I've removed LiveLoveA$AP from the main page under his discography, as this album was a mixtape and not a studio album.

mixtapes shouldnt be listed under the main discography page, if an entire page has been created for the artists works here ASAP Rocky discography — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:980:45E4:1:55DA:5313:18B4:E543 (talk) 19:56, 27 November 2012 (UTC)

Notability

This article was deleted multiple times due to copyvio in some cases, and no indication of significance in others. Given the amount of in-depth coverage now available on ASAP Rocky, he at least meets criterion 1 of WP:MUSICBIO.  Gongshow Talk 08:43, 15 November 2011 (UTC)

Although his unique style is what originally gained notice from rappers such as Drake, he's expressed how his music is not always welcomed in the hip-hop community. However he doesn't let critics change his style, telling Billboard, "Hip-hop doesn't appreciate or understand me, at times....Long.Live.A$AP - here, clear as day. These are all my ideas, from the beginning to the end. I don't care to satisfy people. I really don't. Because when I started out with this shit it was all out of love and I was hoping they liked it. I still hope they like it- but I don't care to satisfy people because I'm just doing me." Allisonlee1 (talk) 17:46, 25 July 2014 (UTC)Allisonlee1 [1]

Confuse tag

I've added a Template:Confuse tag to the article to distinguish Aesop Rock. The names are confusingly similar, and I doubt I'm the only one who has come to this article looking for the other rapper. An equivalent tag has been at the Aesop Rock article for a long time.--Cúchullain t/c 19:43, 26 April 2016 (UTC)

Please explain the issue here. This would seem to be an entirely reasonable tag; as I said, an equivalent tag has been at Aesop Rock for a long time.--Cúchullain t/c 13:11, 27 April 2016 (UTC)
Here are sources explicitly remarking on the similarity of the names and the fact that people often confuse them, including a quote from ASAP Rocky himself:[1][2][3]--Cúchullain t/c 13:26, 27 April 2016 (UTC)
I'm convinced the tag is an improvement. Willondon (talk) 02:15, 28 April 2016 (UTC)
Thanks, Willondon. Given the lack of objection here I've restored the tag.--Cúchullain t/c 13:22, 28 April 2016 (UTC)

Style

“Rocky always saw his self famous but he didn’t know how he’d make it happen” (Noisey). According from ASAP Rocky, when he was “five or four years old” he planned in being an ice cream truck man until his father told him to change his dreams to something more prosperous and more self respect. His brother followed music and so did his family, and by the age of 8 is where it all started. “ASAP Rocky’s first audio studio effort, 2013’s Long. Live. ASAP, which debuted with 139,000 copies atop the tally dated February 2, 2013” (Rocky Scores Second 1, Keith Caulfield). His Long. Live. Asap. mixtape release boomed to a wide audience of underground hip hop listeners that then became popular to a wide nation hip-hop and rap audience through the nation. His associations helped him “strive and prosper” through his music career when he took rapping to serious measures. His affiliation with ASAP Mob gave him the privilege to record and go out to perform his taste and style of hip-hop music. According from Harlem’s Finest, “Rocky has a casual, midrange voice that sounds happy to move between sluggish and crisp deliveries.” and according to ASAP Rocky he described his music as “lay-back, chill, slow, calm, cloudy” from Noisey. “What Rocky really stands for is the long-term shift away from m.c.s who are merely clever versifiers and toward those who combine personality, vocal timbre, and confidence to establish an identity that marks a body of work.” (Harlems Finest, Jonah Weiner) Coming from ASAP Rocky, his performances started from small shows in New York at ALIFE NY to touring with Drake as an opening artist (Noisey). Asap Rocky’s intending audience were hipsters and urban young cats starting from his mixtape, Live Love ASAP. When he dropped his Long Live ASAP album his audience gained different form of listeners who got the attention of the different style of music that ASAP Rocky left in album. The style from this album wasn’t as urban and underground as his mixtape so it created some controversy. According to ASAP Rocky there was a moment during his making of Long Live Asap that he decided to make a mainstream track with Skrillex and to prove the audience that he was not only good at making music for a certain type of genre for urban hipsters but also for the mainstream radio listening audience (Noisey). There was a thought of there being “a shift that has frustrated those who believe that the genre's flowers should stay near its roots”. Rocky's new album, "Long.Live.A$AP," which debuted at No. 1, probably won't succeed in restoring New York's prominence, not because there's anything wrong with the album but because the record proves that rap is moving at a brisk, healthy pace into a period in which region and style are no longer essential identifiers, according to Harlem’s Finest. ASAP Rocky had his own vision and work he wanted to embed into the music world and that seemed to be his purpose in creating the type of art he desired. He was able to prove that he can make different sorts of music from underground to mainstream (Noisey). This proves his form of authenticity and style of his genre of his music. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lopezcristian23 (talkcontribs) 06:40, 29 September 2016 (UTC)

The Stockholm assault

Some more news.

