90210 is an upcoming teen drama created by Rob Thomas. It is the fourth series in the Beverly Hills, 90210 franchise. The show is scheduled to premiere in the USA on The CW on September 2, 2008 with a two hour series premiere event.[1] It will also air on Global in Canada on the same day.[2] In Australia Network Ten will start airing the show on September 8. The premiere dates in other parts of the world are not yet announced.

Production and casting history

The Hollywood Reporter announced on March 13, 2008 that The CW Television Network is developing a contemporary spinoff of Beverly Hills, 90210. According to Nellie Andreeva with The Hollywood Reporter, "Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas was in talks to pen the project, which has been put on the fast track by the network". The story also noted that original 90210 creator Darren Star is not involved with the project.[3] Kristin Dos Santos confirmed on her "Watch with Kristin" blog at E! Online that the show is indeed a spin-off with completely new characters, and not a remake.[4]

Further casting details of the 2008 spin-off emerged as The Hollywood Reporter announced on March 19, 2008 that The CW had begun casting even before a script was completed. The show began production on June 25, 2008.

On April 15, 2008, Rob Thomas announced that he was stepping down as the creator of the series, due to his commitment to two ABC drama pilots. Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah (What About Brian, Freaks & Geeks) are now the new producers of the series; they wrote a new version of the script.[5]

The first actor to be cast was Dustin Milligan on March 31, 2008 as Ethan Ward,[3] followed by AnnaLynne McCord on April 15.[6] Actress/singer Hilary Duff was rumored to have been offered a part on the spinoff as Annie Wilson, a theater and music student, but she told reports that it was "not true".[7][8] The role was filled by Shenae Grimes, most well-known for her role as Darcy Edwards on Degrassi: The Next Generation.[9]

On April 28, 2008, Lori Loughlin was cast in the role of Debbie Wilson.[10] Then on April 29, 2008, Jessica Walter was cast as Tabitha Wilson , the 60-ish actress and alcoholic grandmother,[11][3] and Ryan Eggold will play an unorthodox teacher named Ryan Matthews.[12] The cast of teenagers was rounded out when Jessica Stroup (April 30),[13] Tristan Wilds[14] and Michael Steger (both May 2),[15] were cast as Erin "Silver" Silver, Dixon Wilson and Navid Shirazi respectively. Rob Estes was cast in May 19 as Harrison "Harry" Wilson.[16]

On May 10, 2008, it was announced that Jennie Garth,[17] of the original series, would reprise her role of Kelly Taylor for the spin-off. On July 2, 2008, PerezHilton.com reported that Shannen Doherty was in talks to reprise her role as Brenda.[18]

On June 1, the New York Post stated that the high school used for the original show, Torrance High School, was being used in this series as well.[19] On July 7, Kellan Lutz and Meghan Markle were cast in recurring roles for the series. Lutz will play George Evans, a lacrosse player from a wealthy family and Markle will play Wendy, a sexy student at West Beverly Hills High who takes every advantage of her looks.Cite error: A <ref> tag is missing the closing </ref> (see the help page). Jessica Lowndes is set to play Adrianna, a theatre "goddess" who suffers a drug addiction.[20]

Kristin Dos Santos announced on her blog that Brenda Walsh will be directing the school play, and since her departure from the show, she has starred in many plays in Broadway and in London.[21]

On July 25, 2008, Entertainment Weekly reported that The Peach Pit After Dark will be coming back, but will be renamed "The Pit". They also said that the manager of the PPAD from the original show will also make an appearance.

On August 06, 2008, AfterEllen.com reported that Maeve Quinlan has been cast as Adrianna's mother Constance, "an overbearing former actress and stage mom whose constant pressure drives her daughter to do drugs".[22]

On August 11, 2008, it was announced on aim.com that Tori Spelling currently has backed out of the project due to her pay being significantly less than fellow allums, Shannen Doherty and Jennie Garth.[23] It is currently unknown whether the withdrawal is permanent or she and the CW are attempting to renegotiate her salary.

On August 11, 2008, it was reported by The Associated Press that Jason Priestley has decided to reprise his role as Brandon Walsh.[24]

The show will be unaffected by any Screen Actors strike, as the show is covered under the AFTRA Primetime contract.[25] It will kick-off with a two hour series premiere event on September 2, 2008.Cite error: The <ref> tag has too many names (see the help page).

