Moving away from "stub" status

Behavioral genetics, as has been pointed out about, is an important and vital area of serious current study. If you go to this page Genetic Behavioral Theory, you will see another theory in behavioral genetics (hopefully one of many in time that will be featured here at Wiki). Let's see what we can make this into! What kind of scientists and scientific enthusiasts of Behavioral(/Behavioural) Genetics? The article A Kiwi refers to as "Genetic Behavioral Theory" is actually a piped link to User_talk:A_Kiwi/draft-NPA_Personality_Theory. That page is a userspace copy of NPA personality theory, which has been proposed for deletion on the grounds that it is a non-notable vanity article. —Psychonaut 01:09, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
Actually, you have it quite wrong. The theory article's nomination has absolutely ZERO to do with being a vanity article. That referred only to another biographical page of the author of the study. A truly minor point. The only validated concern about the article in questions was that the article on its own did not signify a theory of any particular notability. Rather like the research written about in this very article which could not stand alone outside its importance to the scientific field of behavioral genetics.
Be reassured. There are many who are familiar with the centuries of carefully detailed records concerning of breeding for behavioral characteristics. We know that personality IS inherited to a great extent. This is SCIENCE.
What was not as verifiable was whether Horney's theory was a true match for the inheritable components of personality in primates. Thank you for helping me raise interest in the field of behavioral genetics and about personality theory. --A green Kiwi in learning mode 02:40, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
It's odd that I "have it quite wrong"; when I checked the deletion nomination it said that "the articles on Anthony M. Benis and NPA personality theory (a personality theory invented by Anthony M. the genetics of canine temperment

I don't understand how this NPA personality theory piece of original research gets an A- (Quality) and Mid (Importance) from WikiProject Psychology. The idea that human personality is determined by a single Mendelian locus with three alleles is totally at odds with all modern behavioural genetics research into the topic, see introductory textbook such as Plomin et al's Behavioral Genetics (W H Freeman & Co.) for a review of empirical research on the topic. Hi Pete. The A- Quality was for the excellence of writing and presentation. the Mid-Importance was one of those things cooked up over a week or so with limited input of less than 10 human beings. You know how that goes. As for the genetic model being out of date, so is the genetic model of the fellow mentioned on the previous page. :o) But keep in mind that the day a textbook is published, it is already at least 10 years out of date. Any prof will admit to that.
It is quite likely - MORE than likely - that such a large component of human behavior could be explained by what is true in the genetic research papers I have read on canine genetics.
Are you aware that dog behavioral genetics are solely governed by the full or total expression, suppression or absence of dominance, territoriality and affiliation? It is such expression patterns that determine why all terriers vary from all hounds, and so on. Are you a geneticist? Majoring in genetics? Can you help explain to me why that is so? No I'm a professor that has taught undergraduate courses in behavioural genetics, I've published my research in journals such as Genes Brain & Behavior, Brain Behavior & Evolution, Animal Behaviour, Biological Psychology and Personality and Individual Differences... I cannot explain to you why "dog behavioral genetics are solely governed by the full or total expression, suppression or absence of dominance, territoriality and affiliation" because it's just such an oddly contrived thing to suggest. Do you have references that illustrate this way of thinking? I've got here three papers on behavioural genetics in dog that spent the last week sitting on my desk waiting for me to have time to read them. I'll take these as representative of present day science's take on the topic. They are: Badino et al 2004) Modifications of serotonergic and adrenergic receptor concentrations in the brain of aggressive Canis familiaris. Comp. Biochem. Physiol. A 139:343-350. Saetre et al (2004) From wild wolf to domestic dog: gene expression changes in the brain. Mol. Brain Res. 126:198-206. Masuda et al (2004) Sequencing of canine 5-hydroxytriptamine receptor (5-HTR) 1B, 2A, 2C genes and identification of polymorphisms in the 5-HTR1B gene. J. Vet. Med. Sci 66:965-972. Peter, can understand why you are all at sea here, seeing as how you are a professor of psychology, not of genetics, and that the reason you have those papers on your desk seems to do with your role in the allocation of research funds or something of that nature.
My own background is cellular microphysiology. The first paper you mention deals with possible modifications of neurotransmitter concentrations in the more aggressive breeds. The second paper is a more a philosophical comparison of present day wild wolves and present day dogs. The two species have been separated for so long, there is very little similar in temperment or social behaviors. The third paper is about identifying changes in gene structure. None of them, however, have anything to do with what veterinarians and researchers in the genetic precursers of dog temperment know to be true about why dogs are as they are.
What I still don't know is how you would explain to your classes about why behavioral traits such as these are genetically linked and how a breeder could introduce, intensify or eliminate such traits in a given line of canines. --A green Kiwi in learning mode 20:01, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
Just a thought, but I can see grounds for describing most hypotheses, of any kind as "oddly contrived things to suggest" until they are either proven or disproven. Speaking of which, surely a theory remains valid no matter how "out of date" it is perceived to be until it is disproven? Research often takes a wrong direction and has to backtrack to that which was previously perceived to be "out of date". --Zeraeph 12:44, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
Scientific theories are never proven or disproven in such a clear way. We know, for instance, that Einstein's theories are not entirely correct, but that doesn't mean that ptolomeic system retains any credibility. Just because several theories have been proposed, that does not mean any propsed theory will be credible. Hypotheses are made which are based on theories which make sense given the best evidence. People do research using personality constructs such as the Big Five personality traits because the model has empirical support and some degree of verisimilitude. The big five "works" that's why so much research is done using it as a conceptual framework, without necessarily embracing it as the one abolutely true personality structure. NPA personality theory is not used by any empirical researcher, that no one has "proven" the big five, or Catell's 16 Personality Factors deoesn't mean that it's a candidate on equal footing. That researchers have measured the heritability of the five dimentions of the five factor model in numerous empirical studies speaks to the usefulness of the idea. The NPA personality theory idea that a three allele single locus underlies personality is just not going anywhere, it's much like something someome made up at school one day. This article is heavily biased towards human quantitative genetics. Animal behavior genetics and (non-quantitative) human behavior genetics is heavily underrepresented. Only a minority of behavior geneticists is nowadays involved in estimating proportions of variance, "separating" effects of genes and environment, and such. Most are involved in researching the way genes influence behavior in a much more gene-physiological way.

