WikiCup 2023 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

• Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
• Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
• Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.

Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them and within 24 hours of the end of the final. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! I see that you are my mentor on Wikipedia. Thank you. I recently submitted a new article about a person, and it was declined because my primary reference was LinkedIn. Thereafter I found other credible sources on the web and replaced the LinkedIn refence with these.

Unfortunately, the article was rejected again. This time however, it feels like the reasons for rejection are subjective. The person I have written about has had a profound impact on the Internet, heck I'd say even a lot of Wikipedia was written using the code this guy wrote.

Could you please advise what can I do to make the submission stronger?

Hey @Taxurfer! Those declines can be frustrating because of their template nature, but I assure you that the links you can find within them will be very helpful in guiding you to find what sources you need for the draft to be accepted.

The links that will be most helpful in your source hunt will be this article on our general notability guidelines and this article on what makes a source reliable. I also suggest looking into this article on primary sources. Refs two and three on your article, although in-depth, are associated with the company he works for/college he attended, meaning that they aren't enough to justify the article's noteworthiness on their own.

Hi Taxurfer, all new articles on Wikipedia have to show the subject is notable (See WP:N) which in most cases requires significant coverage (WP:SIGCOV) in multiple independent (WP:INDY) reliable sources (WP:RS). See WP:NBASIC for the basic criteria as part of Wikipedia:Notability (people) for the slightly longer version. Your first reference just mentions them (no significant coverage) and also the word "instrumental" is not clearly shown by the source, so more of a puff word. The second source is again just a mention and does not even verify the first half of the sentence it is used for. The third source has more depth and does verify more claims, but as it is not independent is not helpful for showing notability. Your final source is again just a mention and not of the subject, it also does not even link that Vickie Sanders to the subject, so really only shows that someone with the same surname is a board member. So at the moment we have nothing to show notability. You need to look to see if you can find some independent sources with significant coverage of them. Hi Taxurfer, yes the source is find to show they were involved in the creation. There are two separate issues for articles the first having sources to verify (WP:V) claims but separately to show that a subject is notable enough for an article which would be looking that the sources or usually just a subset of them show this. Community configuration 2.0

• Community Configuration 2.0 is a feature that will enable Wikimedia communities to easily customize and configure features to meet their unique needs. This approach provides non-technical moderators with more independence and control over enabling/disabling and customizing features for their communities.
• Technical approach and associated tasks are detailed in this Epic task on Phabricator.
• Initial designs are drafted for two different approaches (see images). We will soon demo interactive prototypes to interested admins, stewards, and experienced editors (T346109). Please let us know if you have feedback on the design approach, or want to participate in prototype testing.

IP Masking

• The Growth team has been working on several updates to ensure Growth maintained features will be compatible with future IP Masking changes. This work has included code changes to: Recent Changes (T343322), Echo notifications (T333531), the Thanks extension (T345679) and Mentorship (T341390).
• Before December, the Growth team will initiate community discussions with the goal of migrating communities from Flow to DiscussionTools. This move aims to minimize the necessity for additional engineering work to make Flow compatible with IP Masking. (T346108)

Mentorship

• We assembled some resources for mentors at Mediawiki wiki. This resource page is translatable and will be linked from the mentor dashboard.
• We are working to resolve a bug related to mentors properly returning after being marked as "Away". (T347024)
• Half of newcomers at English Wikipedia get a mentor assigned to them. To ensure every newcomer receives mentorship, we need additional volunteer mentors at English Wikipedia to achieve a 100% coverage rate. We also encourage experienced users from other wikis to help newcomers at their own community.

Scaling Growth features

• We continue the deployment of the structured task "add a link" to all Wikipedias. We plan to scale the task to all Wikipedias that have link suggestions available by the end of 2023.
• We plan to scale the new Impact Module to all Wikipedias soon, but first we are investigating a bug with the job that refreshes the Impact Module data. (T344428)
• At some wikis, newcomers have access to the "add an image" structured task. This task suggests images that may be relevant to add to unillustrated articles. Newcomers at these wikis can now add images to unillustrated articles sections. (T345940) The wikis that have this task are listed under "Images recommendations" at the Growth team deployment table.

Other news

• We disabled the “add an image” task temporarily (T345188) because there was a failure in the image suggestions pipeline (T345141). This is now fixed.
• You can read a report about the Growth team’s representation at Wikimania in Singapore here. Growth team members presented two sessions at Wikimania Singapore.
• After a 2.5 years-long collaboration with Bangala Wikipedia, we have decided to start a collaboration with another wiki. Swahili Wikipedia is now a pilot wiki for Growth experiments.

