Moved to South Africa aged 14

[edit]

From article in The Telegraph: [1] - Froome’s Kenyan background features English grandparents who emigrated to run a farm and a father who branched out into running safaris. The family moved to South Africa when he was 14 and it is there that he received his introduction to cycling, moved from mountain biking to “road racing on those things with thin tyres” as he puts it. Stevo1000 (talk) 23:48, 24 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I thought he had a slight accent. --Somchai Sun (talk) 17:28, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Major wins in infobox

[edit]

I would contend that the Tour of Oman is a recent addition to the cycling calendar, and a early season conditioning event that is not a major focus of anybody's season. It is not a major race, therefore victory in it is not a major win, and it should not be noted in the infobox. It should, of course, be in the palmares section of the article. Kevin McE (talk) 13:33, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The race is classified by the UCI as 2.HC which makes it a major win. It was also Froome's first stage race win.Racklever (talk) 14:30, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
HC ranking is below GT rating, and below WT category: there are 14 stage races that are regarded as more important. Not major races, same category as VDK-Driedaagse De Panne-Koksijde, Presidential Tour of Turkey, Exergy Tour or Quingai Lake. Being his first win does not make it a major race. Kevin McE (talk) 15:36, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Flag in infobox

[edit]

In the info box for the 2012 Olympics Chris is down as a competitor for Kenya, From what I can remember, and what it says in the main part of the article he competed for team GB at the games. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.132.221.68 (talk) 05:49, 20 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You're misreading it - the Kenya flag refers to the All-Africa Games (shown below it) when he was still registered as a Kenyan. -- Daemonic Kangaroo (talk) 05:53, 20 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Does he hold dual citizenship? Jim Michael (talk) 13:16, 23 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Bilharzia

[edit]

What's about this. It's very important to understand his career to say when he starts to medicate, talk about his medic exception, talk about his VO2 stats in 2011. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.156.102.111 (talk) 13:01, 24 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I've added and modified a few details about the disease. I think it's important that we note that any comments on its effects on his career are speculative. --Super Nintendo Chalmers (talk) 13:44, 24 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

British

[edit]

The first line of the lead describes Chris Froome solely as British. Is this accurate? Should he not be described as 'Kenyan-British' in the lead (being born and raised in Kenya)? I'm aware that he describes himself as 'feeling British' (to paraphrase), but is a 'feeling' really an objective defining factor for someone's sole-nationality? I'm mainly concerned about undue weight being put on British; as compared to other sportsmen described as 'British', Froome's connection is relatively tenuous. (Cesdeva (talk) 12:01, 4 September 2014 (UTC))[reply]

Froome has an article here because he's a cyclist, and in professional cycling he represents Great Britain, therefore he's a British cyclist. BaldBoris 13:49, 4 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not doubting his notability. If he represents Great Britain then he's a 'professional cyclist who represents Great Britain', not necessarily a solely British cyclist. The usage of British in the first line is misleading in this case. (Cesdeva (talk) 18:08, 4 September 2014 (UTC))[reply]
Do you have proof he holds Kenyan citizenship? My father was born in Cyprus to a British family - he never acquired Cypriot citizenship and was not bought up as a Cypriot - calling him a "Cypriot" anything would be plainly inaccurate - even "Cypriot-born" which would imply he was born a Cypriot but happened to move to another country, which is simply not the case. "British, born in Cyprus" would be about it. What is Froome's status? --86.166.155.194 (talk) 15:23, 25 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Still he was born and raised in Kenya, then moved to South Africa, there's no reason calling him "british", the correct term would be "Kenian-british".
He was born in Kenya so he is obviously Kenyan-born British.--Racklever (talk) 21:48, 26 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
"here's no reason calling him "british", the correct term would be "Kenian-british"." - I respectfully disagree. Froome's notability clearly stems from being a British sportsperson alone, and we have already ascertained that he considers himself British. "Kenyan-born" seems to be the way to go, as it isn't denying his place of birth (heritage is questionable as he wasn't bought up in a truly Kenyan family, so to speak).--109.149.137.113 (talk) 17:56, 27 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
"Kenya-born", maybe; "Kenyan-born", no—unless reliable sources are presented to clarify Froome's citizenship status in Kenya. Froome said in 2012: "Although I was riding under the Kenyan flag I made it clear that I had always carried a British passport and felt British"—so it seems he was born a British citizen ("British-born") in any case. The wording "Kenyan-born British" is problematic for me for a few reasons, but the main one is that it's so damned vague. We mean that he started his career competing for Kenya, then switched to Britain, but that wording could equally mean he was born in Kenya and moved to Britain as a two-year-old (like a certain Mr Wiggins). I've been WP:BOLD and changed the opening sentence to "British professional road racing cyclist ... who competed for Kenya until 2008". Coupled with the mention lower down in the opening paragraph that he was "brought up in Kenya and South Africa", I think this accurately and succinctly summarises the proper situation. Hope this is okay with everyone. Cheers, —  Cliftonian (talk)  08:53, 14 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I think that's a good way to deal with it. Severo (talk) 19:13, 14 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry to open this up again, but he was born in Kenya, grew up in Kenya (secondary school in South Africa) and represented Kenya numerous times (which you cannot do if you are not a citizen). Note - if you are born in Kenya you are a citizen even if you have a British passport (colonial legacy) something you can automatically reacquire even if you leave the country up to the age of 24. I don't see up until perhaps 2007+ he could be regarded as anything else than Kenyan. I think the correct term given Froome was a dual-citizen and represented both countries is:
"Froome is a Kenyan/British cyclist" 2001:8003:70F5:2400:9AC:3EE5:DA86:8D07 (talk) 18:17, 18 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
In his autobiography he states that he surrendered his kenyan passport in order to ride for Great Britain. Firestar47 (talk) 21:43, 8 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Tour de France - possibly too detailed?