Definition of Behavior Genetics

Currently the first paragraph states "Classically, behavioural geneticists have studied the heritability of behavioural traits". Actually, this is not correct. For many years, behaviour geneticists studied the inheritance of behaviour, which is certainly not the same thing. Selection, strain differences, and such were the things they looked at, as well as the offspring of crosses between lines and strains. In the latter, they studied the genetic architecture, a concept vastly more developed than "heritability". Only when human quantitative genetics started to gain prominence did some behaviour geneticists develop a focus on heritability.

Probability

Is it just me or does this article not make explicit that current research programs in bx genetics are based on finding probabilities of trait expression? I know there have been increasing numbers of studies where complete genomes are compared, but given that recent research is dabbling with the potential that even monozygotic twins don't have exactly the same genome (e.g., http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/02/080215121214.htm), it might be prudent for this article to mention more explicitly that bx genetics focuses on the rates of heritability within populations, and not specific individuals.Briholt (talk) 03:30, 15 April 2008 (UTC)


What's this article about

This article is about behavioural genetics surely? Why does it only discuss human behaviour and concentrate on eugenicist ideas? When I studies genetics at university, I studies animal behaviour and not human behaviour, because most behavioural research is done on laboratory animals. Etymology

A google test for "behavioral genetics" (as a phrase) yields 230,000 hits, whereas a test for "behavioural genetics" (as a phrase) yields 50,000 hits. Aye, but we're not debating whether to use the common name 'widget' or 'dongle'. We're debating how to spell the same word. The wikipedia:spelling guide is the appropriate guide, not Wikipedia:Naming_conventions_(common_names). My personal opinion on whether it is more appropriate to use US or English spelling differ from that in the spelling guide, but I think it is appropiate to follow it, by retaining 'Behaviour' in this case. Wikipedia:spelling doesn't appear to discuss the US/British spelling issue very much, but I think you're referring to the policy that pages should simply choose a spelling and stick with it. I appreciate the complexities of the spelling issue, but it seems like the policy in naming conventions of using the most common version applies to spelling when one version has such greater usage ("We want to maximize the likelihood of being listed in external search engines, thereby attracting more people to Wikipedia"). The ior ending has 5.5x the internet usage as the iour ending if we combine hits for Behavioral genetics and Behavior genetics (410,000), and combine hits for Behavioural genetics and Behaviour genetics (73,000).--Nectar T 00:42, 11 September 2005 (UTC)
I don't understand why redirects with alternate spellings aren't adequate. I personally would feel less enthusiastic about participating if US spelling were to be declared the official spelling of wikipedia. I'm not trying to paint you as the John Bolton of spelling, I do see your point, but I find it ironic when US spelling is advanced as a standard. Benjamin Frankin wanted to have a new language for his new country, A US English incomprehensible to non US English speakers. And launched his spelling reform as a start. Now, I have no fear of 'lite beer', 'drive thru' etc leading us to a tower of babel, but there is a sense in which US spelling was designed to be divisive. I may be a lone nut on this issue, and I would not advance it as a proposal, but if it were entirely up to me, I'd have so-called British spelling throughout, with US spelling redirects. Beyond just Google search results, both the Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk textbook and reference book results return more under the American "Behavioral" spelling than under the british "Behavioural" spelling. I infer this is more than likely because the majority of the research and publishing in the field is done in the U.S. As a result a redirect for "Behavioural" would be more appropriate as there will be fewer searches for it.Andrew (talk) 07:04, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

I think it is most logical to move this article to Quantitative human behavioural genetics. There's a fair bit that can be borrowed from heritability (they get a little into animal work) and twin study. Though the overlap makes one wonder which article the methods woudl best live in. I hope if we all chip away at this it will grow.

