Question from MeCantSpelll (00:08, 20 August 2023)

Regarding images to upload can you give me a brief and more understandble guideline as to what I can and cannot upload? --MeCantSpelll (talk) 00:08, 20 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @MeCantSpelll! Lucky for you I can't spell eyether.
I can help you with this but it may be easier for me to describe the rules of something more specific. Do you have specific plans to upload an image, such as an album cover or a piece of architecture? If so I can dive into the rules if there are any.
If instead you just want to be involved in the image field, let me know, and I can give you a general gist instead. Panini! 🥪 04:21, 20 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, can I send you a draft of this new article I am writing up for you to check over and let me know if it would end up being approved? Thank you in advance for your time and no worries if you are not able to, regards. Lordrusted (talk) 22:06, 23 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2023 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
  • Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
  • Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.

Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them and within 24 hours of the end of the final. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.

I will be standing down as a judge after the end of the contest. I think the Cup encourages productive editors to improve their contributions to Wikipedia and I hope that someone else will step up to take over the running of the Cup. Sturmvogel 66 (talk), and Cwmhiraeth (talk)

Your GA nomination of Lego City Undercover

The article Lego City Undercover you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Lego City Undercover for comments about the article, and Talk:Lego City Undercover/GA1 for the nomination. Well done! If the article has never appeared on the Main Page as a "Did you know" item, and has not appeared within the last year either as "Today's featured article", or as a bold link under "In the news" or in the "On this day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear at DYK. Question from Taxurfer (01:04, 20 September 2023)

Hi Blaze,

I see that you are my mentor on Wikipedia. Thank you. I recently submitted a new article about a person, and it was declined because my primary reference was LinkedIn. Thereafter I found other credible sources on the web and replaced the LinkedIn refence with these.

Unfortunately, the article was rejected again. This time however, it feels like the reasons for rejection are subjective. The person I have written about has had a profound impact on the Internet, heck I'd say even a lot of Wikipedia was written using the code this guy wrote.

Could you please advise what can I do to make the submission stronger?

Regards, Taxurfer --Taxurfer (talk) 01:04, 20 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Taxurfer I've double-checked to make sure if you were mine, and it seems from your message that something may have happened with the system. User:Blaze Wolf appears to be your mentor. He's a great guy! I pinged him here so he is aware of the mixup. Panini! 🥪 01:40, 20 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Panini!: Heya! I've set it so all my mentees are redirected to someone else. It should've told them that they won't be talking to the mentor it says they're talking to. I've suggested that be changed in the past but nothing ever came of it. ― Blaze WolfTalkblaze__wolf 02:52, 20 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ah! I didn't know that was a feature. I'll take this one, then.
Hey @Taxurfer! Those declines can be frustrating because of their template nature, but I assure you that the links you can find within them will be very helpful in guiding you to find what sources you need for the draft to be accepted.
The links that will be most helpful in your source hunt will be this article on our general notability guidelines and this article on what makes a source reliable. I also suggest looking into this article on primary sources. Refs two and three on your article, although in-depth, are associated with the company he works for/college he attended, meaning that they aren't enough to justify the article's noteworthiness on their own.
KylieTastic, would you also like to give some additional personal insight to your decline? Panini! 🥪 15:25, 20 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Taxurfer, all new articles on Wikipedia have to show the subject is notable (See WP:N) which in most cases requires significant coverage (WP:SIGCOV) in multiple independent (WP:INDY) reliable sources (WP:RS). See WP:NBASIC for the basic criteria as part of Wikipedia:Notability (people) for the slightly longer version. Your first reference just mentions them (no significant coverage) and also the word "instrumental" is not clearly shown by the source, so more of a puff word. The second source is again just a mention and does not even verify the first half of the sentence it is used for. The third source has more depth and does verify more claims, but as it is not independent is not helpful for showing notability. Your final source is again just a mention and not of the subject, it also does not even link that Vickie Sanders to the subject, so really only shows that someone with the same surname is a board member. So at the moment we have nothing to show notability. You need to look to see if you can find some independent sources with significant coverage of them. Regards KylieTastic (talk) 16:22, 20 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi KylieTastic, thank you for a detailed description of the reasons for rejection. I'll try to find more credible sources. Also, thanks @Panini! for providing links to guidelines and reliable sources. Taxurfer (talk) 00:53, 23 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, the first reference is a definitive book on Winsock, and this person is an author. Is that not a credible proof for their involvement in its creation? Taxurfer (talk) 01:06, 23 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Taxurfer, yes the source is find to show they were involved in the creation. There are two separate issues for articles the first having sources to verify (WP:V) claims but separately to show that a subject is notable enough for an article which would be looking that the sources or usually just a subset of them show this. A rule of thumb is at least 3 independent sources with significant coverage. Cheers KylieTastic (talk) 10:52, 24 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for getting to that Kylie! I was out on vacation. Panini! 🥪 18:32, 24 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Simon M. Mwila Hey there! To have an article published you can follow through the steps detailed at Wikipedia:Articles for creation.
I would like to inform you however, that this article seems to be about yourself. Writing about yourself is highly discouraged; you can read more about why that is here. Panini! 🥪 04:55, 25 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

