The Song of Megaptera is a Big Finish audio drama based on the long-running British science fiction television series Doctor Who. Originally proposed as a TV story for the Fourth Doctor, then reworked for the Fifth and Sixth Doctors but never filmed, it was produced by Big Finish Productions as part of the "Lost Stories" in 2010.

Plot

The Doctor discovers a harvesting ship hunting giant space whales.

Production

This story, originally titled The Song Of The Space Whale, was written for Doctor Who Weekly and featured the Fourth Doctor, although it was never submitted. Instead, at Mills's wife's suggestion, it was altered and submitted for television. It changed to incorporate the Fifth Doctor, alongside Tegan and Nyssa, and would have introduced the character Turlough; it was rejected in favour of Mawdryn Undead. It was then resubmitted under the title The Space Whale and rewritten to feature the Sixth Doctor and Peri. It was rejected in favour of Vengeance on Varos.[citation needed]
