Revision as of 02:24, 29 January 2009

This is a page for requesting tasks to be done by bots per the bot policy. This is an appropriate place to put ideas for uncontroversial bot tasks, to get early feedback on ideas for bot tasks (controversial or not), and to seek bot operators for bot tasks. Consensus-building discussions requiring large community input (such as request for comments) should normally be held at WP:VPPROP or other relevant pages (such as a WikiProject's talk page).

You can check the "Commonly Requested Bots" box above to see if a suitable bot already exists for the task you have in mind. If you have a question about a particular bot, contact the bot operator directly via their talk page or the bot's talk page. If a bot is acting improperly, follow the guidance outlined in WP:BOTISSUE. For broader issues and general discussion about bots, see the bot noticeboard.

Before making a request, please see the list of frequently denied bots, either because they are too complicated to program, or do not have consensus from the Wikipedia community. If you are requesting that a template (such as a WikiProject banner) is added to all pages in a particular category, please be careful to check the category tree for any unwanted subcategories. It is best to give a complete list of categories that should be worked through individually, rather than one category to be analyzed recursively (see example difference).

Alternatives to bot requests

Note to bot operators: The {{BOTREQ}} template can be used to give common responses, and make it easier to keep track of the task's current status. If you complete a request, note that you did with {{BOTREQ|done}}, and archive the request after a few days (WP:1CA is useful here).

Please add your bot requests to the bottom of this page.

Bot tagging for WP:FILM

Is it possible to have a bot run through all subcategories of Category:Films by year (excluding Category:The Wizard of Oz (1939 film), Category:Dragnet, Category:Dragnet episodes, Category:Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Category:Sholay, Category:Donnie Darko, Category:Chak De India, Category:Enchanted (film) and Category:Songs from Enchanted) and ensure that all articles have the {{Film}} project banner on their talk page, keeping all existing assessments and other parameters where they currently exist?

In addition, can the bot add the appropriate task force parameters to the banner in the following categories:

I made this proposal at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Films#Bot tagging articles for WP:FILM last week, where it met with approval. Let me know if you need anything else, this is my first such request here. :) PC78 (talk) 23:07, 7 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I see Legobot did a run on this earlier today. I see that only articles starting with A and B were tagged; will the bot therefore be doing this in stages, rather than a single sweep? PC78 (talk) 19:41, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It hit an error while running so it only got to the B's. I have restarted it, so it should start going again. LegoKontribsTalkM 05:03, 23 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Mixed drink job

Could some one please change all of the articles that are classified under Category:Cocktails and change them so that they fall under Category:Mixed drinks? If they already have the mixed drink cat on them, just delete the cocktails cat. For now leave please the sub-categories alone.

There are about 65 articles under that cat.

Can someone make a bot to use WebCite to archive URLs automatically

This website allows free archiving of web pages, so that link rot doesn't make a reference unusable. They've actually thought of doing this themselveshere, but I bet someone here could get it done a lot faster. They talk about doing it as the refs are added, but a really smart bot might even be able to do it for some preexisting refs. - Peregrine Fisher (talk) (contribs) 14:38, 21 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds like a good idea actually and not hard to code I'd guess :-) SoWhy 14:51, 21 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This idea was actually already on my "possible to-do list" (I found the idea in the archives. However, if someone really wants to do it I'll gladly defer. --ThaddeusB (talk) 04:39, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Whoever does it will be my, and Wikipedia's, hero. Here's your big chance. I just hope we don't crash their servers. - Peregrine Fisher (talk) (contribs) 04:40, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
As long it takes the link from the |url=http://www.foobar.com of the various templates, and add |archiveurl=http://archive.foobar.com (or similar) entry to existing template, and leave urls not found in templates alone, I'm find with that.Headbomb {ταλκκοντριβςWP Physics} 05:31, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The bot is going to have to talk to webcitation.com a little bit, and check that the page is correctly created. According to one of their pages, about 10% of currently active web pages don't allow themselves to be archived. That's for newly added cites. For older pages, things like 404 pages would have to be checked for. Old pages is much more complicated. We should probably just start with new ones, unless someone knows how the web works really well. - Peregrine Fisher (talk) (contribs) 05:37, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

How is this different than the Wayback machine and {{Wayback}}?