(megasigh) On Sept. 4, for reasons I am not at liberty to reveal, Shoot for the Stars emailed me asking me to permaban them from UTRS and to remove talk page access and email. Given the history, the UTRS ban I set to expire on Sept. 4, 2024 instead of making it permanent. That was about seven weeks ago. I doubt that the reasons for the unsuccessful unblock requests and that impassioned emailed request have changed in that time. Don't know what to say. They're lucky to have a friend like you. Maybe could you remind then of that emailed request?

The Joy of Music

Hello. After seeing your comments on Sergecross73's talk page, I noticed you'd been extensively working on a draft for The Joy of Music (album). I hope you don't mind, but I cleaned up the repeated text in the lead (which I assume was a placeholder), curly quotes, infobox formatting and removed the component sales charts from the charts table, added the use mdy template and moved it into mainspace over a redirect I made for it as it's definitely notable. I understand you might have felt it was incomplete, but you can still expand it in mainspace. I don't see why any editor would object to it currently being there as it has 30+ citations and charted. Also, as for what I said about that other editor on Sergecross73's talk page, I didn't come up with term "battleground mentality". It's just that the word "mentality" usually follows if somebody mentions WP:BATTLEGROUND, and I think it's fair to say that user has one. Ss112 01:59, 26 October 2023 (UTC)

The WikiCup is a marathon rather than a sprint and all those reaching the final round have been involved in the competition for the last ten months, improving Wikipedia vastly during the process. @Sarmilan1992 Unfortunately socials like those would not help establish the passing of our general notability guidelines (GNG). These sources were created by yourself, and would therefore be considered primary sources, which don't apply to the GNG.

Impact Module

At the beginning of November 2023, the Growth team deployed the New Impact Module to all Wikipedias. We recently released a follow up improvement to how edit data was displayed based on editor feedback. [1]

Add a Link

We released “add a link” to 35 more Wikipedias. [2] [3]

We have a few Wikipedias remaining:

• German and English Wikipedia will be contacted at the beginning of January 2024.
• There are a few small wikis that will not receive the task until they have enough articles for the algorithm to work properly.

Community Configuration

• We shared Community Configuration 2.0 plans with technical stakeholders. [4] 🖂
• Initial Community Configuration design ideas have been shared and discussed with community members.
• A basic Community Configuration 2.0 demo is released on ToolForge.
• Developers can find some initial proof of concept code shared on gitlab.

Mentorship

When a mentor marked themselves as "Away", they were not getting their name assigned to new accounts when they returned. This has been fixed. [5]

We improved the message received by newcomers when their mentor quits, to reduce confusion. [6]

We worked on ensuring that all mentees are assigned to an active mentor. This required reassigning mentees with no mentors to a new mentor. We paused this as the clean-up script confused some editors. We will resume it when the identified blockers are resolved. [7]

It is now possible to create an Abuse Filter to prevent one user from signing up as a mentor. [8]

Yesterday, I was doing some vandalism patrol and I made a bunch of mistakes reverting edits that didn't look like good faith edits but in fact were. I've been feeling a bit discouraged and decided to give patrol a rest to stop making further mistakes. However, your essay on mistakes gave me hope for my future on Wikipedia. I just thought you would like to know that that essay is quite helpful. Also, how are you able to make GAs and FAs? Thanks for the kind words @HistoryTheorist! They mean a lot and I'm glad that little essay gets some readership.

A good and featured article are made just like any other article except you got to do a really stinking good job at it. Writing the article well and arranging the words in the best way, free of grammatical errors. Properly sourcing everything to the highest quality of reliable sources. ensuring comprehensiveness and accuracy. Once you have achieved this you submit the article for review to get second opinions: good articles only have one reviewer, and featured articles have at the very least three, plus a source reviewer, image reviewer, and if it's your first time, a spot-check reviewer. Featured articles should be front page worthy, hence why those bad boys go through a lot.

Good articles are usually simple, and if you "finish" an article thinking it's the best you can do than it most likely is and will pass a good article review. Of course stuff will be caught by others, especially my work; see this review of mine where my work is bashed by linguistic genius IceWelder. I really would have never noticed any of that stuff!

The quality and difficulty difference between a good article and a featured article is massive. Here's the good article review of my second FA Paper Mario, and at the time the article looked like this. Compare that to the humongous featured article review that resulted in what the article is right now.

