Secularists[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: manual merge/rename/delete. Keep Category:Israeli secularists. (non-admin closure) Qwerfjkltalk 15:06, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Post-closure note: Category:Turkish secularists was also reinstated on the same grounds as requested by Aybeg at User_talk:Marcocapelle#Secularists. – Fayenatic London 11:51, 9 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: merge the two trees, the difference between "secularists" and "critics of religions" is not clear enough to keep them as separate trees. Conceptually there is a difference, but when reading individual biographies it becomes very blurry. On the other hand, purge subcategories of politicians by political party, Category:Secular Jews and Category:Cultural Muslims. Marcocapelle (talk) 23:12, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Relisting comment: Comments on Place Clichy's nomination?
Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, Qwerfjkltalk 20:10, 28 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Qwerfjkl: My comments were in fact not as drastic as they seem. I believe we have reached consensus on sth like: Delete Category:Arab secularists, merge/rename the others as nominated, which already includes purging political parties. So I'm not sure the relisting is absolutely necessary. @Marcocapelle and Smasongarrison: may confirm or disconfirm. Place Clichy (talk) 10:38, 29 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I know, I'd just like to see if anyone has any further comments; I prefer to err on the side of safety. If no one else comments then I'll close in favour of your suggestion. Qwerfjkltalk 17:04, 29 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Sounds good to me :) Mason (talk) 22:46, 29 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose, at least for the Israeli category. In Israel "secularist" is largely used to refer to politicians who stand for the separation of synagogue and state (and most of the people in the category are politicians whose party has secularism as a policy). This is quite different to being a "critic of religion". Renaming the Israeli category would be particularly absurd given some of the people in the category tree are active practicers of religion, including a few rabbis. Category:Fictional parasites and parasitoids[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: rename to Category:Fictional parasite characters. Because species members would no longer belong in the category, they will be added to a species category instead. (non-admin closure) Qwerfjkltalk 15:17, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: This category was being confused for being a species category rather than one about individual characters who are parasites. There could be a complementary Category:Fictional parasitic species and races category, but I'm not sure there are enough of them to justify it. Either way, the species should be purged and recategorized to Category:Fictional species and races. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 14:41, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Alternate rename to Category:Fictional parasites. There's no reason why this should be restricted only to individual characters, especially because parasites/parasitoids are biological terms applied to various species of animals, creatures and organisms. AHI-3000 (talk) 19:01, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Rename per nom I don't see any real distinction here. Parasitoids are parasites who eventually kill their host. Their strategy is different to other parasites, but they are still parasites. Dimadick (talk) 08:59, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.

Rename per nom, but also split out the species to Category:Fictional parasites, parallelling Category:Fictional plants. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 11:27, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The entire point is that "Fictional parasites" makes it unclear whether it's a species or an individual, leading to a redux of what happened with this category. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 07:14, 24 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Zxcvbnm: Why does it need to be separated between species or individuals? Despite what you think, character categories can be inclusive of both groups and individuals. Besides, the term "parasite" is more often used to describe entire species of parasitic creatures, rather than individual organisms who happen to be parasites. And if this category is to be renamed, Category:Fictional parasites is the better alternative to both Category:Fictional parasitic characters and Category:Fictional parasites and parasitoids. AHI-3000 (talk) 21:47, 27 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Because that's how it is for every other similar category, it retains consistency. It would also be misleading to categorize individuals under species, and vice versa. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 04:44, 28 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep. I don't think there is a practical need to split out species from characters into different categories. One category containing both seems fine as a navigational tool.4meter4 (talk) 17:24, 26 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: disperse. (non-admin closure) Qwerfjkltalk 15:21, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Only has two articles that aren't redirects, too small to be realistically needed as a subcategory. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 13:10, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Not all counterterrorism organizations are military (e.g., CTU is not). Apokrif (talk) 13:37, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I was thinking the redirects would just be removed unless they became an article. These categories are not redirect dumping grounds for every little mention of a fictional organization somewhere. If not they can be diffused accordingly. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 13:41, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose, if only because counter-terrorist organizations are not necessarily all military, some can be civilian law enforcement agencies instead. AHI-3000 (talk) 19:08, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: merge to Category:Fictional monster hunters. Being interesting is not the purpose of categories. (non-admin closure) Qwerfjkltalk 15:24, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: None of the characters in here would be typically defined as an "alien hunter" first and foremost. (i.e. Samus is simply a bounty hunter, for humans or aliens alike. Agent J and K are government agents). Nor is there an actual article on the topic. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 21:32, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Merge to Category:Fictional monster hunters per Marcocapelle. Also support deletion per nom as second-best outcome, in the spirit of consensus. It is actually unlikely, even for fictional characters, that they would confront only aliens. Mulder and Scully are typical examples of that: that's something they did, not what they are. IIRC, even Ellen Ripley fights more often human or droid foes than the Xenomorph. Probably only the MIB would be so specialized, although Agent J is notable for his career in law enforcement hunting petty criminals. Also, hunter is kinda restrictive: there are no aliens (and therefore no alien hunters) in fictional settings where everyone or almost is an alien, such as Star Wars and Star Trek, and humans fighting an alien military invasion (Independence Day, Mars Attacks, The Tomorrow War, Starship Troopers, V etc.) aren't really hunters.
(non-admin closure) Qwerfjkltalk 15:35, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: The nature of this category is somewhat flummoxing, as I don't know if any of the characters here could be called "zombie hunters". Usually, zombies are hunting THEM and they're trying to do some unrelated task that might stop the zombies somehow. The idea that someone might be a "zombie hunter" is not backed up by sources. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 21:40, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • There are quite a few video games characters among them who may actually hunt zombies. Maybe purge first? Marcocapelle (talk) 07:52, 13 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As I said, it's one thing to kill zombies as part of a job, it's another thing to hunt them. I'm not sure which of these specifically hunts individual zombies, but it's certainly not enough for a category. If necessary they can be moved to Category:Fictional monster hunters. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 19:26, 13 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strongest possible keep. Lots of entries to form a delightful and enriching category... and merging to "monster hunters"? Don't think zombies qualify as monsters, they're simply undead humans, typically exposed to a horrible virus ... as for the assertion that the "zombies" are hunting them", you clearly haven't met sensai Michonne or stryker crossbow virtuoso Daryl Dixon -- they be doing the hunting, Fo'Sho'). Cbl62 (talk) 20:55, 14 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
History.com, at least, refers to zombies as monsters. Category:Zombies and revenants in popular culture is also categorized under Category:Fiction about monsters. Category:Zombies is also categorized under monsters. Even if there are a few legitimate zombie hunters there, it can easily be classified under the category of monster hunters. Still, given the fact that zombies tend to chase after any human around, "zombie slayer" strikes me as more accurate a description, as they hardly need to be hunted down. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 07:05, 16 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This comment is like fandom. Also, plenty of monsters are humans or humanoids, such as the ogre figure in classical tales, or werewolves. In fact, most probably are. Monsters is a fine merge target. Place Clichy (talk) 11:59, 29 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
