Hill has done this here so we're all good. Perfect. The Rambling Man (talk) 22:05, 16 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. Hill has no place here, he's no longer welcome anywhere near me or my talkpage, especially after his egregious personal attack which was "allowed" by an admin under good faith! Hill, take your vitriol elsewhere, no-one's interested. The Rambling Man (talk) 22:14, 16 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

TFL notification

Hi TRM. Laureus World Sports Award for Sportswoman of the Year is scheduled to appear in TFL on March 16. The blurb is here, for you to tweak as desired. Cheers. Giants2008 (Talk) 03:37, 17 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hey TRM. I appreciate your reviewing of the article I made, and I accept as well that the tone may need to be altered in the match section. Could I kindly ask, though, that you inform me if you add another tag like this to an article I have written, however? I only ask as that article was going through DYK at the time and had in fact been approved for processing a day before you added the tag in, and because that tag was on the article (and because I had no idea it was there to do anything about it) it was subsequently kicked out of the process while it was sat in the queue as the next up for putting in, again with no warning to me. Consequently I had to spend a good 20 or 30 minutes today trying to work out why I had a message from DYKBot congratulating me for getting an article on the DYK on the Main Page, but with the Main Page showing no evidence whatsoever of it being there. Falastur2 Talk 13:29, 17 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Do you not have it on your watchlist? I review dozens of articles per day so don't have time to tell principal editors about every edit I make or tag I add. Sorry about that. The Rambling Man (talk) 14:15, 17 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

On 18 February 2018, In the news was updated with an item that involved the article Iran Aseman Airlines Flight 3704, which you nominated. If you know of another recently created or updated article suitable for inclusion in ITN, please suggest it on the candidates page. The Rambling Man (talk) 14:24, 18 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Enjoy it? --Dweller (talk) Become old fashioned! 13:30, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

torn. It's one of those things that a win was always going to be best for us in the short term, but a defeat would have probably seen the back of McCarthy, which can only benefit us in the longer term. A draw did nothing for any of us. The Rambling Man (talk) 13:37, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Pretty sensible response. MM is just so odd. His behaviour after your goal, the nonsense he spouted in the press conference and then the very hard to believe denial that he was swearing at your fans when you scored... --Dweller (talk) Become old fashioned! 16:45, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

TBR 2018

The 2018 race seems to be branded simply as "The Boat Race 2018", consisting of "The Men's Boat Race" and the "The Women's Boat Race". Wondering if the title of the 2018 article should be "The Boat Race 2018"? Whizz40 (talk) 13:09, 20 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I saw that. It may well need to be moved. There's no rush, let's see what other reliable third-party sources do about it. The Rambling Man (talk) 13:10, 20 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Could you take a look?

I've been expanding My Father My King, which I wrote (well, expanded from a stub) seven years ago, with a view at ending up at GA eventually. If you've got a moment, could you cast your eye over it and let me know what needs fixing? Cheers, Black Kite (talk) 14:54, 20 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I will endeavour to get it to it tonight. Cheers. The Rambling Man (talk) 15:05, 20 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Black Kite looks good, I made a couple of tiny changes, feel free to remove as you see fit. One thing that irks, you have "it was the finale of all six of the band's 20th anniversary shows" in the lead, but not in the body, I know it's GA you're pitching at, but nevertheless, we shouldn't be seeing material in the lead that isn't mentioned and expanded upon in the main part of the article. Otherwise, there's nothing wrong at all here, and I'd pass it in a flash. The Rambling Man (talk) 20:29, 20 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot. I'm trying to find a source, other than setlist.fm, for that quote about the 20th anniversary shows, but if I can't find one I'll just ditch it, it's not that important. Cheers again, Black Kite (talk) 22:03, 20 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Black Kite No worries. I'm afraid it'll take a few months before someone pulls it off the GAN queue unless you ask someone very kind like Ritchie333 who's interested in this kind of topic to pluck it from GAN obscurity... Nominate it now and then worry about the details in due course. Good luck. The Rambling Man (talk) 22:05, 20 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

A beer for you!

Thanks for all of our help with the DJ White Article and reminding me of an important lesson of who the target audience is. I had been following you after the whole ANI stuff a while back, and your work is truly invaluable to DYK. Church Talk 20:13, 20 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Cheers Church, no problem. Always happy to work with editors conducive to a world view and for ideas on improvement. Sadly we seem to be running short of them, so please keep up your good work. The Rambling Man (talk) 20:15, 20 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

DYK Figure 5 in Gold

I am upset that the DYK ran without an image. Replacing the photo of the stamp with an image of the painting would have been much better. David notMD (talk) 09:44, 21 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I know you are upset. I'm sorry it happened that way. It's a shame I couldn't do anything to help you. The Rambling Man (talk) 09:45, 21 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It's not TRM's fault. TRM was right to raise the issue, as it looks like the stamp is copyrighted in the US. But it wasn't him who decided to run the hook without an image. Joseph2302 (talk) 11:45, 21 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't raise the issue, but I did agree with swapping the image of the stamp out for the image of the painting. Jayron32 did it his own way. The Rambling Man (talk) 11:46, 21 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
David notMD, take another look at the main page (you may need to clear your cache)... The Rambling Man (talk) 12:50, 21 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Painting a favorite with my family, so I had enjoyed doing the 5X expansion about it. David notMD (talk) 13:08, 21 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
No worries. The Rambling Man (talk) 13:15, 21 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