Galton

I added a sentence which simply repeats what is reported in the Galton article, so does not need another citation. What is the problem? His work Hereditary Genius, devotes much space to asserting that "genius" runs in families and should be encouraged, an argument that ends by discouraging the reproduction of lesser mortals. I have removed your edit again. You can't cite Galton to back up the statement that Galton's work is controversial and led to eugenics. DeFries of course did a lot of mouse genetics, and many animal studies and their findings are described in (especially) one chapter of the book. Other sources would be useful for more on the non-human animal side of research; this new book does a lot meanwhile to update most of what is in the Wikipedia article at the moment. -- WeijiBaikeBianji (talk, how I edit) 14:00, 29 October 2013 (UTC)
Most of DeFries animal work is rather old, of course. The more recent stuff was basically Jon Flint using his mice. Most animal stuff covered in Behavior Genetics, Molecular Psychiatry, Genes, Brain and Behavior, or the Journal of Neurogenetics never was adequately covered in the book. It also ignores most of what happens in between genes and behavior. Of course, the last ones to do this were basically Fuller and Thompson, I'm not sure you could nowadays produce a single volume textbook covering all of BG. --Randykitty (talk) 14:47, 29 October 2013 (UTC)
There are a lot of citations to the newer authors in the extensive references in the current sixth edition of the textbook. That's part of the issue I have with that book: the "newer authors". A lot of animal BG was done continuously from the early studies in the early 1900s on the Drosophila gene yellow until nowadays. If you read this book, you get the impression that animal work was abandoned somewhere in the 70s and only re-started recently... Anyway, you're right of course that other references can (and should) be included in this article, too. And the article obviously needs a lot of work and expansion, it's way too short... NPOV and Citation issues (Criticisms and controversies)

Hello, I added the NPOV and 'citations needed' templates to this section, for statements such as "Indeed, race is a social construct that is not very useful for genetic research" and "fringe research groups have claimed that observed racial differences on a behavioral trait are a product of racial differences in allele frequencies". These are big claims to make since research out of universities has also found similar results, it's not just "fringe research groups" (who exactly? no citation provided) who have focused on this.

This area doesn't just highlight the criticisms, it makes it sound like the criticisms are fact. Knocking down small methodological flaws is a favourite past-time of social and political scientists, journalists, the ideologically motivated... but it doesn't discredit the wider body of scientific evidence that genes play a role too.

  • I'm well aware of that case, and my issues with this section still remain valid. It's pretty clear that ancestry is separate from race - which is where the genetic differences emerge. There is more genetic variance in Africa than there is in all 'white' peoples combined. So yes it is silly to make judgements purely on skin color or appearance - you'd actually need to know the ancestral lineage. The genetics of Swedish people are quite different to those in the United Kingdom. You can clearly see there are different genetic make-ups in different ethnicities when you consider lactose intolerance. Some estimates: African American and Asian ethnicities see a 75% - 95% lactose intolerance rate, while northern Europeans have a lower rate at 18% - 26% lactose intolerance. You linked the Nat Geo articles, which were deemed blatant attempts to atone for their very old articles which were indeed racist. If you'd like a more scientific explanation I'd recommend David Reich's piece in The NY Times. Sxologist (talk) 07:46, 7 June 2020 (UTC)
I think for this article, as it is a WP:GA, it's best we avoid tags that are overly sweeping. There are inline tags that can be used for problems with specific sentences. With regard to sources, I know of an article about race where an administrator forbade journalistic sources. That was a good move. Providing some context or reference would be helpful. Are you suggesting that folks who are (currently) other than fringe are promoting the idea that racial differences in intelligence are a function of genetic differences? Proving that latter claim to the skeptic would be a tough row to hoe, indeed. I have attempted to source the other statement with which you take issue. Thanks again for the discussion. While it's true that fringe groups go extremely overboard in the belief that differences are entirely genetic... the likes of Robert Plomin say there are differences along ancestral grounds (he correctly calls it 'populations'). David Reich also expressed these views in the NY Times. Similarly, Nobel Prize winner James Watson believes there are differences between racial/ancestral groups. I'm not sure they qualify as fringe. Additionally, 52 university professors described as "experts in intelligence and allied fields" signed the Mainstream Science on Intelligence statement affirming the likelihood of differences across populations. They all held post at major universities. So it's probably not just "fringe research groups". While we all can agree this is unpleasant, chalking it up to 'fringe groups' isn't a very accurate representation if some experts also believe it to be possible. Got it, thanks. I think for sure the existence of group mean differences for common measures of IQ is not really debated. What is also not debated (other than by fringe groups, according to the sentence at least), is that the etiology of these differences is unclear, and cannot readily be attributed to genetics, versus all the things race is correlated with. The latter point - that only fringe groups claim that race differences are due to genetic differences - is the point this section is making, probably not very clearly given the discussion. Do we agree? If so, how can we make the section clearer? (Not to digress, but the Watson argument belies the point. Race differences and their etiology is pretty much utterly outside his wheelhouse, a Nobel prize not withstanding. Watson would in that sense be fringe on the etiology of group differences in IQ. Reich would be similar. Eminent scientist, but of course not in all areas of science and especially those in which he/they do not conduct research, IMHO. Plomin of course is expert in this area and mainstream, but I can't imagine he has ever argued that race differences are caused by differences in genetics.) Vrie0006 (talk) 15:49, 10 June 2020 (UTC)