  • He remain in arrest[4] and may remain there until August[5][6][7] as there is a risk he will flee or tamper with evidence[8]
  • Other artists are threaterning to boycot Sweden[9][10][11][12]

Perhaps something to add to the article. // Liftarn (talk) 12:03, 9 July 2019 (UTC)

Oh, this is gold. He complains about the "inhumane" conditions. The past week's menu at Kronoberg jail has included turkey, veal mince burgers and rhubarb pie with custard. [13][14] Leif Mannerström reviewed his menu.[15] // Liftarn (talk) 06:31, 10 July 2019 (UTC)

To be fair, Mannerström wasn't impressed, saying that he didn't recognize some of the names, and that they served rice and poultry too often. Sjö (talk) 16:47, 11 July 2019 (UTC)

And after lying to the media about the conditions i jail there was a petition to release him.[16]

Oh, and the formal charge have been reduced from aggrevated assault to just assault.[17][18] // Liftarn (talk) 08:24, 11 July 2019 (UTC)

His attorney and spokesperson claims that the situation has been exaggerated, that ASAP Rocky can't identify with the image conveyed of his custody and that he doesn't want to convey an image of "whining". (It seems as he'd still deny the charges, though.) [19] 惑乱 Wakuran (talk) 21:43, 11 July 2019 (UTC)
Also, there exists a distinction between the dirty arrest cell, where he first was taken, and the custody afterwards. The custody is sparse, but not inhumane. 惑乱 Wakuran (talk) 21:49, 11 July 2019 (UTC)
[citation needed] for "dirty". Certainly spartan, but dirty? They are after all sparsley decorated to be easy to clean. // Liftarn (talk) 06:32, 12 July 2019 (UTC)
In the Dagens Nyheter article I linked above, the attorney Henrik Olsson Lilja states that Rocky complained about the arrest cell (but not the custody living room) reeking of urine, which he deemed as possible, due to it not being any lavatory in connection to the arrest cell, itself. 惑乱 Wakuran (talk) 08:59, 12 July 2019 (UTC)
That is a subjective interpretation, not facts. And now a former US diplomat suggests the Swedish government should violate the constitution.[20] // Liftarn (talk) 10:19, 12 July 2019 (UTC)

Saturday Night Live (Season 43, 2018) appearance

I didn't see a mention of this in the Television section. Here's an official SNL link to the skit: Friendos (featuring A$AP Rocky). He appears at the video end in a cameo and doesn't have any real involvement in the skit, but I'm not sure how complete you guys want this article to be.

Given the subject's peripheral involvement in the skit, I don't think it's worth a mention. If the subject had been the guest host of that episode, of course, that would have been different. loupgarous (talk) 04:59, 20 July 2019 (UTC)

Swedish law & "häkte"

Swedish law allows self-defense but not excessive violence against an assumed attacker. "Who began ?" is of some significance, but not all. Motion pictures shown in Swedish Television shows how ASAP Rocky kicks and jumps on an already lying man. The reason for the arrest (In Swedish "häkte") is the severe danger he would not appear at court. "Häkte" or arrest until trial (inside a Police building not a prison) is not rare in cases of violence in Sweden. Such arrests are often very psychological damaging, the suspected person usually spends 23 hours a day in a totally closed room. Suicides are by far more common in such arrests, if compared to in Swedish prisons. Swedish justice has been criticized many times before for "häkte". If not found guilty by the court (and the public prosecutor doesn't appeal) , then the person can request and receive financial compensation. But the level of such compensation is poor. NPOV to the best of my capability. Boeing720 (talk) 18:16, 24 July 2019 (UTC)

I don't understand what change you want to make to the article (if any)? Or is this additional information for the better understanding of the Swedish judicial system so that other editors don't introduce misunderstandings? This link might also help with that. Sjö (talk) 06:59, 25 July 2019 (UTC)
Oh - there has been so terribly much about this person here in Sweden lately. Including Donald Trump x 2 plus groupies demanding "his freedom" etc. It's apparent many Americans thinks the juridical system is like theirs. Clear some things up - here. On one side this type of custody is (in Sweden) infamous for suicides due to claustrophobia etc. On the other hand, should a person famous in USA be given benefits others don't don't ? Things to considerate when changing in this article. Boeing720 (talk) 03:49, 28 July 2019 (UTC)

