Animator, Mark Henn

Something interesting about the Disney Princesses: all of the modern Princesses, including Tiana, are animated by the same guy, Mark Henn (although he was not the only supervising animator on the first two). You will notice if you watch Jasmine and Mulan, especially, they have a very similar fluid way of moving. There's a stub on EW.com about him here: http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,312564,00.html

This information might be added to the "similarities" section, but it really is about their branding. These characters have always been considered similar, that's why they were repeatedly given to the same artist. I'm not sure if this fits into this article though?

There's also an interesting opinion piece in AWN in response to Peggy Orenstein's criticism that might belong in the links section? Link here: http://mag.awn.com/index.php?article_no=3510 Jancola (talk) 22:45, 8 February 2008 (UTC)

The Scottish Princess

After observing all these edit wars...I agree that we cannot keep putting down "Merida" as the name of the princess IF there is no citing. Until Pixar officially announces the movie we have no right to spout off wrong information. I ask these edits to cease otherwise if a moderator can place a block on this article Small5th (talk) 05:12, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

Agreed. People are merely making assumptions from the earlier (and current cite) and trying to tie it into the recent animation announcement that is not cited on this page. The problem is that the recent announcement did not offer any information that is usable as a citation on this page that supports the earlier comment. As we've seen with Giselle, plans have and can go awry.SpikeJones (talk) 12:00, 11 April 2008 (UTC)
I definitely don't think that "Merida" should be put on the 'announced' Disney Princess list. There's no citations and given that it's a Pixar movie, it's not even precedented to guess that she'll be a Disney Princess. Hollerama (talk) 14 June 2008 (UTC)

WAKE UP what the hell are you talking about its been comfirmed already it has its own article The Bear and the Bow it'll be produced by Pixar Animation Studios it will be distributed by Walt Disney Pictures, and is scheduled for release around Christmas 2011 Reese Witherspoon will play Princess Merida IT HAS EVERY RIGHT TO BE ADDED HERE.Veggiegirl (talk) 03:49, 13 November 2008 (UTC)

No, it does not. Just because Merida is a princess doesn't mean that she's part of the Disney Princess franchise; what the other editors here are pointing out that Disney has not released any official statements that she'll be included in that franchise. The article you listed as a reference just talks about the movie itself, and not the inclusion of the character as an "official" part of the Disney Princess franchise. Sorry for being repetitive about the word franchise, but I think it's important to keep things clear. And by the way, Veggiegirl, you might want to refer to WP:CIVILITY regarding how you address your fellow Wikipedia editors. :) --SilentAria talk 05:24, 13 November 2008 (UTC)
There was a live webcast (http://corporate.disney.go.com/investors/earnings.html), and during the webcast Bob Iger mentioned that Pixar's own Princess Merida from The Bear and the Bow will be incorporated into the franchise. :) 76.175.116.65 (talk) 23:07, 13 January 2010 (UTC)

Here is an article from PixarPlanet[[1]] that might help. And then here [[2]] is the article that it is refering to and might be what you are looking for SpikeJones. I know on Wikipedia we are not supposed to put our own opinion into the discussion, but in my opinion I don't see why we can't just wait for another year or so until Pixar has developed the movie more. Madagascar Princess

We seem to have some kid making constant vandalism adding the Madagascar princess...when Madagascar isn't even Disney. I suggest we put a ban on people making edits without usernames. Anyone know how to do that? Small5th (talk) 05:08, 21 June 2008 (UTC)

Comparisons

I originally contributed to the "Comparisons" section years ago, but now it's getting out of control and the entire section is uncited. Plus it's getting ridiculous that some of the points are people saying "except for...four of the princesses." I hate to say it, but since it is uncited and it's been tagged for half of year, then I suggest we axe the whole section and throw it out. Anybody else have any thoughts on it? Small5th (talk) 03:15, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

Trivia Section

I am aware a non registered user recently deleted the trivia section...and to be honest I do agree with that deletion. This trivia section sprang out of nowhere and has absolutely no citations whatsoever. That added to the fact Trivia sections are heavily discouraged in wikipedia I think the whole thing should be thrown out. I can foresee it getting as bad as the Comparisons section did. Small5th (talk) 04:37, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

