The 1928 United States presidential election in North Carolina was held on November 6, 1928. North Carolina voters chose twelve electors to the Electoral College, who voted for president and vice president.
The Republican Party candidate, Herbert Hoover, won the state of North Carolina with 54.94 percent of the popular vote. The Democratic Party candidate, Al Smith, garnered 45.06 percent of the popular vote. 1928 is the only time North Carolina voted Republican between 1872 and 1968. Even though North Carolina was a part of the Solid South at this time, anti-Catholic sentiment surrounding Al Smith was rampant, even to the point where the Democrats lost the state.[1] As of the 2016 presidential election[update], this is the last election in which Orange County voted for a Republican presidential candidate.[2]