Haha, yeah, the AI had a lot of trouble figuring out how to make the spheres, and only about half the images it generated had them properly interlocking. I discarded some portion of those, but in this case I liked everything else about the image enough that I kept it. I've recently created an article for the German politician Eduard von Möller (1814-1880). He had a page in German which I based it off of through translation. You can find the German version here. An odd edit on Full-face diving mask

Hi Panini! I found an edit which seemed quite odd.

I have just made an edit to fix some wording and restore the accidentally deleted gallery of iamges, but there's the rest of the problems:

• A file used as part of the edit has been marked as a potential copyright violation
• An image got replaced with a new one (see line 17 on [9]), but due to the nature of the edit, I have doubts on the licensing. (Left untouched).
• The style of writing in the new paragraphs is very promotional and not cited. (Added {{promotion-inline}} and {{Citation needed}} to the paragraphs)
• The edit was marked minor, but definitely does not qualify as a minor edit.

I could attempt to fix the problems myself, but it's very late right now and I'd like some further advice on the edit before proceeding. JacksonChen666 (talk) 00:11, 20 January 2024 (UTC)

The article is likely referred to as Aurangabad in the title because of common name rule; this means that if an article has an official name but is more commonly known as something else by the general public, we should use the common name for easier searching. Per WP:TOPIC, it's best to keep the articles discussing the topics directly relating to them; in this case mentioning a square in the context of a very large city is too specific for Worcester, as if we gave every street the same treatment it would be very long. The 2024 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with 135 participants. This is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2017.

Our current leader is newcomer Generalissima (submissions), who has one FA on John Littlejohn (preacher) and 10 GAs and 12 DYKs mostly on New Zealand coinage and Inuit figures. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

The general rule of thumb is if you were the one who took it, it's free, but if you are using the image from online, it is likely not free. Determine which of these paths best fits the image you wish to upload.

Once you select an option, all that's left is following the steps that give proper the image its proper credits and license. WikiCup 2024 March newsletter

The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.

The following scorers in Round 1 all scored more than 300 points:

• Generalissima (submissions), who has 916 points mostly from one FA on John Littlejohn (preacher), 15 GAs, and 16 DYKs on a variety of topics including New Zealand coinage and Inuit figures, in addition to seven reviews
• Vami_IV (submissions), who has 790 points from two FAs on Felix M. Warburg House and Doom (2016 video game), two GAs, one DYK, and 11 reviews
• AirshipJungleman29 (submissions), who has 580 points from one FA on Hö'elün, two GAs on Mongolia-related articles, two DYKs, and five reviews
• Sammi Brie (submissions), who has 420 points mostly from nine GAs and seven DYKs on television and radio stations
• MaranoFan (submissions), who has 351 points from one FA on Holidays (Meghan Trainor song), a nine-article FT on 30 (album), and three DYKs
• Skyshifter (submissions), who has 345 points from one FA on OneShot, one DYK and two reviews

In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to Vami_IV (submissions), who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.

Hey @QuicoleJR, while I have joked about her peeing-in-plants problem before, it had become too much to handle as she now uncontrollably peed everywhere in the house; carpet corners, the laundry room, open drawers, clothes, etc. It is not an issue we were able to handle ourselves at this time, and although it's not too big of an issue if handled properly, two cats has shown to be too much for us right now and this was the final nail in the coffin. WikiCup 2024 April newsletter

We are approaching the end of the 2024 WikiCup's second round, with a little over two weeks remaining. Currently, contestants must score at least 105 points to progress to the third round.

Our current top scorers are as follows:

• Sammi Brie (submissions) with 642 points, mostly from 11 GAs about radio and television;
• voorts (submissions) with 530 points, mostly from two FAs (Well he would, wouldn't he? and Cora Agnes Benneson) and three GAs;
• Generalissima (submissions) with 523 points, mostly from 11 GAs about coinage and history;
• SounderBruce (submissions) with 497 points, mostly from a FA about the 2020 season of the soccer club Seattle Sounders FC and two GAs;
• Tamzin (submissions) with 410 points, mostly from a FA about the drink Capri-Sun and three GAs;
• Kusma (submissions) with 330 points, mostly from a FA about the English botanist Anna Blackburne and a GA.

Competitors may submit work for the second round until the end of 28 April, and the third round starts 1 May. Remember that only competitors with the top 32 scores will make it through to the third round. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs. As a reminder, competitors are strictly prohibited from gaming Wikipedia policies or processes to receive more points.