I've deleted the trivia section. It's unencyclopedic, full of biased views, and has no sourcing whatsoever. Nemeses9 (talk) 06:17, 3 August 2008 (UTC)

For certain, in the film Mulan is not. Pocahantas was the daughter of the chief, so she's technically a princess. I'm pretty sure that Mulan's father was just a Lord, and that she's not in any way related to the emperor. --Mûĸĸâĸûĸâĸû 20:49, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

Mentioning Eilonwy and Kida

Rather than revert yet again, I'd like to discuss this. What, exactly, is the problem with mentioning a couple of princesses who are not included in the Disney Princess franchise, in the middle of a paragraph of discussion about how the franchise characters were not chosen specifically for their royal titles? Powers T 19:52, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

Thank you. I thought it was a good comparison as opposed to Megara or Jane who did not have "princess" in their title. User:SandSan T 5:02, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
The paragraph about the inclusion of "mythological" princesses and the exclusion of Tinkerbell is taken from the sourced NYT article, quoting a Disney spokesperson. These other two princesses are not mentioned in the sourced article, so including them seems arbitrary, WP:OR or WP:SYNTH. --Knulclunk (talk) 22:48, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
Let me put it this way. Since Mulan is the only really arguable princess in the franchise, and they insist on this statement then examples shold be included. Looking at female leads in Disney history, you will find several arguable cases (such as the already mentioned Jane and Megara) but almost all princesses with the title have been used. Therefore, the absent princesses should be noted for why they are not included in the franchise, with the fact being they do not meet the requirements of the target market. User:SandSan T 11:44, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
IF we are to include specific examples of characters that are excluded from the line, then such information MUST be cited as such. Otherwise, mere observation of "so-and-so is not in the line even though they are a princess" still falls under WP:OR. Otherwise, this article would contain a list of hundreds (exaggeration) of characters that also are not included in the merch line for various uncited reasons. Take, for example, the section dealing with Princess Giselle. She is a princess, but her non-inclusion is explicitly explained/documented/cited. SpikeJones (talk) 14:20, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

Well, in the end, all that matters are the characters that disney includes in the franchise, being they princess or not. For instance, Mulan is not a princess, but I guess she was added to be an asian representative in the group. On the other hand, Kida is, actually, a real princess, but she was not included in the franchise, maybe because Atlantis was not that much of a big hit. And Giselle, we all know, was removed because they would have to pay royalties to Amy Adams. All the others (Megara, Esmeralda, Jane, etc) are not princess and also not included, but I guess Disney would have included them if they have considered it worthy. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 201.82.134.159 (talk) 01:20, 22 October 2009 (UTC)

Tiana: Current or upcoming roster?

The official Disney Princess website now features Tiana. Does this mean we should add her to the official roster or should she still be in the "announced" section because she hasn't appeared in merchandising? Akcvtt (talk) 02:41, 4 September 2009 (UTC)

Technically, DCP has had an unveiling of the Tiana doll and some merch at an event 2 months ago. But we should wait until we see it covered/citable to be sure. SpikeJones (talk) 02:59, 4 September 2009 (UTC)

Original Songs ?

I don't just want to take the section out without a discussion, but I think the Original songs section of the article is unnecessary. It's overly long & makes the article look really messy. I think it might make more sense to compile a "Disney Princess Discography" which lists all of the Disney Princess CDs that have come out (similar to the Disney Princess DVD section). Rapunzel

Who Removed Rapunzel It has been confirmed that she will be a Disney Princess !

