The 2010 MTV Europe Music Awards took place on November 7, 2010 at Caja Mágica in Madrid. The award show was presented by Eva Longoria[1] and Justin Bieber was the official MTV EMA 2010 digital host.[2] The nominations were announced on September 20.[3] Lady Gaga topped the list of nominees with ten followed by Katy Perry with five then Eminem with four and 30 Seconds to Mars and Muse with three apiece.[4]

30 Seconds to Mars took the stage at the pre-show featuring surprise guest Kanye West at the Puerta de Alcalá.[5] Shakira opened the show with "Loca" and the official song of the 2010 FIFA World Cup "Waka Waka" featuring Dizzee Rascal. The Colombian singer also received the MTV Free Your Mind award for her continuing dedication to improve access to education for all children around the world.[6] Performances by Katy Perry and Linkin Park were featured live from outdoor stage at Madrid's historic Puerta de Alcalá. Performing in front of close to 100,000 fans, Perry performed her single "Firework", complete with a glittering pyrotechnics display. Linkin Park performed a set which was shot in its entirety for MTV World Stage, to be broadcast on MTV platforms around the world on December 10, 2010.

The big winner of the night was Lady Gaga with three awards (Best Female, Best Pop and Best Song). Lady Gaga beamed her thanks into the Caja Mágica stadium by satellite from Budapest where she was performing the latest date on her Monster Ball Tour.[7] Bon Jovi received the Global Icon Award from Eva Longoria and were responsible for closing the show with a review of their career playing "What Do You Got?", "You Give Love a Bad Name" and "It's My Life".[8]