For stepping up and responding to my request for an expedited DYK review just after I had made some personal remarks about you in another DYK discussion, yet another reminder that "Grace makes beauty out of ugly things ..." Daniel Case (talk) 06:17, 23 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

And I should append to that an apology for my intemperance in that discussion. I perhaps should explain that my time has been rather fragmented this week since my son is home from school for his winter vacation week and, in addition to using the computer a lot himself, he has wanted to do things with me outside the house, and we've also had some additional errands to run. So that's a large part of the reason I was neither able to fix the issues with that one article nor thank you earlier for your review ... long hours have gone by without my being available to spend my life on Wikipedia like I sometimes would like . Daniel Case (talk) 06:17, 23 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

No worries, and thanks. I have two kids under five, so I know how it goes. Let's get this DYK passed in time for your requested date! The Rambling Man (talk) 08:20, 23 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

1900s

An anon has been adding.

It's the last year of the 1900s.

Aside from never being formatted in a way which fails to damage the display, 1900s needs to be linked to avoid confusion. The best I could do is:

It is the last year of the 1900s.

but that seems to violate WP:EGG. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 07:11, 1 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Until User:The Rambling Man restored it, the anon was the only person to add it, and it's been removed by at least 4 editors. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 07:13, 1 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Arthur Rubin the point here is that you are flagrantly abusing Twinkle by giving misleading and incorrect edit summaries to cover your edits. Stop doing that or we will need to remove Twinkle from you. The Rambling Man (talk) 07:18, 1 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Archiving sources

I support archiving sources but there is really no point when they are behind a paywall as Internet Archive can't read them. I also think you should be adding these links at the end of the reference after the retrieved date as otherwise it disrupts the logical flow of the ref. Thanks. Philafrenzy (talk) 13:31, 1 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Philafrenzy Please take any complaints to the people who maintain the script which is linked to on every single article's history page. Also, I imagine if you were using correct templates for citations, then the order in which the archive dates etc are added is controlled by the template. If you have issues with that, please discuss it at the relevant template talk page. Also, could you please place messages here in the right location in future? Thanks. The Rambling Man (talk) 13:36, 1 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Another option would be not to use it if it doesn't work very well, and hand archive the sources that are likely to go dead, it doesn't take long. On Columbine Cup that is none of them actually, though I have left the archiving on the museum pages even though of doubtful value. Philafrenzy (talk) 13:45, 1 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It works just fine, cheers. The Rambling Man (talk) 13:46, 1 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

EC ping

Am working on the archive links of the Harris article, please be patient, I had to revert to more easily work on the originals, but will get there. The bot doesn't always go to the right links Montanabw(talk) 17:14, 1 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Montanabw, long time no speak, hope you're ok? Patience installed, now paused. The Rambling Man (talk) 17:46, 1 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. No link to anything saying this has to be done for DYK, but it's good practice and as I said elsewhere, I've been thanked 100 times more frequently than complained at for using the tool which is accredited by WMF and linked to on the history of all six million articles here. I run the tool on every article I review on a daily basis, that could be ten or twelve or thirty or forty, depending on what I get up to. If there are specific complaints with the performance of the script, those I'm sure can be corrected for a better performance in the future, I'm sure you all have addressed such complaints to the WMF for implementation? The Rambling Man (talk) 17:54, 1 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
P.P.S. Montanabw, all of those archive links check out for me, I checked them all out, which ones don't work for you? The Rambling Man (talk) 18:02, 1 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like we sorted it out over at my talk. One bad one. As I said there, I have mixed feelings; seeing my older articles have issues with deadlinks or links archived behind paywalls and inaccessible, I do have some sympathy with the notion of doing it sooner rather than later, but at the same time, it seems awkward to do it right away because the archived links are slower to load. Montanabw(talk) 21:34, 1 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Time and tide. I live in a remote village with basically no broadband. I loaded the page fine before, and after, my edit. We'll all learn to cope, and future-proofing is essential. The Rambling Man (talk) 21:38, 1 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Superfluous archiving on Brockton (MBTA station)

I reverted your addition of archives to stable live links on Brockton (MBTA station) - and will continue to do so - for several reasons:

  • It's simply not necessary. IA crawls all Wikipedia sources and external links in a frequent bases, so the fully automated IABot will rescue any actual dead links. Preemptive archiving is only useful in cases where the source is not stable, frequently changes, or needs special attention (like the Providence Journal, which doesn't work properly with IA). Mass-adding archives manually is just one more watchlist item for others to scroll past.
  • It makes the article longer and harder to edit. It increases the length of the references section by about one-quarter - again, more scrolling for no reason. Worse, it makes the raw wikitext more unwieldy and more confusing for new editors.
  • The script has enough bugs that it should not be used on a publicly visible article. It archived multiple subscription-only sources, where the archive cannot be used to access the content. It also used a significantly old archive for one source. While I understand that you do not maintain this script, you should not be using it if it produces this many errors.

I applaud you for your efforts to combat link rot, but massive preemptive archiving in this manner is not the proper way to go about it. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 19:56, 2 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Pi.1415926535 I applaud you for you resistance to change, but blame WMF for putting the tool on 6 million pages, if you don't like it, talk to them. Your bullet points are pretty much all saying the same thing, albeit with different levels of detail, and you probably, by now, realise that all articles on Wikipedia are "publicly visible". I suggest you take this up with WMF as I'll continue to use the script (which you've already noted runs all the time anyway). Have a great weekend! The Rambling Man (talk) 20:09, 2 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