I don't think rapunzel is one of disney princesses,In disney princess website, there is no her picture Lmx940515 (talk — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lmx940515 (talkcontribs) 16:37, 10 February 2011 (UTC)

The above unsigned comment should be taken seriously. Although Rapunzel was originally announced to become part of the franchise (and the Disney Store's Disney Princess section includes Rapunzel items), other factors indicate she is *NOT* officially part of the franchise, at least not yet:

  • Only nine princesses (the original eight plus Tiana, but *NOT* Rapunzel) are shown on the official Disney Princess home page.
  • The "Movies" page on that site lists the nine princesses' films, but not Tangled.
  • Rapunzel items in stores have "Disney" in white on a pink oval (like the Disney Princess logo)--but *NOT* the word "Princess" below "Disney". (Edit: This in particular suggests a last-minute decision to exclude her from the franchise--though it could have been due to their now-abandoned "no more fairytales" stance, which suggests a possible future reversal. --RBBrittain (talk) 23:16, 10 February 2011 (UTC))

Finally, the mere fact that she is a princess in a Disney animation canon film, even the landmark 50th film, does *NOT* automatically make her a Disney Princess; Princess Kida from Atlantis: The Lost Empire has *NEVER* been part of the franchise. --RBBrittain (talk) 23:12, 10 February 2011 (UTC)

I agree with the above idea, but as we know, Rapunzel is a successful character. Then according to what disney did past years, Disney company will consider her as a disney princess officially soon. Let's wait for that day. Lmx940515 (talk

Proposed move

To help (hopefully) prevent future confusion over what this page is about, I propose moving this to Disney Princess marketing franchise. Thoughts? SpikeJones (talk) 22:32, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

I don't think so...for "Disney Princess" is the title of the franchise itself. Additionally, this page serves as a reference point for many young children...when they search for it they'll search "Disney Princess," rather than a long name such as "Disney Princess marketing franchise." Good suggestion though! Small5th (talk) 21:50, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
Search is not an issue, as we can redirect "Disney Princess" to the more specifically-titled page. SpikeJones (talk) 22:35, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

Princess Merida

I know this has been discussed to death all ready, but with Variety reporting that she is expected to join the franchise.[1] Should we add her or wait until after an official announcement from Disney? 66.19.119.85 (talk) 05:09, 28 December 2010 (UTC)

Enchanted

Taking into consideration on how wealthy the Disney empire is, I cannot see why they would decide to keep out Giselle from their list of Disney Princesses, just because they would have to pay royalties to Amy Adams for using her likeness. I mean, its not like they would not be able to afford to pay her or anything like that.--Splashen (talk) 03:56, 8 January 2011 (UTC)

Perhaps THIS is what the stray comment in the next section was really about. The fact is, the reference DOES indicate that Disney chose to exclude Giselle from the franchise because they would have had to pay royalties to Amy Adams. Whether or not any of us think Disney could afford to do so is irrelevant; none of us is Bob Iger, and that's the decision his company made. End of story. --RBBrittain (talk) 23:37, 10 February 2011 (UTC)
Possibly since Giselle never married the prince she wouldn't qualify as she was never made a princess. Although Mulan never married a prince and still made list. Also Princess Eilonwy from The Black Cauldron is also a princess in a Disney movie as well as Vanellope von Schweetz from Wreck-It-Ralph, but I haven't seen anything about adding them to the lineup. Neemund (talk) 00:13, 9 March 2013 (UTC)

Deletion of Theme Songs

I think we should omit the theme song column in the table at the top of the article. There is no citation for it, and the theme songs are rather subjective. You could say Belle's theme song was Belle (Reprise) or Pocahontas' was Just Around the Riverbend not Something There and Colors of the Wind, respectively. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.19.119.98 (talk) 21:39, 9 January 2011 (UTC)

Just a reminder that this page is not a forum to discuss Disney's financial decisions. It is a page to discuss the content within the article itself. Discovermine (talk) 00:23, 6 February 2011 (UTC)
Discovermine, just HOW is the previous item about "Disney's financial decisions" and not "discuss(ing) content within the article"? The point is well-taken; the theme-song list SHOULD have a reference (even if it's just a page on the official website) or else deleted. --RBBrittain (talk) 23:31, 10 February 2011 (UTC)

