Real Madrid C.F. is a professional association football club based in Madrid, Spain, that plays in La Liga. The club was formed in 1902 as Madrid Football Club, and played its first competitive match on 13 May 1902, when it entered the semi-final of the Campeonato de Copa de S.M. Alfonso XIII.[1] Real Madrid was one of the founding members of La Liga in 1929, and is one of three clubs, including FC Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao, to have never been relegated from the league.[2][3] Since then, the club's first team has competed in numerous nationally and internationally organised competitions. Real is the most successful club in Spanish football along with FC Barcelona, having won a total of 60 domestic titles; a record 32 La Liga titles, 18 Spanish Cups, eight Spanish Super Cups, one Copa Eva Duarte and one League Cup. Real is one of the most successful clubs in European football, having won twelve official UEFA trophies in total.[4]
Raúl holds the record for most overall appearances, having played 741 from 1994 to 2010, ahead of Manuel Sanchís, Jr, who has made 711 appearances from 1983 to 2001.[5] Santillana is third with 645 appearances for the club.[6] Raúl has scored the most goals with 323, of which 228 were scored in league competition, making him the Real Madrid player who has scored the most goals in the league. Alfredo Di Stefano is second with 305 goals, and Santillana is third, having scored 289 goals. Cristiano Ronaldo holds the record for the most goals in a season; he scored 60 goals in all competitions during the 2011–12 season. Cristiano Ronaldo also holds the record for league goals scored in a season, having scored 46 goals in La Liga in 2011–12.
Real Madrid has employed several famous players, with four FIFA World Player and six Ballon d'Or winners among the previous and current club players.
