Today's featured list submissions

This star symbolizes the featured content on Wikipedia.
This star symbolizes the featured content on Wikipedia.

Lists suggested here must be featured lists that have not previously appeared on the main page.

Today's featured list launched in June 2011, initially on each Monday. In January 2014 it was agreed to expand to appear twice a week. The lists will be selected by the FL director, based on the consensus of the community.

To submit a list for main page consideration, you simply need to draft a short summary of the list, in approximately 1000 characters, along with a relevant image from the list itself, using the template provided below. Should you need any assistance using the template, feel free to ask for help on the talk page. If you are nominating a list submitted by someone else, consider notifying the significant contributor(s) with {{subst:tfln|NAME OF LIST}} ~~~~

The community will review submissions, and suggest improvements where appropriate. If a blurb receives broad support, and there are no actionable objections, one of the directors will confirm that it has been accepted for main page submission. Please note there should be no more than fifteen nominations listed here at any one time.

In rare circumstances, the directors reserve the right to exclude a list from main page consideration, a practice consistent with other main page sections such as Today's featured article and Picture of the day. Should this ever happen, a detailed explanation will be given.

Step-by-step guide to submitting a list

  1. Select a featured list.
  2. Click here to start a new section at the bottom of this page.
  3. Copy and paste the following, if it has not automatically appeared:
    {{TFLcontent
    |image=
    |size=125x125px
    |title=
    |alt=
    |blurb=

    |topic2=
    |link=
    }}
  4. Write a 1-paragraph blurb of approximately 1000 characters alongside |blurb=. Don't worry about getting the character count exact: there is considerable flexibility, and we can always adapt it if necessary.
  5. Add the image file name after |image=.
  6. Add a caption alongside |title=.
  7. Write some alt text alongside |alt=, for those who are unable to view images.
  8. Type the name of the list after |link= without the square brackets ([[ and ]]).
  9. If the list is part of one (or two) Featured topics (NB not "good topics"), add the name(s) of the topics without square brackets after |topic1= and |topic2=.
  10. Sign your name with four tildes (~~~~) at the very bottom of the section.
  11. For nominations intended for a specific date, consider adding the list to this table for increased exposure. These dates are not set in stone; please don't hesitate to nominate a list even if another has already been suggested on the day you had in mind.

Rudolph Valentino's film career started with his appearance as an uncredited extra in My Official Wife (1914), although this is now a lost film. The Italian-born Valentino appeared in several films in a minor role until 1921. He got his major break when he appeared in the role of Julio in The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse and he went on to play leading roles in fourteen films as a romantic figure. All the films in which he appeared were silent; those in which he played a romantic role within the action genre were the more successful at the box office including The Sheik (1921) and his final two works The Eagle (1925) and The Son of the Sheik (1926). Valentino died suddenly of peritonitis in August 1926, at the age of 31. The subsequent extensive media coverage, turned his funeral into a national event. Two of Valentino's films, The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse and The Son of the Sheik have been inducted into the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress. (Full list...)

Comment: happy for this to be left until early next year if you want, given Pitt's nomination about and other filmography lists running on the main page. Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 08:53, 6 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Looking ahead, Valentino's birthday is on May 6, a Friday. If you're willing to wait until next year, that is one date for consideration. Giants2008 (Talk) 00:25, 10 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Perfect. It'll give a little space for the others to appear without overcrowding the schedule. Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 10:16, 10 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

List of Alamo defenders

Cathedral of San Fernando sarcophagus with images of Travis, Bowie and Crockett

Identifying the Alamo defenders began immediately after the 1836 battle. Tejanos (Mexicans born in Texas) and American colonists held off the Mexican army for two weeks before the March 6 siege brought death to all 212 still inside. Of the 256 defenders, one previously escaped and 43 were either out scouting, or left several days earlier by taking advantage of General Santa Anna's amnesty offer to Tejanos inside the mission. The bodies, including William B. Travis, James Bowie and Davy Crockett, were cremated on pyres and abandoned. Alamo scout Juan Seguín was on a run that day, and a year later officiated at the collection and burial of those ashes at a site later forgotten. Remains thought to be those of the Alamo defenders were discovered at the Cathedral of San Fernando during the Texas 1936 centennial and re-interred in a marble sarcophagus. (Full list...)

