Hindmotor is a small town of Hooghly District, West Bengal, India and near Serampore, situated on the western bank of the river Ganges. It is a part of the area covered by Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority.[2]

The town is popular because Hindustan Motors Ltd. (HML) has been in the area since 1948. Part of the manufacturing sites of HML also belongs to neighbouring Uttarpara and Konnagar. The famous Indian car Hindustan Ambassador, fondly called "The king of Indian roads" had its manufacturing plant here. This car had its origins in on the Morris Oxford series III model, which was primarily a British car from 1956 to 1959.

Hindmotor comes under Uttarpara Kotrung municipality, which was established in 1853,[3] much before the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (1876).

Geography

Hindmotor is located at 22°41′N 88°20′E / 22.69°N 88.33°E / 22.69; 88.33,[4] situated about 22 km. away from Esplanade, the central part of Kolkata, which is the capital of the state of West Bengal. It has an average elevation of 15 metres (52 feet). Located at the south-eastern tip of the Hooghly District, on the banks of the river Ganges, it is just across the Dakshineswar Kali Temple.

Hindmotor has a local railway station called Hindmotor. The station lies in the Howrah-Bardhaman Main Line of Eastern Railway and is about 12 km from Howrah station. On the west of the station lies the motor factory, Hindustan Motors. The part owned by C.K.Birla has two schools (Hindmotor High School and H.M.Education Center), one hospital, two temples, a residential complex for factory staff and the factory premises.

Recently, Bengal Shriram Properties, real estate arm of Chennai-based Shriram Group is coming up with an information technology (IT) park and a residential complex which will be developed on 300 acres.

Transportation

Hindmotor is well connected by road and rail. Hindmotor station connects the town with Howrah via Howrah-Bardhaman Main Line which connects the metropolis of Kolkata with the rest of India. At Bally, just a kilometer off, three major railway lines converge. The nation's prime road artery, the Grand Trunk Road passes through Hindmotor. Hindmotor is a suburb of Kolkata. The majority of its population either works in the Hindustan Motors or goes to Kolkata for work.
