We need to expand this

It says she was a feminist, but apart from the fact that she was a member of a suffragette organisation there is nothing to show what work she did in the field of feminism. I am also wary of applying a 20th Century term to a 19th Century activist. DavidFarmbrough (talk) 19:47, 28 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm quite happy with labelling her a feminist, since she was undoubtedly someone who believed in women's rights (see, for example, her famous essay on 'Wife Torture' in the Contemporary Review), although I take your point. However, the category of 'suffragette' is incorrect. Cobbe was a suffragist (or 'womens' suffrage campaigner'), who died around the time that the WSPU was formed; the first group to use the term, and she was not, as far as I know, a member. We have no way of knowing if Cobbe would have supported its actions, and again as far as I know, she never engaged in militant activity. I've now altered the page to reflect the change.