  • No one is doubting there is debate over it. I simply don't think it's honest to claim that only fringe/groups and researchers believe in IQ / ethnic differences. It's important that Wikipedia isn't just a mouthpiece for people to debunk ideas they don't like. I don't think any mainstream professor who notes average IQ differences among ethnic groups claims its entirely genetic. Eh, attempts to draw a link between biological causes and differences between races are pretty sketchy. A big part of the issue is that "race" has no biological meaning. I agree with everything you said. My issue isn’t with the comments on race, it’s with the wider attack on behavioural genetics as a whole which is relatively sound science at this point much to the dismay of sociologists. My point was that the tone in this section does read like a personal essay. And agree about removing uncited sentences. It should just be shortened to what is known/unknown instead of launching into a debunked claim about identical twins being the same because they’re treated similar (a favourite of sociologists) while ignoring the studies of twins separated at birth. Galton

I added a sentence which simply repeats what is reported in the Galton article, so does not need another citation. What is the problem? His work Hereditary Genius, devotes much space to asserting that "genius" runs in families and should be encouraged, an argument that ends by discouraging the reproduction of lesser mortals. DeFries of course did a lot of mouse genetics, and many animal studies and their findings are described in (especially) one chapter of the book. Most of DeFries animal work is rather old, of course. The more recent stuff was basically Jon Flint using his mice. Most animal stuff covered in Behavior Genetics, Molecular Psychiatry, Genes, Brain and Behavior, or the Journal of Neurogenetics never was adequately covered in the book. It also ignores most of what happens in between genes and behavior. Of course, the last ones to do this were basically Fuller and Thompson, I'm not sure you could nowadays produce a single volume textbook covering all of BG. --Randykitty (talk) 14:47, 29 October 2013 (UTC)
There are a lot of citations to the newer authors in the extensive references in the current sixth edition of the textbook. That's part of the issue I have with that book: the "newer authors". A lot of animal BG was done continuously from the early studies in the early 1900s on the Drosophila gene yellow until nowadays. If you read this book, you get the impression that animal work was abandoned somewhere in the 70s and only re-started recently... Anyway, you're right of course that other references can (and should) be included in this article, too. And the article obviously needs a lot of work and expansion, it's way too short... Sources for updates of article--thanks for previous suggestions of sources

Wikipedia has a lot of interesting articles based on the ongoing research in behavior genetics, both in humans and in nonhuman animals. I've been reading university textbooks on genetics "for fun" since the 1980s, and for even longer I've been visiting my state flagship university's vast BioMedical Library to look up topics on human medicine and health care policy. That university has long been a center of research on human behavior genetics, being the site of a major study of monozygotic twins reared apart. On the hypothesis that better sources build better articles as all of us here collaborate to build an encyclopedia, I thought I would suggest some sources for updating the articles on behavior genetics and related topics. The Wikipedia guidelines on reliable sources in medicine provide a helpful framework for evaluating sources.

The guidelines on reliable sources for medicine remind editors that "it is vital that the biomedical information in all types of articles be based on reliable, third-party, published sources and accurately reflect current medical knowledge."

Ideal sources for such content includes literature reviews or systematic reviews published in reputable medical journals, academic and professional books written by experts in the relevant field and from a respected publisher, and medical guidelines or position statements from nationally or internationally recognised expert bodies.

The guidelines, consistent with the general Wikipedia guidelines on reliable sources, remind us that all "Wikipedia articles should be based on reliable, published secondary sources" (emphasis in original). They helpfully define a primary source in medicine as one in which the authors directly participated in the research or documented their personal experiences. By contrast, a secondary source summarizes one or more primary or secondary sources, usually to provide an overview of the current understanding of a medical topic. The general Wikipedia guidelines let us know that "Articles should rely on secondary sources whenever possible. For example, a review article, monograph, or textbook is better than a primary research paper. When relying on primary sources, extreme caution is advised: Wikipedians should never interpret the content of primary sources for themselves."

