Abedi Pele not Abédi Pelé
[edit]Abedi Pele hails from Ghana. Is it right that because he played the rest of his football in France, Wikipedia should change the spelling of his name and add the accents? Who decides how names are spelt on Wikipedia? I think this article should be redirected to Abedi Pele unless he himself decides that he has changed the spelling of his name.--Natsubee (talk) 15:48, 10 October 2009 (UTC)
The name change has nothing to do with his playing career;maybe Wiki copy -right! Maharba10 (talk) 04:23, 10 April 2020 (UTC)
Requested move
[edit]- The following discussion is an archived discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the move request was page moved. Skomorokh 08:58, 27 December 2009 (UTC)
Abédi Pelé → Abedi Pele — This is the usual spelling of his name. The French press added the diacritics when he moved to France to continue his football. Wikipedia has taken that changed spelling instead of the original. --Natsubee (talk) 09:19, 13 December 2009 (UTC)
- For example:Use in his native Ghana media:Ghanaweb.com; ModernGhana.com; GraphicGhana.com. Is it fair to change the way his name is written simply because he does not come from USA or Europe? The west seems to sometimes impose its will on others even on wikipedia.--Natsubee (talk) 06:35, 14 December 2009 (UTC)
- "Is it fair to change the way his name is written simply because he does not come from USA or Europe? The west seems to sometimes impose its will on others even on wikipedia." - this is not only speculation, but almost certainly untrue. Most names from Africa do not get changed, some from in Europe do. Knepflerle (talk) 14:16, 14 December 2009 (UTC)
- Support as this is the English language Wikipedia. GoodDay (talk) 18:15, 13 December 2009 (UTC)
- Yes, this is the English language wikipedia - but in what way is that a rationale for this move? It's not as if the presence of diacritics means it could not be common English usage. Knepflerle (talk) 00:29, 14 December 2009 (UTC)
- I am used to seeing this player's name without the diacritics - some evidence of this would be nice, as it is the relative frequency which matters. Any arguments about the origins of their use are unsourced and irrelevant, however. Knepflerle (talk) 00:29, 14 December 2009 (UTC)
- The above discussion is preserved as an archive of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on this talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.
