The Z20900 Class is a train model built by Alstom and Bombardier between 2001 and 2004 and used by the SNCF for its RER service on the RER C Line.Their arrival on the line allowed the oldest trains to be scrapped. The line becames 100% bi-level trains at this moment.
Specifications
Design
The Z 20900 class are part of the Z 2N family. They are an improved version of the Z20500 class which they succeed. They are distinguished in particular by:
-Large, much more comfortable seats with armrests
-The OnIX traction inverters (Onduleur à Intégration eXceptionnelle) based on IGBT components
-Intercirculation between the two central cars
-Refrigerated ventilation and tinted windows;
The two power cars (ZBe) have 82 seats while the two cars (ZRBe) each have 96, as well as a toilet.
distribution
Today (in 2020) all Z20900 trains are assigned to the RER C line.
They are on all service on the RER C Line.
History
In order to complete the rolling stock fleet of line C of the RER, and to eliminate from the line the last 42 Z 5300 elements still in service, SNCF ordered at the end of 1998 year, new trains of type Z 20500, but comprising various changes in motorization and development. These new components were delivered from July 2001 to 2004 and are numbered Z 20900. Their delivery eliminates, by offset, the first sub-series of Z 6100 in the northern suburbs.
While the first forty elements are decorated with the three-color livery called "Île-de-France", the last fourteen are endowed with the navy blue Transilien livery with cartons, then applied to two-level commuter cars (VB 2N) and stainless steel suburban trainsets (RIB) renovated. The last ten elements of the series are funded by the Île-de-France Regional Council.
The OniX traction chain, tested on element Z 20887-20888, is generalized on these new trains.
They are distinguished from the Z 20500 by the arrangement of the seats with four front seats (2 + 2), all provided with armrests and whose comfort is improved, by the absence of first class compartment, eliminated in the RER on the 1st September 1999, and by the presence of tinted windows and refrigerated ventilation, making it possible to lower the ambient temperature by 3 to 4 ° C in summer.
A locking device for the doors of the power cars allows passengers to gather in the extreme evening in the two central trailers, linked by an interlocking circulation without doors, this in order to lessen the feeling of insecurity in almost empty trainsets.