Other Wikipedians who watch this Behavioural genetics article did all of us a great favor on the article talk page by suggesting helpful sources. In particular, User:Pete.Hurd suggested an authoritative textbook on behavior genetics, covering both the human and the animal research, and following up on his suggestion led me to several other helpful sources with similar subject cataloging in libraries.

Noting that Behavioural genetics is listed as a start-class, high-importance article by the WikiProjects for both genetics and psychology, I will start a workpage of an article update draft in my user space, relying on the sources recommended on the article talk page and on others listed here (in approximate order of date of publication, which is also almost but not exactly the order in which I have read them over the last few years):

There are many useful review articles and overview news stories from peer-reviewed scientific journals that meet the WP:MEDRS guidelines and are very useful sources for updating articles about behavior genetics (and I encourage Wikipedians to suggest others besides those listed here).

Some more general reference books about genetics or behavior also touch on behavior genetics issues through book chapters.

Recent merges

I'm not happy at all about the recent merges to this article, much as I appreciate the hard work that it represents. It would have been better to discuss such a drastic thing first on the talk pages. I think that this has resulted in a very unbalanced article, giving very undue weight to human behavioural genetics. The contemporary section, for example, is now solely about human research. Also, psychiatric genetics is important enough to require a separate article and really is much different from the main field of human behaviour genetics (in many respects being much closer to much of the current animal behaviour genetics work). For one thing, our psychiatric genetics colleagues seem to think the brain (or other biological factors) has something to do with behaviour, believe it or not, a revolutionary idea that's only very slowly gaining ground among mainstream human behaviour geneticists. In any case, psychiatric genetics is to behaviour genetics what medicine is to biology. Doing away with a separate article on human BG is a bad idea, too. Human BG uses very different methods from animal or psychiatric work. It needs to be mentioned in this article, obviously, but with a hatnote in that section directing readers to the main article, which should have remained as it is. As a final note, I find it rather weird to "merge" talk pages. I have restored the talk pages at human BG and PG, but have not reverted here, as meanwhile some of them have been archived here (improperly, I'd say), so it's getting too much work to undo that mess. --Randykitty (talk) 12:04, 3 January 2014 (UTC)