It's a similar principle, but executed differently.

Services such as the Internet Archive (Wayback Machine) or Google archive Internet documents in a shotgun-approach by a crawler, not focussing on academic references. The caching process cannot be initiated by authors, editors, or publishers wanting to archive a specific web reference as they saw it on a specific date when they quoted it. In contrast, WebCite® is a tool specifically designed to be used by authors, readers, editors and publishers of scholarly material, allowing them to permanently archive cited Internet references.

— WebCite FAQ
Since it caches on demand (except for opted out sites) it is more useful for Wikipedia purposes. --ThaddeusB (talk) 02:36, 23 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, it's cool. Exactly the site that we cite can be archived, almost every time. Wayback misses a ton, and google clears their cache after not long. - Peregrine Fisher (talk) (contribs) 02:48, 23 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have decided to take on this task. Since this bot would be altering a huge number of pages, I am going to seek community approval for this task. I am writing up a proposal now and will post a link to it here when I'm ready (likely sometime tomorrow). This task is actually more involved than one might think. Since I've already been thinking it through the past few days, I think I am probably the most qualified to take on the task. --ThaddeusB (talk) 04:09, 23 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Super awesome. Thanks. I think this will really help WP. Onet thing I thought of (you too, probably) is that we could add archived versions as we go. For the older ones, we (you) could put them on the talk page. Editors could then decide if it still backs up what the original ref did, and add it manually. Or maybe there's a better way. - Peregrine Fisher (talk) (contribs) 04:28, 23 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
So if I understand correctly, this bot would check for new ref (using a citation template), get WebCite to archive it, then make a link of it using |archiveurl=... LegoKontribsTalkM 05:11, 23 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That's the general idea. The only thing that kinda worries me is that archiveurl puts its link first, and moves the original link towards the end. This makes sense because up till now, you only used archiveurl with dead links. In this case, the better link is the original unless (until) it goes dead. Maybe a webciteurl field will have to be added to the citation templates. I don't know. - Peregrine Fisher (talk) (contribs) 05:18, 23 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
We could have the webcite link in a dummy param (|webcite= perhaps) and if the site goes down, an editor just fills in the archive info from the webcite param. Foxy Loxy Pounce! 10:27, 23 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have filled a BRFA for this bot. Please direct any further comments there. Thank you! --ThaddeusB (talk) 04:06, 24 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Bot needed to fix Year in Baseball template please

Hello. See Template talk:Year in baseball#suggestion. We need a bot that can replace the sidebar {{Year in baseball}} with: 1) {{Year in baseball top}}; and 2) at the bottom of the page the new footer {{Year in baseball}}. This would be done on all of the "[YEAR] in baseball" articles, about 140 or so pages. Right before this is done, the code from the talk page needs to be copied onto the template so the current sidebar template becomes a navbox. Any takers? If so, please follow up at the talk page Template talk:Year in baseball#suggestion. Rgrds. --Tombstone (talk) 15:16, 21 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

ClueBot number

I am a new user at Wikipedia.

Before I realized how to use Wikipedia properly by using the sandbox, I uploaded a page which contained numerous errors.

I then edited using sandbox and when I tried to upload the corrected version I was issued a ClueBot number because it appeared as if I were vandalizing the site.

My Clue Bot number is 539482 and my user name is Hdrosenberg. How do I go about removing the erroneous page and replacing it with the correct one?

thank you,

Hit-counting

Hi! The Dungeons & Dragons WikiProject uses this page to keep track of what our most popular articles are so that we can try to work on them in that order. It takes some time to update them by hand, though, and we can't really check all of the project's articles. Could a bot could be designed to output such a table, with article names, hits, and quality, on a monthly basis? It would be great if it could check all of the articles in Category:All Dungeons & Dragons articles, as well as checking redirects and adding them in. I know that it's probably not possible or would be to much coding to be worth it, but I thought I'd ask. Thanks! -Drilnoth (talk) 03:31, 23 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I have a bot that does that, I'll add your project to the list. Mr.Z-man 03:33, 23 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Really? Great! Redirects and everything? -Drilnoth (talk) 03:39, 23 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Oh... also, the linked-to category categorizes talk pages by banner. Does that work? -Drilnoth (talk) 03:42, 23 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately, there's no real efficient way to get all the redirects to all the pages in a category, short of doing an API query for every single page (currently, for all projects the bot does, is about 115000). It'll get redirects from alternate capitalization, but that's it. Mr.Z-man 03:51, 23 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Okay; that makes sense. -Drilnoth (talk) 04:00, 23 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Interwiki's for AWB Pages