90210 looks at life through the eyes of Annie Wilson (Shenae Grimes) and her brother Dixon (Tristan Wilds), whose first day at West Beverly Hills High School leaves no doubt they're not in Kansas anymore. The Wilson family, including dad Harry (Rob Estes) and mom Debbie (Lori Loughlin), has relocated to Beverly Hills to keep an eye on Harry's mother Tabitha (Jessica Walter), a feisty-but-faded former television star and a charter member of the Betty Ford Clinic. For Annie and Dixon, the awkwardness of being the new kids is made worse by the fact that their dad has taken a job as the high school principal. The school is one big culture shock for Annie, a sweet and friendly girl with a passion for the theater, and Dixon, a star athlete and scholar who was adopted by the Wilson family after they took him in as a foster child. Annie and Dixon have a close sibling relationship, which they'll need to help them cope with all the new cliques and classmates, including Naomi (AnnaLynne McCord), a hot, spoiled, rich girl; Ethan (Dustin Milligan), a popular jock whose abilities rival Dixon's; Navid (Michael Steger), an aspiring reporter who heads up the school's daily newscast; and Silver (Jessica Stroup), a rebel who produces and stars in a YouTube-type video series. Even the faculty seems hip and sophisticated at WBHHS, such as smart and funny teacher Ryan Matthews (Ryan Eggold), beautiful guidance counselor Kelly Taylor (Jennie Garth), and successful theater actress turned high school musical director Brenda Walsh (Shannen Doherty). The Wilson family has just begun to realize how much their lives are about to change.

Naomi is described as “a hot, spoiled, rich girl” who rules the social scene. She appears to be a brat at first, but throughout the series her character will peel back layers to show why she is the way she is. She is Ethan Ward’s girlfriend, but will develop an attraction towards her English teacher, Ryan Mathews.
Ethan Ward Dustin Milligan
A lacrosse star and a top athlete who’s known as the “likeable jock” as well as being Naomi’s boyfriend. He will fall out of the popular crowd, and eventually befriend the 90210 crew. He rivals Dixon at first, and will catch the eyes of Annie.
Navid Shirazi Michael Steger
A Persian descent who is the West Beverly Hills High’s politico. Known as the one who runs the school newscast, and gets the juice on the his fellow classmates. He does not drink alcohol because of his Scientology religion. He is also rumored to be closeted-homosexual character further on.
Ryan Mathews Ryan Eggold
A cool English lit teacher at West Beverly High whose unorthodox teaching style puts him at odds with his fellow teachers and sometimes too close with his students. Will be Kelly Taylor's love interest.
Debbie Wilson Lori Loughlin
Wife of Harry Wilson; was an Olympic athlete, but is now working as a personal trainer.
Harrison "Harry" Wilson Rob Estes
Son of Tabitha Wilson and Kelly Taylor's old neighbor, a graduate of West Beverly Hills High, decides to move back to 90210; accepting a position as the principal at his old high school.
Tabitha Wilson Jessica Walter
The matriarch of the family, is a 60ish actress (and alcoholic), who was very famous during the 1970s. She is the cause of the Wilson family’s departure from Kansas.

Uncertain returns of characters from original series

  • Brandon Walsh (Jason Priestley) – Jason Priestley originally had expressed interest in a recurring role on the show and being an executive producer (a role which he had in the original series starting in season seven until the show's completion), but in July, 2008 said that, "no," he won't be appearing on 90210.[26] However, Priestley had left the door open to return to the series as an executive producer and a director for the series. An Associated Press report on August 11 listed Priestley as a special guest star that would be reprising his original role.[24] On August 12th, an article published by CNN also listed Priestley as a special guest star on 90210.[27] Yet, since there has been no other mention of Priestley returning to the series from any other media outlets, his status with the series remains uncertain.
  • David Silver (Brian Austin Green) – It was reported in August, 2008 that the producers of the show were highly considering approaching Green to reprise his 90210 role.[28]. Green confirmed this report in a later interview .[29], and while he did leave the door open for an eventual return, cited the fact that his full time role on the Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles series may prevent him from appearing for the time being.
  • Donna Martin (Tori Spelling) - On May 27, 2008, it was revealed that Spelling would return in a recurring part as Donna, who now owns one of the hottest stores in Beverly Hills, which is frequently visited by the main cast.[30] She was originally supposed to appear in one scene in the first episode,[31] but due to recently having a baby, she postponed her appearance until later on in the season.[32] Spelling was initially signed on to 90210 for a reported $10,000-$20,000 per episode, however, after reportedly finding out that Jennie Garth and Shannen Doherty would be getting a reported $40,000-$60,000 per episode, Spelling withdrew her services from the series.[16] It is currently unknown whether the withdrawal is permanent or she and the CW are attempting to renegotiate her salary. However, it is speculated that salary might not be the reason for the withdrawal, as costar Shannen Doherty claimed that the press accounts did not get the salary amounts right.[33] On August 14th, Monsters And Critics reported that Tori has not completely withdrawn from as series, as she is still interested in appearing later on in the season.[34] On August 25, Monsters and Critics also reported that Spelling is in talks with producers for a renegotiation of her salary for appearing on the show.[35] It was unknown whether she and David Silver are still married.

  • Steve Sanders (Ian Ziering) – Ziering initally indicated that he would do literally "anything" to be Steve Sanders again [31], expressing interest in participating in a recurring role on the show. However, Ziering later announced that he has no interest in reprising his role as Steve.[36]