btw, as you can imagine, i think the merges i did were a dramatic improvement. All three of these articles were full of unsourced OR and contained lots of overlapping content. Together - and with much of the unsourced/or content edited out, they make a decent base from which to think about where to go next and present something reasonable to readers while we think. Jytdog, I agree with you that the current articles are not very good and need cleanup/expansion/sources/etc. However, I also think that having three separate articles is better than one, because there is much that can be added to these articles and one single article would be too large. In current practice, there is not much interaction between human behaviour geneticists on the one hand and animal behaviour geneticists and psychiatric geneticists on the other. Even if that were not the case, I think it is good to have one article on behaviour genetics as a field and one on psychiatric genetics, which is not really a subfield of BG but the intersection of BG with psychiatry. Although I am all for bold editing, I think you just went a bit fast here. As for the talk pages, I've never seen those merged and, in fact, WP:MERGE doesn't say anything about it while WP:MERGETEXT seems to implicitly say not to do it. I think the Talk-page merge thing is a bit surprising as well, but in the context of a different set of articles somebody made some strong arguments that if you merge content you should merge Talk so all the discussion about all the content is together. Made sense to me so I do it now. Thank you, Jytdog, for coming here to discuss with us. I appreciate your willingness to help clean up a situation that you correctly called a "mess" over on the other talk page. You and Randykitty have both seen the source lists I've posted recently, of course, and it seems to me that there are ample sources for a substantial article expansion of this Behavioural genetics article, which would very logically then link to an expanded subarticle Human behavior genetics. You and I are both wrapping our minds around what to do next over at the article that I call Nature and nurture (which is recently titled Nature versus nurture) and how it relates to the numerous articles that link to it all over Wikipedia, and I'd be delighted to hear Randykitty's input on that. I promise today that I will keep you informed about my plans on article talk pages or project talk pages or both. I plan to edit user space drafts (and I will let each of you see those, if you like, and in any event they will from time to time show up in my contribs list) to meticulously expand this article and also Human behavior genetics with an aim to getting both of those articles into shape for good article submission. I previously noticed that the main article Human genetics is also remarkably short and lacking in sources for such an important topic, so that article is on my list too to be expanded. In general, I am currently hunting up articles within the scope of those identified by either WikiProject Psychology or WikiProject Genetics as "start-class, high-importance" articles to apply sources to those for major expansions. I don't see a great need for article mergers among the articles I watch, as any of these articles will get up comfortably close to the recommended Wikipedia article size limit if only they are thoroughly sourced. I agree that Nature and nurture is an especially puzzling article to plan for in this context, because it is so multidisciplinary and so wikilinked to so many other articles, but again I think that reliable sources will show the way forward. I'll be doing some further reading additions to several articles that have long been on my watchlist today, and also updating my source lists over this weekend. My weekend plans also include a lengthy university library visit to gather more sources, including the sources kindly mentioned by Randykitty. I will make best efforts to stay in communication with all of you interested editors about what I expect to do next in what order. A Google Books search reveals that the term "Genetic psychology" in the context of the history of the philosophy of mind is much discussed in recent academic publications. WP:DLINKS says:" disambiguation links should be placed at the top of an article, where they are most visible. For alternatives that are related to the article but are not a source of ambiguity, the 'See also' section at the end of the article is more appropriate." Brentano's concept of genetic psychology is not an alternative to behavioural genetics; it is something very different from the actual topic of the behavioural genetics article. Pete.Hurd I respect your opinions on issues like this very much, but the article here, Behavioural genetics, includes all the work on model organisms like fruit flies and mice and dogs, and there are whole books (mentioned by another participant in these talk page discussions) that provide good sourcing for that aspect of the research. So I think this article serves as a good place to give an overview of all behavioural genetics research, while the other article can provide the more specific discussion of human research. Perhaps some bold edits here (and there) will show what is possible. WeijiBaikeBianji is that who I think it is? We first met reading Richard Nisbett's book for a journal club seminar led by a wonderful prof at a university that will be unamed. That was the first time you sat in on the seminar. Ring a bell? You may not remember me -- I was one of said prof's grad students. Let's merge the articles. Although honestly I don't know what that entails because I've made a bout a dozen edits to wikipedia, but the existence of a separate human behavioral genetics page is very odd. Why rush to merge the articles? Because of how Wikipedia technology works, merging is somewhat inherently disruptive. They will eventually have to be unmerged anyway, as Wikipedia grows articles about every genuinely encyclopedic topic, and articles about many topics that are not encyclopedic besides. How many of the sources do you have at hand? (P.S., yes, I have an inference about who you might be in real life based on what you wrote about meeting in real life.) Welcome aboard Wikipedia.   • Not sure a merger is a good idea. Neither article is very good at the moment and both are too much slanted towards human work. There's a lot of animal behavior genetics out there that is not covered anywhere. My advice would be to expand and improve both articles, avoiding overlap as much as possible (Galton, for example). Historically, animal behavior genetics was much more important than human behavior genetics. The latter has been IMHO a rather sterile field for a long time (mainly interested in ways to partition variance and estimating heritabilities, as if that tells you something worth while...) and only recently do we see the field moving towards identifying genes and even (gasp!) some of the underlying biological processes (sometimes it seems like most human behavior geneticists have never heard of the brain...) The amount of animal behavior genetics published nowadays is still vastly larger than human behavior genetics, but it's not always very visible as such, because most animal behavior geneticists have "gone mainstream" and call themselves (behavioral) neuroscientists. Look at Eric Kandel's work, for example, or Susumu Tonegawa's. All about genes and behavior, but nobody calls it behavior genetics anymore... --Randykitty (talk) 14:43, 12 April 2016 (UTC)
  • In the same spirit as above, I have to say that I don't think the article is currently moving in the right direction. The section on "Nature of environmental influence" that was just added, for example, is only about human behaviour genetics. This article should be a balanced view of the whole field, not just a part of it. We don't discuss research with, say, diallel crosses or knockout mice here either.   • I totally agree that it would be wonderful to have a better representation of animal BG research on this page and an ultimate goal is to avoid a page that is dominated by human work. Animal research has been such an integral part of the field that is in many ways far more advanced than human work, especially perhaps in understanding biological mechanisms in between the DNA and phenotype (?). Unfortunately, no one with expertise in that area seems to be actively contributing to the page. Since the page has been languishing for years, with few contributors and little useful information, my hope is that folks with expert content knowledge can contribute what they know as time goes by, regardless of how the page is balanced at any given time, with the ultimate goal that human and non-human work is sufficiently covered in the end. Hopefully some people who know about major methods and results from animal BG work will contribute and link to other relevant pages. (Maybe the overly-human content will motivate them!) I can't do that, unfortunately, because I don't know that work well enough. But I'd hate to stop contributing the encyclopedic knowledge I have about BG as I wait for someone else to contribute animal work and balance the page, as that person may not show up!   • I certainly am not suggesting that you should stop expanding on human stuff! But I think it would be better to add things like the section on "Nature of environmental influence" to the article on human behaviour genetics than here. I would keep this article as given a bird's eye view of the field, putting all the more specialized stuff in separate articles. Otherwise this article would become way too unwieldy once animal geneticists start filling in their stuff. As for the latter, I agree that it would be desirable if people would start doing that, kind of in parallel with your efforts, but it is not really necessary. History of numbers of papers published