[edit]

Is there perhaps a little too much detail on Chris's TdF performances? The races have their own very comprehensive entries, and it might be an idea to cut the biography back to a more manageable length. Otherwise, his future performances will make the bio extraordinarily long. Bollystolly (talk) 12:19, 15 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Physiology section

[edit]

Froome's physical training figures are not a riposte to allegations of doping but are presented as if they are.

>>> Well clearly, it was his (or his Teams) riposte to the allegations!

Weight

[edit]

Claimed weights are basically a meaningless number. I proposed some time ago that the field be removed from tennis player infoboxes, and this was agreed. I have now proposed the same for cyclist infoboxes. Please see Template talk:infobox cyclist. 2.28.152.23 (talk) 22:00, 30 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, weight can actually change from the time sources give them in the stats. Association footballers do not have their weights in their infoboxes, and the agreed propose on tennis players has taken place. Weights can become unreliable from time to time due to the eating and exercise they do - fluctuating the weight values. The same cannot be said to rugby union players - some of them have weight data listed in their infoboxes. If I find any, this should also be removed. Iggy (talk) 15:41, 9 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
They are more important in cycling than in other sports since there are a lot of mountains to climb. It is a commonly used field in template:Infobox cyclist. --Racklever (talk) 16:38, 9 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
This is a discussion for Template talk:Infobox cyclist, not here. I will also revert the removal of the field here - if consensus is to remove, this can be done globally from Template:Infobox cyclist. Severo (talk) 21:48, 10 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Severo & Racklever - I did not realise that weight is an important field here - you are certainly have better knowledge on cycling than me. Iggy (talk) 15:40, 13 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Introduction

[edit]

Being able to survive one cobbled stage in Tour de France hardly makes a general classification stage racer rider an "all-rounder", and if there is a source claiming he was "initially regarded as a climbing specialist" it's definitely not sourced in this article. Kittens n thugs (talk) 23:31, 5 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding the introduction it also states that on joining Sky he quickly became established as a key rider in the team. This is untrue. He was one of the lesser riders on the fringes until he won the Vuelta at the end of 2011. Before that race they were thinking of dropping him in fact he was only even called up to the Vuelta at all because someone else got sick. Firestar47 (talk) 21:31, 8 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

In terms of Sky as a team two years out of 10 years is quickly I would say. Paulpat99 (talk) 00:26, 9 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sky weren't that different but in any case what team it is doesn't matter. So far as professional cycling goes 'quickly became established as a key rider' is inferring within the first few races of a season or contract. Unless there are any objections to it I will do an edit. Firestar47 (talk) 21:47, 12 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Barloworld

[edit]

The section on his early career claims Barloworld were a british based team. Pretty sure this is wrong. They may have been registered as british in later seasons but they were based in Italy or at the very least based in Italy for anything to do with the cycling side of things. (My source for that is the autobiographies of Froome and Steve Cummings.) Firestar47 (talk) 21:49, 8 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

When Froome rode for Barloworld the team was registered in Great Britain. So being British based is correct. PCS has it as British:[1][2] Cheers Paulpat99 (talk) 00:28, 9 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Registered and based are 2 different things. I know they were registered as British in later years but that wasn't where they were based, they were based in Tuscany. Firestar47 (talk) 19:31, 11 April 2023 (UTC) I don't know why they changed the registration (I assume it was a tax or advertising based decision) but the team were still based in Italy.Firestar47 (talk) 19:39, 11 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

just to say again for anyone reading this I have cited my sources above. I cannot give a page reference for Froome because I don't any longer have the book but the Barloworld bit in Cummings is p53 onward. he mentions where they were several times starting on page 53. Michelle Froome Twitter controversy

[edit]

This has been included as it has been covered in mainstream news media today (The Independent, The Times and The Telegraph) and it is noteworthy given its close connection to the subject. Please do not revert the entry without resolving the issue on this talk page.

Thanks.

paulpat99 I noticed your reversion to my edit and have reverted back. Family members and their activities are regularly referenced in Wikipedia articles concerning living people (see for example the article on Rod Stewart. Please do not revert a disputed edit without making a genuine attempt to resolve the issue on the talk page as per Wiki rules.

Thanks. AlbusHaversham (talk) 22:13, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

At present, it is a story about Michelle Froome. When and If Chris Froome allies himself to, or distances himself from, the comments, it might be relevant to the article: until then it is not, and is tantamount to accusation by association. Kevin McE (talk) 23:02, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Which section on the Rod Stewart is about his family and not him?
I totally agree with what Kevin says, until Chris shows his support or comments on Michelle’s comments then it has no place here.
As you made the wp:bold change you need to establish a consensus before re-adding. Also use the @ symbol to mention other users. Paulpat99 (talk) 04:39, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
paulpat99 The subject doesn't need to comment on what his wife says for it to be relevant. It is objective fact and it has been sourced. If you read the Rod Stewart article you will notice it refers to the misdemeanour of his son Sean Stewart with no comment needed for the subject to comment on his son's conduct. I have deliberately pinged you so that it appears in your notifications. Why do you still need the @? AlbusHaversham (talk) 19:57, 19 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Because you are just linking to the user:Ping I have not been pinged at all. Click on my username you "pinged" and see where it directs to. Read this here WP:MENTION.
Well I do not think it is relevant to add the statement, in the case of Rod his son has an article so is notable enough for the inclusion. Paulpat99 (talk) 23:14, 19 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed this is not relevant for Chris' page until he directly comments and makes the story about him more directly. Tennisist123 (talk) 10:35, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
