The 2020 FC Cincinnati season will be the club's second season in MLS, and the fifth season of a team playing under the FC Cincinnati brand after three years in the lower-division USL Championship. The club finished with a league worst 6–22–6 record in their inaugural MLS season in 2019, setting a league record for the most goals given up with 75.[1] The 2020 season is expected to be the final year that FC Cincinnati will play home matches at Nippert Stadium, as their new West End Stadium is scheduled to open in March 2021.[2]
FC Cincinnati's offseason transfers and preseason training were executed under head coach Ron Jans. However, Jans resigned on February 17, amidst an investigation into his alleged use of a racial slur. Assistant coach Yoann Damet took over as interim head coach two weeks before FC Cincinnati's first regular season match.[3] On May 21, 2020, Jaap Stam was named head coach.[4] Stam becomes the fourth head coach in club's MLS history. Said Bakkati, who has worked on Stam's staff in the past, was also named new assistant coach.

MLS is Back Tournament
A one-off World Cup style tournament featuring all 26 MLS teams, the MLS is Back Tournament consists of six groups with each team playing three group matches. The top two teams from each group along with the four best third-place teams will move on to the knockout stage, beginning with the Round of 16. The draw for the group stage took place on June 11 with FC Cincinnati placed in Group E. Atlanta United FC were predetermined as a top seed prior to the draw taking place for finishing as a semi-finalist in the 2019 MLS Cup Playoffs. The New York Red Bulls and in-state rival Columbus Crew SC were randomly drawn as the two other group stage opponents.[36]