Interesting addition, hadn't seen that article yet (but then, I rarely look at "in press" articles, I wait until they are in a regular issue :-). However, I'm not sure that the way this is currently presented is ideal. For one, the table is not found in the reference given (I guess you took it from the Excel file linked in the last sentence of the article - not sure as I have trouble opening it). A second problem is that the table singles out Behavior Genetics, which I think is undue. Why not also add other journals from this field (see "journals" section)? I actually think that instead of this table, we should copy figure 1 from the article in BG (we can do this because at the end the article notes that it is published under a CC-BY license, so we can copy anything we want over to Commons). Fig. 2 would be a good fit for our article on human BG and Fig 3 could eventually go into an article on animal BG, if ever we get one. The figures do a much better job than the table in conveying the enormous growth of this field. Of course (and this is a criticism of the BG article), what would be really interesting would be to know whether this growth is larger than how all scientific output has been growing. --Randykitty (talk) 14:36, 20 April 2016 (UTC)

The graphs would be great, although maybe a little hard to read as a thumbnail. I like including the journal behavior genetics because it was the first journal in the modern era devoted to behavioral genetic research, is a significant part of the the formation of the Behavior Genetics Association, which was central to the resurgance of BG. Nature Genetics and the other journals (afaik) don't have that king of longstanding historical relationship with BG. Also, and you may like this, initially had lots of human and non-human content. I plan to continue expanding the history section to include some of this historical content, at least very briefly, so I think having the behavior genetics journal make sense. If people are interested in a graph, all they need do is click it and they'll see an enlarged version. I maintain that the graphs are clearer. I don't agree with your reasoning for including BG to the exclusion of every other journal. BG and the BGA are not the only journals/organizations in this field, there is also Genes, Brain and Behavior/IBANGS. G2B has had a larger IF than BG since it got its first one and consistently publishes more articles than BG does. In addition, it looks like the table is (inadmissible) original research, because it cannot be found in this form in the publication cited. As an aside (and this is not something that can be used in the article, as this is my OR :-) I am a bit critical of the Ayorech et al. article. They used articles published in BG to "train" their search criteria. I am sure that this will have caused a tremendous underestimation of animal work, as BG has traditionally been very weak in, for example, KO/transgenic studies or gene-expression studies. Of course, most people doing that type of work don't see themselves as behavior geneticists and thus don't submit to a journal named "Behavior Genetics". As Sandra Scarr once wrote, behavior genetics has won "the war" (i.e. recognition that genes can influence behavior) but in the process has lost its identity as the study of genetic effects on behavior has gone mainstream. Just look at any neuroscience journal (especially behavioral neuroscience journals) and see the vast number of studies reporting the behavioral effects of knocking out some gene... Anyway, to come back to our original point, I think that the table should go and be replaced with Fig 2. --Randykitty (talk) 14:40, 29 April 2016 (UTC)
PS: I finally managed to open that database and cannot find the numbers of papers published by Behavior Genetics, although you'd probably be able to tease it out of that huge amount of data. So that makes this table not only undue, but also inadmissible original research. Behaviour genetics, per se, gained recognition as a research discipline with the publication in 1960 of the textbook Behavior Genetics by John L. Fuller and William Robert (Bob) Thompson (then Chair of the Department of Psychology at Queen's University, Canada).[1] Nowadays, it is widely accepted that most behaviours in animals and humans are under some degree of genetic influence.[2]

The textbook itself cannot be a source for the fact that the field gained recognition via the textbook. That is pure OR. The "nowadays" violates WP:RELTIME and is in any case sourced to paper published in 1989 - 27 years ago. (and that paper is not even in pubmed - why not use PMID 2183351 at least? Just a note that one improvement to the History section might be an account of behavioral genetics as a response to (whether intentional or not) behavioral theories in the 50's, 60's and 70's that attributed behavior to learning and environmental experiences (the "schizophrenogenic mother", for example). Lead

I appreciate the efforts going into the lead. However, as with so much in this article, it is biased towards human BG. There was significant animal BG research going on before and after WWII (some names: Tryon, Hall) and this research was hardly hampered by any association with eugenics. And animal BG has had a much smaller focus (if at all) on separating genetic from environmental effects (for the last 20 years, you'll be hard pressed to find the word "heritability" in most of the animal BG literature). (As an aside, the linked articles on behavioral epigenetics and neurogenetics have both been the victim of educational assignments and are seriously deficient). Selective breeding was popular in the early days, but my bet is that strain comparisons and cross-breeding studies (using classical and diallel crosses) were much more popular. GWAS has been important (again) for huma n studies, but for animal BG, it was the advent of transgenic and KO technology that opened up the field to many new researchers (who generally don't see themselves as behavior geneticists, but as neuroscientists). --Randykitty (talk) 22:08, 12 December 2016 (UTC)