Name

This is not a parody, as A$AP stands for "Always Strive and Prosper" — Preceding unsigned comment added by Connor.maxwell.58 (talkcontribs) 16:49, 20 March 2014 (UTC)

A backronym doesn’t make the inspiration any more or less unlikely. —174.141.182.82 (talk) 23:16, 11 June 2015 (UTC)

The organic development of his name based on his label "ASAP" is clearly distinct from the aforementioned "Aesop," the Greek fabulist and storyteller. These two words are similar but decidedly unrelated. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.16.209.188 (talk) 00:03, 3 August 2019 (UTC)

Names

Should we refer to the subject throughout the article as Mayers, Rocky or something else? We should pick one and stick with it, unless there's good chronological reasons or something.

Should we keep Jafari's name in the article per WP:BLPNAME? Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 14:31, 27 July 2019 (UTC)

  • I don't know whether complainants in assault cases in Sweden can or usually do have their identities protected. That's the central issue in WP:BLPNAME, isn't it? Can someone here who does know if Jafari can claim privacy after filing a complaint of assault comment on this? If that's not an issue, then we ought to mention Jafari by name as our RS mention him. loupgarous (talk) 02:17, 5 August 2019 (UTC)

Nothing about the assault charge in the lede?

I added something to the lede about the assault and an anon took it out with an edit summary that I do not understand. Anyway, I think the charges are the most notable thing that has happened to this subject, it being an international event. Any consensus either way? Nocturnalnow (talk) 21:12, 22 July 2019 (UTC)

Yes, before that he was not known to the mainstream and considering the international attention it got it should be there. // Liftarn (talk) 07:54, 24 July 2019 (UTC)
I agree. Having the US President intervene makes the charge very notable. Sjö (talk) 06:55, 25 July 2019 (UTC)
I feel that we can and should wait until 25 August, the scheduled date for the verdict, before discussing alleged criminal activity in the lede of a wikipedia article. Right now, that would be placing undue weight on an unsettled criminal charge. After 25 August, if the court finds the subject guilty, that would carry enough weight to be mentioned in a lede paragraph and not be contentious in a wikipedia article about a living person. If the court finds the subject not guilty, mentioning criminal charges which have been dismissed in court in an article lede about a living person gives those charges undue weight, per WP:BLP.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Vfrickey (talkcontribs)
Even if he is cleared of any charges, I think that having the President intervene on his behalf and creating somewhat of an international incident is noteworthy enough. I don't think that ASAP Rocky got that much international press coverage at any time before. Sjö (talk) 04:56, 5 August 2019 (UTC)

Please ADD to 'Early Life,' A$AP Rocky attended Booker T. Washington, M.S. 54

A$AP Rocky attended Booker T. Washington, M.S. 54 in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, in New York City.

"Booker T" is a highly-competitive 6-8 grade public middle school, where most must exceed high standardized test scores and/or cumulative GPA, etc. for admission. Some get admission by lottery. However, the learning environment is excellent, with consideration of each student's unique experience.

A$AP Rocky, in addition to several other 'famous' individuals, like Timothée Chalamet, went to M.S. 54 in NYC.

ASAP Rocky's first deal with Polo Grounds/J

I think it's very evident that Rocky had actually signed a deal with J Records, through Polo Grounds Music, during its final week of operations. It was beyond the time when "Purple Swag" blew up that J/Polo Grounds had him around late September to early October 2011. Then, on October 7, Rocky's deal with J Records got short lived when Sony/RCA Music Group merged it into RCA Records. The deal didn't publicly commence until a week after the absorption. Don't you think those statements should be included on this article? Darrion "Beans" Brown 🙂 (my talk page / my sandbox) 22:03, 22 December 2022 (UTC)

Please replace "Barbadian" With the word Bajan. That is what you call someone from Barbados... Bajan. 2600:4040:9BB0:9500:84AD:97DB:DCBB:14D4 (talk) 01:51, 13 February 2023 (UTC)

I would request we update the article and edit in the fact that his instrumental album has not been released as of 2023 instead of 2022 as it is now. ByAnyMeansNeccesary1 (talk) 22:23, 28 October 2023 (UTC)
