Ulster County (NY) changed their charter last month (Nov) to add a county exec.

Rhea County TN

[edit]

I've moved the following content added anonymously in this edit here:

In Tenn. Rhea County has a County Executive not a County Mayor. So there is 4 county that don't use county executive. Thanks!

Merge proposal

[edit]

I have proposed to merge all of the scattered articles about the varying forms of county executive. This will result in a comprehensive article. Greg Bard (talk) 05:43, 28 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The following articles are being proposed for merging into county executive:
NB, A very similar discussion is taking place at Talk:County commission.olderwiser 12:55, 28 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
These four articles, all of which are on my watchlist, are tagged with an indication that there is a proposal to merge three of them to this page, but I don't find a discussion here, so I'm starting this one. --Orlady (talk) 03:18, 28 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose: In the absence of any discussion of the rationale for the proposal, I am opposed to it. The sole commissioner position, wherein a single elected commissioner functions as the legislative and executive branches of county government, is entirely different from the role of an elected county executive who works alongside an elected county legislature, and both of these are entirely different from the position of a hired professional county administrator or executive. As for County Judge/Executive, that is an article specific to county governance in Kentucky, and it would be a shame to boil it down to a sentence or two in order to squeeze it into a single article that attempts to generalize about county governance in all of the 3000+ counties in the United States. Ideally, there would be separate articles of good quality about the various distinct structures of county government in the country. Merging the handful separate articles that exist now into a single one-size-fits-all article is a step backwards, not a positive step for the improvement of the encyclopedia. --Orlady (talk) 03:18, 28 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
So in the absence of any discussion, you default to obstruction. Gee, how fair-minded. Just for the record Orlady has opposed and obstructed my efforts in the area of county government at every single opportunity without exception. Greg Bard (talk) 05:43, 28 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Excuse me, but who gave you permission to refactor my comments on this page?
I prefaced my comments with the statement about "absence of any discussion of the rationale for the proposal" because when I participate in these kinds of discussions, I normally will consider a proposer's rationale, and will attempt to address that rationale if I disagree with it. I felt it necessary to indicate that I could respond only to the simple proposal to merge. As it happens, my comments above say more about my reasons for opposing this proposal than you have said in your rationale for proposing it (below), but I'll be happy to respond to your comments. I would appreciate it if you would also refrain from personal attacks. --Orlady (talk) 17:53, 28 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment Folks, I would recommend that you read Wikipedia:Integrate for an accepted method of creating comprehensive articles in Wikipedia. This proposal is consistent with that guideline. One comprehensive article which is capable of eventually achieving GA status, is preferable to five scattered articles which never will. Greg Bard (talk) 15:55, 28 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Maybe.. "Judge" (also an older term in the West, not just current Kentucky) and "commissioner" refer to a similar elected official. A county administrator is appointed, in the West and South, by the county commissioners. I suppose the less often used "county executive" could apply to both. We don't have the three-pronged "checks and balances" at the municipal level that we do at the state and national level. The problem is that the county commissioners are also the legislature as councilpersons are in a municipality. Not sure why a vaguer term is required.
I am not enthused about defining articles so they may become GA or FA. I'd rather we do the best we can for the reader, and not construct articles which may have titles which are confusing. In this case, not often used. Student7 (talk) 00:20, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose I am opposed to merging the articles. The 50 states each have their own constitution and government. I do know that in my native state of Wisconsin the Wisconsin judges are not involved with county goverment administration but are judicial (please see Wisconsin State Constitution Article VII-Judiciary Article) and this has always been the case since Wisconsin was admitted to the union. We need to look from the reader's perspective and keep articles, categories, and templates simple as possible. Thank you-RFD (talk) 13:25, 4 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose - The problem with these articles is the plain vanilla leads don't make clear teh distinction of the different philosophies and responsibilities of each differing form of county government. If the leads instead outlined what is now a link, giving information, perhaps the nom wouldn't think they were so confusable with one another. Once in a while, it would be good to find editors here who wrote English rather than the language of 'Academically Confusing'. // FrankB 17:50, 6 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