  • Comment Would it be possible to hold this to run the first week of March 2016, the 180th anniversary of the battle? I suggest March 4. — Maile (talk) 15:57, 16 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
    • It certainly is possible. That looks like a date with great relevance for the list. Giants2008 (Talk) 00:38, 17 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

List of ant subfamilies

Formica rufa, one of the seventeen species of ants described by Linnaeus (1758) in his Systema Naturae
Formica rufa, one of the seventeen species of ants described by Linnaeus (1758) in his Systema Naturae

Twenty ant subfamilies are currently recognized, of which sixteen contain extant taxa, while four are exclusively fossil. Ants (family Formicidae) first arose during the mid-Cretaceous, more than 100 million years ago, associated with the rise of flowering plants and an increase in forest ground litter. They have come to occupy virtually all major terrestrial habitats, with the exception of tundra and cold ever-wet forests, and are the most species-rich of all social insects, with more than 12,000 described species and many others awaiting description. In volume 1 of Systema Naturae, Linnaeus (1758) described seventeen species of ants (F. rufa pictured), all of which he placed in the single genus Formica. Within a few decades additional genera had been recognized, and this trend continued in the ensuing years, together with the development of a more complex hierarchical classification in which genera were apportioned among subfamilies and tribes. The ant species described by Linnaeus are now dispersed in eleven different genera, belonging to four subfamilies. (Full list...)

68th Academy Awards

Mel Gibson
Mel Gibson

The 68th Academy Awards ceremony, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), honored films released in 1995 and took place on March 25, 1996, at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles, California. During the ceremony, AMPAS presented Academy Awards in 24 categories. The ceremony, televised in the United States by ABC, was produced by Quincy Jones and directed by Jeff Margolis. Actress Whoopi Goldberg hosted the show for the second time, having previously presided over the 66th ceremony in 1994. Braveheart won five awards including Best Picture, the ninth film to do so without any acting nominations, and Best Director for Mel Gibson (pictured). Other winners included Apollo 13, Pocahontas, Restoration, and The Usual Suspects with two awards each. The telecast garnered almost 45 million viewers in the United States. (Full list...)

I would like this list to be posted on February 29 since the 88th Academy Awards are scheduled for February 28 (or February 29 01:38 UTC), and it will have been 20 years since this particular ceremony occurred.

I did some cleanup in your proposed blurb. For the record, I was planning on running an Oscars list on this date if one had not been submitted, as the proposed date makes all the sense in the world for an Academy Awards-related page. Giants2008 (Talk) 02:32, 24 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Arthur Conan Doyle bibliography

Arthur Conan Doyle c. 1904
Arthur Conan Doyle c. 1904

The works of Arthur Conan Doyle include short stories, novels, poems, plays, operettas, non-fiction and pamphlets—the latter on spiritualism and the paranormal. In October 1879 Doyle was still studying for his medical degree when he published his first work—"The Mystery of the Sasassa Valley"—which appeared in Chambers's Journal. In 1897 he published A Study in Scarlet, which appeared in Beeton's Christmas Annual; the story introduced Sherlock Holmes and his friend Dr John Watson. The couple subsequently came to wide public notice in the July 1891 short story "A Scandal in Bohemia" in The Strand Magazine. Doyle, fearful of having his other work overshadowed by his fictional detective, killed his creation off in December 1893, although he later relented and re-introduced the characters; the works make up the Holmes series of stories. Doyle also wrote four full-length Holmes works, as well as adventure novels and nine historical works of fiction, and the adventure series featuring Professor Challenger, who first appeared in The Lost World—both in short stories and novel form. He also wrote four volumes of poetry and a series of stage works. Owing to the close successive deaths of his son and brother, Doyle turned to spiritualism and wrote extensively on the subject. Rafael Nadal has won the most French Opens
Rafael Nadal has won the most French Opens

French Open men's singles champions are crowned at an annual tennis tournament held over two weeks in May and June. Established in 1891 and played since 1928 on outdoor red clay courts at the Stade Roland Garros in Paris, France, the French Open is one of the four Grand Slam tournaments played each year which include the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open. Organised by the Fédération Française de Tennis, the French Open is the second of the four Grand Slam tournaments to be played each year. The winner of the men's singles event receives the Coupe des Mousquetaires, named after The Four Musketeers of French tennis: Jean Borotra, Jacques Brugnon, Henri Cochet, and René Lacoste. Rafael Nadal (pictured) has won the most French Open titles, with nine, and also holds the record for the most consecutive wins in the Open era, with five from 2010 to 2014. French players have won the most French Open men's singles titles, with 38 victories, followed by Spanish (12) and Australian players (11). (Full list...)