Anyone with interwiki bot approval fancy updating all the en.wp AWB IW links please?

in the template {{Infobox Television film}}, i would like make it so that that filename only is required when adding images. this is easily accomplished by swapping:

this:

CURRENT
{{#if: {{{image|<noinclude>-</noinclude>}}} |
{{!}} style="text-align: center;" colspan="2"
{{!}} {{{image}}} {{#if: {{{caption|<noinclude>-</noinclude>}}}
| <br/><span style="font-size: 95%; line-height:1.5em;">{{{caption}}}</span> }}

with this:

NEW
{{#if:{{{image|}}}|
{{!}} style="font-size: 95%; line-height:1.5em; text-align: center;" colspan="2"
{{!}} [[File:{{{image}}}|{{#if:{{{image_size|}}}|<!--then:-->{{px|{{{image_size}}} }}
|<!--else:-->220px}}|]] {{#if:{{{caption|}}}|<br />{{{caption}}}}}

however, each article (>500) using this template will need to be gleaned of the wiki markup coding in that field.

from this:

| image     = [[file:example.jpg|220px]]

to this:

| image     = example.jpg
| imagesize = 220px

.....submitted for your approval. --emerson7 23:00, 23 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Text replacement

I need a particular string of text replaced, I have been referencing a book across many articles, copy and pasting it each time, and it turns out I misspelt the authors name. I need "S.E. Doorman and R.G. Henderson" replaced by "S.E. Dornan and R.G. Henderson" - per http://catalogue.nla.gov.au/Record/2937646

Wongm (talk) 02:15, 24 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If a botop doesn't get to this ahead of time, AWB will do find-and-replace very easily. It would aslo be helpful to know what articles you added the text to, or when you started adding the names; but an overall search should turn up most/all of it. §hepTalk 02:18, 24 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Need a bot to update a table

I need a bot to update this table on a monthly basis. It's not too hard to do by hand, but then it's even easier for a bot. :) The required information for the quality/importance columns can just be copied directly from here. The AfD columns require that the bot parse the archive of this page for the previous month and count the number of bullets in the lists (the "*" character), as well as the number of instances of the words "Delete", "Redirected", "Keep" and "Merged". Thanks! SharkD (talk) 05:19, 24 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Unless someone has an already existing bot that can handle this, I will be happy to incorporate this request into WikiStatsBOT. --ThaddeusB (talk) 06:25, 24 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks very much! The final structure of the table has not been finalized: a third fourth set of statistics may appear shortly. However, none of the existing columns will be removed; so if you want to start figuring out how to create the bot, go ahead. SharkD (talk) 11:28, 25 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I added the fourth set of statistics. The stats can be gotten from here. You just need to enter the correct page link and date and then copy the total. SharkD (talk) 11:58, 25 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I removed them again since they're duplicates of information that appears in another page already. SharkD (talk) 20:00, 26 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Changing the format of an infobox

Hello, I would like to change the format of {{Infobox Taiwan Station}}. The current template codes on each page are like this:

{{Infobox_Taiwan_Station|

ImageCaption=|
Style=|
Place=|
Coordinates=|
Code=|
Operator=|
Line=|
StartDate=|
RouteType=|
TraLevel=|
TraElecCode=|
TraStartLocal=|
TraMile=‎|
}}

It is very disorganized. Based on other station infoboxes, I propose to change to this: (Note: The name of the infobox is changed too.)