(megasigh) On Sept. 4, for reasons I am not at liberty to reveal, Shoot for the Stars emailed me asking me to permaban them from UTRS and to remove talk page access and email. Given the history, the UTRS ban I set to expire on Sept. 4, 2024 instead of making it permanent. That was about seven weeks ago. I doubt that the reasons for the unsuccessful unblock requests and that impassioned emailed request have changed in that time. Don't know what to say. They're lucky to have a friend like you. Maybe could you remind then of that emailed request?

If they are truly certain they want to request unblocking, they can email the Arbitration Committee because this is a WP:CHECKUSER block. arbcom-en@wikimedia.org. Thanks. -- Deepfriedokra (talk) 23:36, 25 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The Joy of Music

Hello. After seeing your comments on Sergecross73's talk page, I noticed you'd been extensively working on a draft for The Joy of Music (album). I hope you don't mind, but I cleaned up the repeated text in the lead (which I assume was a placeholder), curly quotes, infobox formatting and removed the component sales charts from the charts table, added the use mdy template and moved it into mainspace over a redirect I made for it as it's definitely notable. I understand you might have felt it was incomplete, but you can still expand it in mainspace. I don't see why any editor would object to it currently being there as it has 30+ citations and charted. Also, as for what I said about that other editor on Sergecross73's talk page, I didn't come up with term "battleground mentality". It's just that the word "mentality" usually follows if somebody mentions WP:BATTLEGROUND, and I think it's fair to say that user has one. Ss112 01:59, 26 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Ss112 I thought so, it was just an observation that some trucker would love a shirt with that on it. Thanks for the cleanup! It saved me some time. I took a break from that article to work on 52 (album series) (that's how I edit, I jump all over the place), but you're right, the article was pretty much done. @Sarmilan1992 Unfortunately socials like those would not help establish the passing of our general notability guidelines (GNG). These sources were created by yourself, and would therefore be considered primary sources, which don't apply to the GNG.
The criteria for what counts as a reliable source is that it must be created by a reliable person or work, and is unrelated to the subject material (secondary sources). You can read more about these rules here. Panini! 🥪 22:13, 7 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Allow me to express my deepest, most heartfelt apathy towards your elections. My passion for your ArbCom elections is akin to a hamster’s fervor for quantum physics—a marvel of disinterest, if I say so myself. Your precision is truly impeccable! Yet, regrettably, your message found itself in the abyss of my indifference.
Your dedication to inundate inboxes with election fervor is awe-inspiring. I can almost imagine you, a little digital crusader, tirelessly sending these missives out, expecting a chorus of excitement in return. Alas, the sound you hear is just the echo of a vacant room. Please, MediaWiki message delivery, take a moment to absorb my absolute lack of enthusiasm. I hope this message reaches you in good humor, or at least in functional binary code. If not, well, that's the way the cookies crumble in the algorithm, isn't it?

