Galahad is a small village in east-central Alberta, located just a few miles north of the Battle River valley on the route a former CN rail line. The four streets and three avenues were aligned with the railway (NW to SE), rather than conventional north-south-east-west orientation. The major economic base of the Galahad region is agriculture (wheat, barley, canola as well as raising beef or pork), oil & gas production, coal mining and power generation.
The village hosts modest services including general store, gas station, restaurant, motel, post office, and library. The community received high-speed internet access in 2006. There is no school in Galahad, and all students are bused 16 kilometres (9.9 mi) to Forestburg for all classes (kindergarten to grade 12).
Recreation facilities include a bowling alley, outdoor skating rink, ball diamonds, playgrounds, and a campground (on the former school grounds). Hiking and cross country skiing trails can be found at nearby Big Knife Provincial Park. For downhill skiing, there is a small ski hill called Valley Ski Club is located just south of Alliance, Alberta (22 km/14 mi from Galahad). Other activities including hockey, baseball, softball, golf, curling and swimming are available in nearby communities of Forestburg, Killam, and Castor.
Major transportation routes nearby include Highway 36 and Highway 53.
Demographics
In the 2011 Census, the Village of Galahad had a population of 119 living in 49 of its 64 total dwellings, an -11.2% change from its 2006 population of 134. With a land area of 0.6 km2 (0.23 sq mi), it had a population density of 198.3/km2 (513.7/sq mi) in 2011.[2]
In 2006, Galahad had a population of 134 living in 62 dwellings, a 16.8% decrease from 2001. The village has a land area of 0.60 square kilometres (0.23 sq mi) and a population density of 224.8/km2 (582/sq mi).[3]
Arts and culture
Of interest, the streets in Galahad have been given names pertaining to Arthurian legend. The village boasts such thoroughfares as Merlin Street, Sir Lancelot Street (which perhaps not surprisingly intersects with Guinevere Avenue) and King Arthur Street. Mysteriously, street names include "Lady Helen" and "Lady Vivian," figures not clearly connected with Camelot.