As noted on your other comment, neither is part of the marketing franchise (nor is Princess Kida from Atlantis: The Lost Empire), so they are properly excluded from this article. (Indeed, even the inclusion of Rapunzel in this article is questionable on that basis.) --RBBrittain (talk) 23:20, 10 February 2011 (UTC)
Kida is likely excluded for reasons other than marketability; first, the film is not a musical; all the "official nine" come from musicals. Second, Kida is a nearly-immortal warrior with "blood in her hands", so to speak; it is very strongly implied that she has killed many trespassers in cold blood, something that Disney is not keen on encouraging in young girls. Eilonwy's exclusion is, IMHO, a travesty; she is a primary character in a "canon master" Distey Film and she is indisputably a princess. Tiger Lily is a minor character, so it is easy to see why she is excluded. Another one who is excluded is Megara from Hercules (1997 film), who eventually marries Hercules (who, as the son of the King of the Gods is a prince; actually recognized as such at the end of the film); her exclusion might be due to the fact that it is implied that she is a woman of loose morals, someone who makes bargains with dark gods in exchange for her soul and ends up as the servitor of Hades. Regardless, Disney has the final say in who gets included in the franchise; until us mere mortals can put together a few billion $$'s to buy Disney out, best we can do is write-in-campaigns. Anela

In this next hand drawn animated Disney movie, Anela: A Prehistoric Tale, there's another Disney princess, not just ordinary princess, a princess who is brave and strong, her name is Anela. Anela is the princess of the cave clan in the deep, lush rainforests. She has similarities of Ariel (red hair color), Tarzan (dreadlocks hair style, eyes shape, muscles and muscular skin color), Pocahontas (lips), Kida (female body and feet), Nala (adult female talking voice), and Rapunzel (green iris eye color). Her story goes like this for the film: In 1,000,000 B.C, a young woman named Anela, the princess of the cave clan and a daughter of her beloved father, the chief, and comedic mother, the chieftess. Her father marched the path for Anela to the Crystal Mountain. Anela started her mission through the deep rainforest and met a handsome, young man named Kula (who stopped his older brother (Tarzan appeared in this movie, but his name can't be shown or heard) from killing Anela by saving her life after an accidental fight.) joined her to the Crystal Mountian. The great magic blue Crystal Ball of the Crystal Mountain was hidden by a wicked sorceress named Oleiya who stole this magnificent gift to rule the land. Anela and Kula met the Great Creature (a female Apatosaurus) who led the way to the Crystal Mountain to stop Oleiya and bring back the Crystal Ball back.

Before King of the Elves, this upcoming film will be huge sucsess for the Disney Company, and Anela will be either the eleventh or Twelfth Offical Disney princess soon. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.209.52.220 (talk) 21:18, 4 October 2011 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.195.131.166 (talk)

Mulan

Why do people remove Mulan from the official list?? Georgia guy (talk) 14:12, 30 December 2011 (UTC)

Could be any number of reasons really possibly related to her not having a a crown/princess-like-gowns or being titled princess? Is there any official confirmation that Merida will be the eleventh Disney princess?? Georgia guy (talk) 13:06, 29 March 2012 (UTC)

Not subservient to a man, therefore can not be an official Dizzy Princess, sorry.

http://www.disgeek.com/is-brave-merida-the-next-disney-princess%E2%84%A2 She needs to get herself a man. Unmarried princesses don’t make the cut.

Therefore there shall never be a Lesbian Disney Princess. (Thank Cthulhu!) Hcobb (talk) 07:44, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
It's a Pixar production, not an official Disney Animated film and therefore not an official Disney Princess. Freshh (talk) 19:01, 22 June 2012 (UTC)

Merida

There is a new princess, Merida, from the movie Brave. It has been confirmed that she is a Disney princess, so someone needs to add her. -Mallen22 (talk) 20:12, 3 July 2012 (UTC)

No official statement from Disney proves that she is an official Disney Princess, so for now, we leave her off.Caringtype1 (talk) 20:25, 12 August 2012 (UTC)

Merida seems to officially be a disney princess as she already has a marketing line of dolls and such. Also, in the commercials it does call her Princess Merida.

We should probably incorporate some of the information from Merida (Disney)#Controversy, as it specifically regards the Disney Princess incarnation. Kaldari (talk) 08:45, 12 October 2013 (UTC)