DYK for 52 (album series)

On 11 December 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article 52 (album series), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that country musician Kristian Bush celebrated his 52nd birthday by releasing 52 songs in the span of one year? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/52 (album series). You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, 52 (album series)), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Question from Monicaswolf (11:39, 18 December 2023)

Nice to meet you Panini. I found an article in the German Wikipedia on Hugo Wolf but I don't know German. I need to read it in English. The reason is Hugo Wolf was my great-uncle and there is some information that is missing that I can add. Also, I would like to know who wrote it to contact them. --Monicaswolf (talk) 11:39, 18 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @Monicaswolf! From a quick look through there's seems to be multiple articles with the name Hugo Wolf and/or are similar to the name. Can you share with me the URL so I can be certain which one you are referring to? Panini! 🥪 16:40, 18 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Crisfern5 (18:19, 19 December 2023)

Hi- I'm trying to start my own wikipedia page, but it seems to want to direct me to another Cristina Fernandez (who is not me - but the ex-President of Argentina) Can you please advise? --Crisfern5 (talk) 18:19, 19 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @Crisfern5! In order to make different articles with similar names we use disambiguations; for example, Brand New (band) and Brand New (Ben Rector album). We usually differentiate by using parenthesis. The disambiguation you use depends on the subject of the article; you can look at this list for the common ones. Hello @PrashantAnand03! Whether or not the article is published is based on the quality of both the subject itself and your work on it. All the resources and information you need to get started can be found at Help:Your first article, and don't be afraid to ask me further questions. Happy editing! Edgenuity founded in 1988?

Is this correct? this was an old edit from 2021. 120.28.224.22 (talk) 08:23, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

120.28.224.22, this edit appears to be made by me and was noticed by nobody for a long while (maybe because I'm the only one maintaining the page at this point). I misread this source as 1988 instead of 1998, when the company was actually founded. That's my bad! Panini! 🥪 20:42, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Also someone made a edit saying it was located in Scottsdale, New York. that's not true either 120.28.229.213 (talk) 05:42, 22 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
So you misread the source; the Edgenuity name or even the E2020 name existed in 1988? 120.28.229.213 (talk) 05:58, 22 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Doesn't look like it; both come from 1998. Panini! 🥪 14:35, 22 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Didn't Edgenuity use their current name first in 2011? 120.28.229.213 (talk) 11:39, 23 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It seems likely, as that's what it was referred to prior to being purchased by Weld North in 2011. Before that they were Education2020. Panini! 🥪 16:34, 23 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
They used Education 2020 from 1988–2011. When it was purchased by Weld North, it became Edgenuity 120.28.229.213 (talk) 16:41, 23 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you

Yesterday, I was doing some vandalism patrol and I made a bunch of mistakes reverting edits that didn't look like good faith edits but in fact were. I've been feeling a bit discouraged and decided to give patrol a rest to stop making further mistakes. However, your essay on mistakes gave me hope for my future on Wikipedia. I just thought you would like to know that that essay is quite helpful. Also, how are you able to make GAs and FAs? I assume it's a lot of hard work, but if you have any tips, those would be of great help. ❤HistoryTheorist❤ 00:20, 23 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the kind words @HistoryTheorist! They mean a lot and I'm glad that little essay gets some readership.
A good and featured article are made just like any other article except you got to do a really stinking good job at it. Writing the article well and arranging the words in the best way, free of grammatical errors. Properly sourcing everything to the highest quality of reliable sources. ensuring comprehensiveness and accuracy. Once you have achieved this you submit the article for review to get second opinions: good articles only have one reviewer, and featured articles have at the very least three, plus a source reviewer, image reviewer, and if it's your first time, a spot-check reviewer. Featured articles should be front page worthy, hence why those bad boys go through a lot.
Good articles are usually simple, and if you "finish" an article thinking it's the best you can do than it most likely is and will pass a good article review. Of course stuff will be caught by others, especially my work; see this review of mine where my work is bashed by linguistic genius IceWelder. I really would have never noticed any of that stuff!
The quality and difficulty difference between a good article and a featured article is massive. Here's the good article review of my second FA Paper Mario, and at the time the article looked like this. Compare that to the humongous featured article review that resulted in what the article is right now.
You can read about the specific criteria for good articles and featured articles here and here. I can help you out with the process once you have a goal in mind. Panini! 🥪 05:07, 23 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
