need help, or want someone to correct your transcriptions, let me know! --User:Angr/talk 18:14, 17 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, the difference between the sounds usually transcribed b and p in Chinese (whether Mandarin or Cantonese) is not the same as the difference between the sounds spelled b and p in English. In Chinese, the sound spelled b is an unaspirated voiceless stop and the sound spelled p is an aspirated voiceless stop. The aspirated stop has a little puff of air after it, which is indicated in phonetic transcription with a little raised h, so the phonetic transcription of Chinese p is [pʰ]. We have this sound in English, too; the English p at the beginning of a word is aspirated, so English pin, pet, pad, etc., all start with [pʰ] (but for Chinese you might want to make the puff of air last just a tiny bit longer than is usual in English). The unaspirated stop, the one spelled b in transliteration of Chinese, does not have this puff of air. In standard IPA transcription, this sound is just spelled [p], but some people use [p⁼] (it's actually a little raised equals sign, not a z) to emphasize the fact that it's unaspirated. We have unaspirated [p⁼] in English, too, but not as the first sound of a word. We have it after s, so spin starts with [sp⁼]. If you want to make the [p⁼] at the beginning of a word (as you have to in Chinese), say the word spin a few times, then try just thinking the s and starting the word at the p. You'll notice then that there's no puff of air the way there is in the normal word pin. Try making the distinction a few times: "(s)pin... pin... (s)pin... pin..." until you can really hear the difference and can make the unaspirated sound without thinking of an s first. --User:Angr/talk 07:05, 18 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Image strangeness

I was admiring phase-shift keying and the images, and noticed some strangeness with Image:Receiver QPSK.PNG. When you click on the image, its page loads up ok, but there is no upload history, no edit history and the 'image' button at top left is red. What's with that? my watchlist

well, it certainly isn't 1,000 controversial articles. In fact, most of them are somewhere in the backwaters of Wikipedia, obscure Hittite kings and the like. I figure that if some bored vandal finds his way there, chances are that they go long undiscovered unless someone has these on their watchlists, so imho, any active editors should have some random stubs, dab pages and redirects on their watchlists. But you are right, there is far too much activity on my watchlist nevertheless, and I'm obviously missing a lot of edits I would be interested in. I'm considering pruning it of the most controversial articles, since these tend to be well-watched anyway. regards, dab () 17:42, 13 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Asking your advice on my admin nom

Hello again, HappyCamper. Yesterday I was nominated for adminship by Wonderfool. It's flattering of course, but after having read through the vote discussions for recent successful and failed nominations, my expectations are that it would not be successful. I have been active on WP, but most of my activities have not brought me into the necessary level of interaction with other users. For one thing, I have relatively few edits on talk pages, and few also on Afd. But I thought I would seek your advice. Do you think I should accept the nomination now, or wait? And if I decide to turn it down, what is the procedure for doing so?

Thanks a lot. --BillC 10:09, 20 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The Rougherence desk

Thanks for your message. I took a look over WP:RD properly for the first time. I wonder if I might talk to you about it a little, in a philosophical kind of way. You (personally) appear to be easily the most knowledgeable editor within the science/etc areas (you appear quite the polymath actually). However, I see a lot of, frankly, amateurish answers from others that often confess to being guesses ("I would guess that", "I would think", "I suppose", "Probably"). I see a lot of questions that can be answered with a simple wikilink — and thus a lot of teenagers not willing to do even the smallest part of their homework. So, philosophically speaking, do you think a Reference Desk on a Wiki can work, bearing in mind that Wikipedia itself is basically unciteable because of it's lack of credentialling (rather than the vandals)? Don't be offended: I'm just giving it a hard time to see how it bears up. Also, the questions are answered with remarkable speed. On the up side, I saw some answers that I know to be correct and that don't appear in the relevant article. Is there a pass-the-answer-on mechanism for mining the higher-quality RD answers for the encyclopedia-proper? -Splashtalk 23:12, 21 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I did receive it and have read it. I've been seriously negligent with my email over the last few days...Anyway. I think the points about the absence of warfare and politics is important: there's certainly no (or very little) carping goes on there, which should lead to a spirit of good collaboration, without meaning to sound at all cheesey. AfD exhibits the same sort of breaking point: articles get little to no debate when the number per day rises much above 100 (and it usually does). It's good that some articles have resulted from it too; I hope we get some new Wikipedians from it from time to time. I wonder if the nature of the RD doesn't produce Wikipedians as much as might since they don't have to delve into the encyclopedia-proper: I guess that means wikilinks are important on the ref desk. I took another look at the answers just now, and it seems to look quite a bit better today; I guess it varies. Your points about how the ref desk is perceived and how it works were quite enlightening, I thought. I've decided I will look over it periodically to see if there's anything I can answer. It seems that most of the questions are out of my field though. Perhaps (wireless) comms is a lot more boring than I thought... -Splashtalk 15:14, 28 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
