Red Velvet (Hangul: 레드벨벳) is a South Korean girl group formed by S.M. Entertainment in 2014. They made their debut with the digital single "Happiness", which was released August 4, 2014. The group is composed of five members: Irene, Seulgi, Wendy, Joy and Yeri.

History

Pre-debut

Seulgi, the first member who joined the agency, was brought in through an audition in 2007. Irene, the next member to join the company, was cast in 2009. Wendy auditioned through the SM Global Audition in Canada in 2012. Joy auditioned through the SM Global Audition in Seoul in 2012.[1]

As part of S.M. Rookies, several clips of Irene, Seulgi and Wendy were released on S.M. Entertainment's official YouTube account.[2] The three members were rumored to debut as a group in July, which was then confirmed by S.M. Entertainment.[3][4] With the addition of member Joy, the four-member group would debut as Red Velvet, S.M. Entertainment's first girl group in five years after f(x).[5]

2014: Debut with Happiness and Be Natural

Red Velvet made their official debut stage on the music program Music Bank on August 1, 2014.[6] Their debut single, "Happiness", was digitally released on August 4.[7] The song was penned by Yoo Young-jin and composed by Will Simms, Chad Hugo (The Neptunes), Chris Holsten and Anne Judith Wik (Dsign Music). It was described as an urban Europop song with a strong synth sound and an African tribal beat.[8] The original music video for "Happiness" had more than 2 million views on YouTube in its first 24 hours before being removed (due to controversy over problematic images) and replaced with an edited version. The current version has over 18 million views as of June, 2015[9] and it was the second-most viewed K-pop music video worldwide for the month of August.[10] "Happiness" peaked at number 5 on the Gaon Singles Chart.[11]

Red Velvet released their second digital single "Be Natural" on October 13. The song is a remake of the 2000 song of the same name by S.E.S., S.M. Entertainment's first girl group.[12] The group started their promotional activities for this release on October 9, making their first appearance on the music program, M! Countdown.[13] The music video for the song was released during the same day.[14] It was directed by Shim Jaewon, who also worked with choreographer Kyle Hanagami for the choreography.[15] The music video shows the original choreography seen in the pre-debut clip of members Irene and Seulgi when they performed the song in an SMROOKIES video. It also features SR14B member, Taeyong, doing the rap parts.

2015: New member Yeri, success of Ice Cream Cake, and full-length album The Red

On March 11, 2015, SM Entertainment announced that the group's first mini-album will be called Ice Cream Cake and was released on March 15. On the same day, they released a video announcing the addition of a new member, Yeri, to the group's lineup. Yeri was formerly part of S.M. Rookies with Irene, Seulgi and Wendy.[16][17] "Automatic," the group's first music video featuring Yeri, was released on March 14.[18]

The group started promotions on music shows on March 19 and also promoted the album through the program, Ice Cream TV which was streamed through Naver Music and was hosted by SHINee's Minho.[19] On March 15, the music video for "Ice Cream Cake" was released with the announcement that both "Automatic" and "Ice Cream Cake" will be promoted as double lead singles off the album.[20] The album debuted at #1 on South Korea's Gaon Weekly Albums chart[21] and debuted at #2 on Billboard's World Albums Chart.[22] The album also peaked at 25 on Billboard's Top Heatseekers on April 4, 2015.[23] "Ice Cream Cake" debuted at #4 on the Gaon Singles Chart[24][25] and peaked at #3 on Billboard's World Digital Songs chart.[26] The other five songs on the album also charted on the Gaon Singles Chart with "Automatic" peaking at #9.[22][27][28] "Ice Cream Cake" was the most viewed K-pop video for March, 2015 worldwide.[29][30] On March 27, they won their first music show trophy on Music Bank as well as multiple trophies from Show! Music Core and Inkigayo. They are the first girl group debuting in 2014 to garner music show awards and sweep local digital charts in South Korea.[31] For the first half of 2015, the album would go on to become the best selling album by a girl group in South Korea on the Hanteo Chart.[32]

In August 2015, Red Velvet held their first United States performance during the annual KCON convention and music festival in Los Angeles, California.[33]

On September 3, 2015, Red Velvet announced their first full-length album The Red through their Instagram account. It is set to be released on September 9 with a total of ten tracks, including the single "Dumb Dumb".[34][35]According to the group's members, "Dumb Dumb" tells the story of a teenage girl who becomes awkward whenever she falls in love. The music video for "Dumb Dumb" is set in a doll factory and was released on September 8, 2015.[36] The album was received positively by critics. Billboard's Jeff Benjamin called The Red "an impressive, solid debut album" and stated that it "indicates big things for the act that needs to follow in the footsteps of their beloved female label mates Girls' Generation and f(x)."[37] The album topped both South Korea's Gaon Album Chart and Billboard's World Albums Chart. It also charted at #24 on the Heatseekers Albums Chart.[38][39] "Dumb Dumb" peaked at #3 on Billboard's World Digital Songs chart and at #2 on the Gaon Singles Chart. All songs from the album also charted on Gaon.[40]

Artistry and Influences

Image

The group's image is based around both words in their name. "Red" is used to reflect a colorful, strong, and bold concept, with songs such as "Happiness, Ice Cream Cake, and Dumb Dumb while "Velvet" is used to reflect a feminine and sensual concept, with songs like "Be Natural" and "Automatic". [41]

Controversy

Shortly after the release of the music video for "Happiness," Japanese media reported that images referencing the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki as well as the September 11 attacks were seen in the video. S.M. Entertainment responded to the reports, explaining, "After questioning the director, we found that he simply used a collage source for the images, and there was no intention behind it." The representative added, "As SM wasn't able to catch it before, we will remove the material that caused the misunderstanding as soon as possible. We will make sure not to let this kind of thing happen in the future."[42][43] On August 3, S.M. Entertainment deleted the original "Happiness" music video and uploaded a re-edited version without the controversial scenes.[44][45]
