Emory Andrew Tate III (born December 14, 1986) is a British-American kickboxer and online personality. Tate had a successful kickboxing career. In 2017 he made some controversial tweets regarding sexual assault and sexual harassment, including that women should "take some personal responsibility" if they put themselves "in a position to be raped".[4][5]

Career

Kickboxing

In 2009, Tate was reportedly employed in selling television advertising but since 2005 had practiced boxing and martial arts on the side. That year, he won the International Sport Karate Association (ISKA) Full Contact Cruiserweight championship in Derby, England, and was ranked number one at his weight in Europe. Though he had won 17 of his 19 fights, he said it was his first belt and title.[2]

Tate lost the fight for the vacant ISKA World Full-Contact Light Heavyweight Championship to Jean-Luc Benoit on points after 12 rounds. They had a rematch three months later in Luton, England, but this time Tate became champion, defeating Benoit via KO in round 8 of the scheduled 12 rounds.[6][verification needed]

In 2013, Tate won his second ISKA world title in a 12-round match. It was Tate's second world title in two different weight divisions. The fight was held in Châteaurenard, France.[3] Tate took the ISKA World Full-Contact Light Cruiserweight Championship via split decision.[citation needed]

Online career

Tate has used online profiles to steer traffic to his website offering training courses on getting rich and "male-female interactions". According to the website, he operates a webcam studio using girlfriends as employees.[7]

Personal life

In 2016, Tate gained public notoriety following his removal from the 17th season of Big Brother following the release of a video in which Tate appeared to beat a woman. He was subsequently removed from the show. Tate said the actions were consensual.[7]

Tate received attention for his tweets delineating his view of what qualifies as sexual harassment amid the Harvey Weinstein sexual abuse cases and for tweeting several statements about his view that sexual assault victims share responsibility for their assaults. Three of Tate's Twitter accounts were suspended at different times. In 2021, an account he created to evade his previous ban was verified by Twitter contrary to their policies. The account appeared to have been part of a promotion with Bugatti. The account was subsequently permanently suspended, and Twitter said the verification occurred in error.[7]

In April 2022, The Daily Beast reported that Tate's house was raided by Romanian police in relation to a human trafficking and rape investigation, prompted by reports that an American woman was being held at the property against her will. Romanian authorities found both a Romanian woman and an American woman at the property. As of April 2022, Romanian authorities said the investigation was still ongoing. A U.S. State Department spokesperson referred to the reported abduction but declined to comment further, citing privacy considerations.[8]