Works of Keith Floyd

Keith Floyd's writing and broadcasting career lasted from 1981 until his death in 2009. He began working in the restaurant trade in the late 1960s before opening his bistro in 1971, soon followed by two other outlets. When his business went bankrupt he sailed around the Mediterranean for two years and opened another restaurant in the South of France, which was also a financial failure. He published his first cookbook—Floyd's Food—in 1981, which led to a short recipe slot on the local Radio West station. The popularity of the radio work and Floyd's easy delivery led to a television career that started with Floyd on Fish, broadcast on BBC Television in late 1985. Several series followed and a corresponding book appeared with each series. There were no scripts for the programmes, and Floyd ad-libbed throughout; when he ran out of words, he would sip from an ever-present glass of wine to give him time to create the next line. Floyd also had a one-man show, Floyd Uncorked: The Life of a Bon Viveur. (Full list...)

List of tributaries of Shamokin Creek

Shamokin Creek in Shamokin, Pennsylvania
Shamokin Creek in Shamokin, Pennsylvania

There are 12 named tributaries of Shamokin Creek (pictured), a 32.4-mile (52.1 km) long tributary of the Susquehanna River. Of the 12 tributaries, 11 flow directly into Shamokin Creek. The longest tributaries are Little Shamokin Creek, Carbon Run, North Branch Shamokin Creek, Coal Run, and Millers Run. Many of the upper tributaries of Shamokin Creek are in the Western Middle Anthracite Coalfield and nearly all of the streams in this part of the watershed are impacted by mining, except for Furnace Run. Various mine drainage sites occur in the watersheds of all other streams in the upper Shamokin Creek watershed. None of the tributaries in the lower reaches of the Shamokin Creek watershed are affected by mining. Although the main stem of the creek is designated as a Warmwater Fishery, all of its tributaries are designated as Coldwater Fisheries. Some tributaries, such as North Branch Shamokin Creek and Quaker Run, lack fish life. (Full list...)

Lady Gaga

We have two nominations for the awful Lady Gaga, so I've dropped them into one section for consideration: we will not be able to run both of these in quick succession. - SchroCat (talk) 16:33, 28 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I nominated the list of songs first. It's a bit unfair IMO. Another nomination on the same subject shouldn't be allowed. SchroCat  — Calvin999 12:52, 29 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I would be more than happy if the first list appears on the Main Page as I was also involved in the article. But I believe that the other list (in which I am not involved at all) is more popular and will do well on the front page. I will leave it on Giants to decide. -- Frankie talk 13:51, 29 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I don't really think it's got anything to do with be involved or not. I wouldn't have nominated a list which was on the same subject as someone else had previously, I don't see the point and I was a bit surprised to be really honest :-/. Lots of people know her discography, they are the singles everyone has heard. Not as many people would be familiar with the non-single cuts and their themes. List of songs recorded by Lady Gaga

American singer and songwriter Lady Gaga has recorded material for four studio albums and three extended plays (EP), and has been featured on songs on other artists' respective albums. After signing with Interscope, Gaga began working on her debut album The Fame, which was released in 2008. The album has influences of the 1980s pop music and discusses Gaga's love of fame while also dealing with subjects, such as love, sexuality, money and drugs. Initially intended to be a re-release of her first album, an EP titled The Fame Monster (2009) included eight newly recorded tracks. The EP explores the darker side of fame, describing the differences between them with the yin and yang concept. Gaga's second full-length album Born This Way was released in 2011. Themes include sexuality, religion, freedom, feminism and individualism. Primarily influenced by synthpop and dance-pop, it incorporates musical genres which have not been previously explored by Gaga, such as electronic rock and techno. Gaga's third album Artpop, released in 2013. As executive producer, she enlisted longtime collaborators DJ White Shadow and RedOne, and for the first time Zedd and Madeon. Described as "a celebration and a poetic musical journey", the album revolves around her personal views of fame, love, sex, feminism, self-empowerment, overcoming addiction, and reactions to media scrutiny. It also contains references to Greek and Roman mythology. In 2014, Gaga and Tony Bennett released a collaborative album titled Cheek to Cheek, which consists of jazz standards. (Full list...)
