Sharma is a common surname in India and Nepal. The Sanskrit stem śarman- (nom. sarma) can mean 'joyfullness', 'comfort', 'happiness'. Although historically associated with people of the Brahmin and Kshatriya varnas, the name has been widely adopted by other communities.[1]

Sarma is an alternative English spelling of the name. Some Assamese people also use Sarmah.[2]