I'm sorry, but far as I can see, going for GA is very premature here. This article is still extremely unbalanced, with giving animal research just a few lines and then concentrating on human work. Didn't you see my comment on the talk page? No way that an unbalanced article like this is GA. 4 lines on animal research which represents at least half of all research on behavior genetics is absolutely insufficient. Just look at the tables of contents of the major journals in the field (Behavior Genetics (journal) and Genes, Brain and Behavior). Even the part on humans is not really balanced. From the article it seems like quantitative genetics is the major approach, even for psychiatric disorders. This is incorrect. While it is true for BG research on normal human behavior, there's a huge amount of research on the genetics of psychiatric disorders that doesn't even mention heritabilities (see the contents of journals like Molecular Psychiatry or American Journal of Medical Genetics Part B: Neuropsychiatric Genetics). Sorry to be so negative. I do appreciate all the work that has been done and the article is better than it was before. I saw that you had edited the article, Randykitty, I presumed your concerns of December 12 were addressed. Keep in mind that GA is not FA; there is a difference between "Broad in its coverage; it addresses the main aspects of the topic" (GA criteria) and "comprehensive: it neglects no major facts or details and places the subject in context" (FA Criteria). The article is not ready for FAC, but it meets the GA criteria. That said, there is nothing stopping anyone from making further improvements and I encourage them to do so. Thank you both. Is anyone interested in coordinating this effort? I feel like we're on the verge of an opportunity to make this page very good. I have little expertise in this area but am happy to read through those sources and adapt the content for wikipedia, but I think others could do a much better job. For some reason, for this page, there is not much of a development community. My suspicion is that, with the exception of a few, there are not many individuals invested in animal behavioral genetics who actually think of their work as behavioral genetics (as opposed to neuroscience writ large). As I said earlier, there are several reasons why I don't want to contribute to this page in any significant way. And you're certainly right that many people doing BG don't think of themselves as behavioral geneticists but simply as (behavioral) neuroscientists. You don't see the same development at the human side and I think (but this is interpretation, no RS says this) that this indicates that animal BG is now fundamentally a part of mainstream neuroscience. Thirty years ago, most neuroscience research (and most behavioral research) was done with genetically undefined animals (Wistar rats, Swiss-Webster mice, etc). Nowadays, a huge chunk of neuroscience is done on genetically-modified animals and, after a long and hard battle, the importance of the genetic background on which a mutation (genetic modification) is expressed is recognized, at least in the sense that people try to use littermate controls and backcross their mutants to a standard inbred strain (mostly C57BL/6J). Even people doing QTL studies of behavior think of themselves more as neuroscientists than as behavior geneticists. Many years ago Sandra Scarr published a commentary in Behavior Genetics with the title "Three cheers for behavior genetics: Winning the war and losing our identity". While I think that her cheers were premature, animal BG has definitely reached the stage where she thought human BG was at that time (but I don't think it was). OK, sorry for this long personal musing... Here's one more source, an excellent sociological study of (mostly human) BG. Remove "hyper" detail on twin studies

Question - Several people have said that there's too much detail on twin studies but no one has taken that detail out of the article. Human behaviour genetics being merged here

I know this has been discussed already on this page, but I feel that it should be revived since the last discussion here appears to have been >2 years ago. I think Human behaviour genetics should be merged to this page, since it has little useful content that is not already included on this page. The alternative would be to remove a bunch of human stuff from this page, copy it onto human behaviour genetics, and then do the same for animal behaviour genetics, which of course would need to be created first. Then we could have this article just be about the really basic stuff that both human and animal BG have in common and just brief summaries (WP:SUMMARYSTYLE) of human and animal BG separately with links to the main articles. What do others think? Should the human BG page be merged, or a new animal BG page be created, or neither? (Note also the merge discussion I previously started on Talk:Human behaviour genetics.)   • I agree the formulae for twin studies could get the axe (two people have now criticized the page for those formulae), but that's not a good reason to move all this content to human BG. I think this page should be expanded to include animal work, which I suppose will happen some day, maybe even by randykitty, and only if the page becomes too long should it be split. Heritability of a trait with no variation

I rolled back the recent edit b/c I don't see why it belongs in the criticism and controversies section. That heritability as it is usually defined is no longer defined when there is no variation in the phenotype doesn't seem like a problem, criticism, or controversy. Recent addition of "Top 10" list of replicated findings

I'm not sure the entire 10-item list needs to be there. The list sort of comes out of nowhere and no individual item is subsequently described in more detail. It ends up being somewhat jarring. I think the list could be deleted without much loss of content, or it could be integrated in a way that "flows" with the rest of that section and with the article itself. Short description

I saw that this excellent article did not have a short description so I wrote one. But then I thought it wasn't clear enough, so I revised it. I then wondered, "this revision is too wordy, maybe the first one was better?" Given my uncertainty, I concluded that more minds are better than one. Thus this Talk page section.

My first short description (diff) was: "Scientific research investigating genetic-environment interactions influencing human behaviour", and the revision (diff), which is the current short description, is: "Scientific research investigating the interaction of genetic and environmental factors that influence human behaviour."

As I indicated, I'm now thinking the first one is better. What do you think? (If you are confident that one of my versions, or your own construction, is superior, please do edit the short description.