{{Infobox Taiwan station
| title =
| en-title =
| image = example.jpg
| image_size = 250px
| image_caption =
| type =
| address =
| coordinates = {{coord||}}
| code =
| operator =
| line =
| opened =
| tra_level =
| tra_code =
| tra_start =
| tra_mileage =
}}

Notice subtitles and route type are deleted because they are mostly unnecessary. Several names are replaced in order. Thanks, waiting for approval...impactF=check this 05:38, 25 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Pride events

Is there a bot that can place move requests on every article in a template? Can about change all the links from Kveta Peschke to Květa Peschke please, as this is her correct spelling. There might be 100s more similar to this requests, for Czech names, so maybe I will have to make a bot myself. --Voletyvole (talk) 11:28, 25 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I think (though I've been over-ruled many a time) that it might fall foul of WP:R#NOTBROKEN, but I'm sure a more experience bot writer would give you a better answer. - Jarry1250 (t, c) 11:41, 25 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Declined Not a good task for a bot.: Jarry is right, it's usually not a good idea to make hundreds of edits to bypass a redirect, as it has little benefit. As long as it's an accepted alternate spelling updating the links doesn't really seem necessary here. Richard0612 12:00, 25 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
In addition, Kveta Peschke is by far the most common spelling in English sources so the article should probably be moved to that per Wikipedia:Naming conventions (use English). PrimeHunter (talk) 12:29, 25 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have added a rule to RegExTypoFix to make the change from "Kveta Peschke" to "Květa Peschke" here. We already have several similar rules to correct foreign names, so I don't see any reason not to add this one to the list. --ThaddeusB (talk) 16:39, 25 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Will you be fed up if I add a humungous bunch of Czechslovak and Polish (and other Slav) names to this AWB Typos list? I have made an offline list, featuring a shed load thus. I beg your pardon if this isn't quite the right place to ask (n00b errors, ya know dudes, what can y'all do?) Cheers 4 the links though. --Voletyvole (talk) 21:43, 25 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I personally wouldn't mind, but there are those that feel the list shouldn't be clogged with "worthless entries." As long as the error occurs at least 5-10 times on Wikipedia its probably safe to add. --ThaddeusB (talk) 02:28, 26 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
This would be better than the first suggestion as (a) it could fix several misspellings per edit and (b) it would also fix ones which are not part of a link. — CharlotteWebb 02:52, 26 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Need another bot to update a different table

I need a bot to update the tables in this page. The information can be gotton using the article traffic statistics tool. There's also a backlog of about 8 months that would need to be filled on the bot's first run. If the bot could also update the graphs it would be doubleplusgood. Ideally I would like the graphs to be SVG images instead of PNG, but I'm not real sure how this would be accomplished. Thanks! SharkD (talk) 20:02, 26 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Put stub template on stub articles

Can anyone put {{Taiwan-film-stub}} and replace {{Taiwan-stub}} and {{Film-stub}} on Taiwanese film stubs? The list is here. Thanks! :)

Can anyone do the request I had above??? impactF=check this 00:32, 27 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You might want to also try requesting this over at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting, since I think that's one of the reasons why the project exists. SharkD (talk) 01:49, 27 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I did. We had a consensus to create the stub and stub category. Here. Thanks for concerning. impactF=check this 01:59, 27 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
This is probably a task better suited for AWB. You can request it be done by someone with AWB here. --ThaddeusB (talk) 05:01, 27 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject Triathlon banner tagging

Could we get the WikiProject Triathlon banner (Template:WP Triathlon) on all articles in Category:Triathlon and Category:Duathlon and all subcategories of both (I have checked for exceptions, but there are none). A number of articles have already been tagged. Thanks. Yboy83 (talk) 09:42, 28 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Swiss Presidents

Please update {{Swiss Presidents}} to {{Presidents of the Swiss Confederation}} as according to Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:Swiss_Presidents about 80 articles of former presidents still use the old name template, which causes problems, like these articles still showing up at the disambiguation Special:WhatLinksHere/Eduard_Müller for some reason, instead at the proper article Special:WhatLinksHere/Eduard_Müller_(Swiss_politician). The admin that had made the move a year ago had not bothered to fix this. -- Matthead  Discuß   22:25, 28 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
